I'm looking at the scans and I don't think anyone doubted they were in-game. They look great but nothing that would cause an uproar of disagreements like e.g. that KillZone 2 trailer did. Those visuals in the scans are more than doable on the platform.

The scans that I saw were scanned extremely poorly so I don't know how you can make such a harsh judgment(Or have better quality scans been released?). Regardless, based on the graphics of the original I would say it will be one of the best looking games across all platforms and it deserves more respect.

Those scans are realistically what everyone expected gears of war 2 to look like. Looks like Gears 1 and maybe marginally better. Marginal in the sense you need side by side comparisons to tell

i never believed it would be super-duper-way-ass-kicking better than Gears 1 graphically. And it won't be. It will be a little bit better but Gears 1 was impressive as it is. What Epic should concentrate on is the gameplay and frame-rate above all else. Having that many enemies at the same time is hard to handle and i'd like to see them do it without frame-rate problems.

Based on those scans, Gears 2 will not be setting the graphical bar again... sorry to dash any feelings. But both KZ2 & Resistance 2 have already shown far more graphical detail from their games. The recently released R2 trailer is simply amazing. Resistance 2 will likely be the best looking game across all consoles this year.

The scans are horrible quality. Printed and reproduced, they look like shiat.

Now, the fake-pre-rendered bull-video that Sony tried to pull over on people, yeah, that caused disagreement that caused Sony to have to admit they were pulling bull-video.

The unreal engine is not all that and a bag of chips, Gears of war is the best looking game on Xbox 360 but not the PC or PS3. UTIII didn't look that good to me on PS3 or PC. So why do think Gears of war 2 with a slightly better unreal engine upgrade over UTIII is going to amaze?

But they looked far better than the old one when I matched the HD version Gears2 has an improvement over Gears1 what COD4 had over COD2. One more aspect is the levels are and draw distance is far huge and one stage was said to have A Brumak following you in Jungle with tress falling apart. But yeah more has to be revlealed but still the screens look way better than Gears was or UT3.
KZ2 looks so good because of postprocessing and UE3 is now equipped with it now.

I was talking about the E307 trailer for KillZone 2, not the one a few years back. I remember last year, some of you were still spouting that it was CGI. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if many still believed it was CGI.

And the falling trees, it just amazes me on Crysis where it's really well done. One level where you can cut then down was on Uncharted and as much as the game amazes me, the tree thing was almost passed by unnoticed.

Even with UT3, the pre-release screens were vastly better looking than the actual game. Gears 2 will look good. And MAYBE it will be the best looking game on the 360 when it comes out. But it definitely won't be the best looking game on all consoles.

is Sony's secret weapon this gen, they are pushing wayyyyyy more pixels out than the 360 is. For example if developed on the PS3 Gears would've looked like the first shot, while the 360 is only capable of what you see in the second. ATI was actually a very bad choice for MS this time around. They have been owned by NVIDIA for the better part of the last decade and that shows no signs of changing anytime soon.

And I was amazed at the perfect 10s it got in the graphics department. I've seen Epic do the same thing with Unreal Tournament 3. Looks decent enough in-game, but nothing close to what they published in Magazine screenshots.

I'm really just waiting for in-game video footage, because that'll be the true determinant of how it compares to the likes of Killzone and Resistance (once we get updated footage for those titles at E3).

We all now you should not see it from the distance you have from your computer now (and that is why it looks way so worse) but I do agree... Gears don't looked that great to me... For sure, it was a push back in 2006 but really, Resistance has already better models and less crispy images (just look at the weapon, try to forget that Marcus's odd/dirty ear and hair in front of you).

I'm not calling out Gears Of War or Gears of War II, but really, in my mind the outstanding in gears was the level design (offline), a smart use of the colors, pretty fresh (not really original) gameplay and they was amaze enough to put in a game style and narrative that attracts the Halo guys to it, which put a big amount of people playing it online (and we all know that the online success of some games depends on the number of people playing it, COD4 could be as good as 1 billion dollars in my wallet, but if no one played it, we would just let it go and moved away to the next fragfest).

But back to the point Gears stop amazing me back in early 07, from that 'till now we have many really graphical pushes, why should someone expect Gears 2, in the same old engine with little adjustments, to amaze us? I don't think it gonna be the best looking game even on 360 only, because Bioshock is already a little better that Gears 1, if developers now try and make their own way (read it: no more unreal engine shortcuts) to tap 360 hardware, they can easy pass Gears 2.

Mass Effect looked great but the frame rate issue where only when too much action was there and UE3 engine upgrade was not there and even then it was having huge open world environments. Also just think Mass Effect looked better than Gears and even UT3 and especially the characters where best in any game.

That is a foolish thing to say. Gears is only the biggest game this gen for 360 fanboys. Sony fanboys couldn't care less aout Gears. And reasonable gamers will agree, that while it was good, Gears is nowhere near the biggest game this gen. Especially this year when GTA4 and MGS4 finally release. Lastly, Gears simply took the mechanic from Killswitch and prettied it up, but more importantly, it came far too early in the generation for it to have a lasting impact overall for it to be the top game/series of this generation. Nobody knows what we will have next year or later. It's still too early to tell.

Gears of War won *piles* of Game of the Year Awards. "Reasonable" gamers know that Gears is one of the best games of the last two years, bar none.

I think COD4 is the new winner. And honestly, it has much cleaner visuals than Gears, running at 60fps in 1080p with 18 players online. In a year people will still be playing COD4 A LOT, and across all platforms.

COD4 was only able to achieve those visuals at 600p native resolution. Gears was actually at least true 720p with very detailed environments and character models. The only thing it could have used a bit more anti-aliasing, but it doesn't matter too much when playing at normal viewing distance. Gears 1 set the benchmark for graphics though. But it wasn't just the graphics that made Gears a huge seller, it was the fact that the 360 didn't have such a great library of games at the time, and the actual gameplay of gears was pretty innovative.

When games like Uncharted came out, and games like Killzone 2 were revealed, it was sorry @sses like yourselves that were trying to compare them to Gears. I already own a windows based PC and its WAY better than that POS plus it cant red ring. If i got the video card thats in the 360 i would be downgrading a generation, and i only have a 7 series card(7950gx2). I dont want a x1600 in my system, its crap. Midrange when it launched, laughable now. as for the 360 having "more ram" as the fans like to say. it doesnt. And my 4GB kills it too. This article doesn't even specify if those screenshots are CG movies or actual gameplay.
But the Gameplay in Gears suffers tremendously from the graphics. Online is a lagfest. You have to shoot people ahead of time. I love getting killed then seeing the player fire his weapon. Alot of the textures don't load for awhile. Not to mention the host advantage it pretty cheap.

This game also gets irritating because all anyone wants to do is snipe. I hope they bring in some more weapons to counter balance that. There is nothing more annoying in FPS's when half your team is trying to snipe like a bunch of homos.

That being said at least they're upping the ante to 5 on 5 multiplayer. Lets just hope the xbox can handle this one a little better.

At any rate, Resistance 2 looks leap years ahead of Gears and definitely looks better than what's been shown of Gears 2 so far.

The disco ball, transmorpher, blobs, electro-whip, etc... R&C had a FAR more creative arsenal of weapons than Gears. As far as single player games go, it was a better game all around: gfx, gameplay, & story.

The Uncharted devs had to turn off some of the Unreal engines's Visual and lighting effects features to get it to run on PS3.

Them Alan Wake screenshots were from the PC version in 2005, plus, it was coming to ps3 too before it was canned.

I have Gears for PC and a very high end rig ( I can run Crysis at 1920x1200 with very little frame lag) only on my PC have I seen Gears even come close to the marketing bullshots from 05. Of course that takes 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a quadcore and a 8800GTX768(the fastest card on the planet still 2 years after its release. It's kind of ironic that the definitive version is the one that had the least sales.

The fact some ass said this is ingame doesn't mean it actually is, plus we don't know what the final build we'll look like cuz on the early stages of development the game is running of some sh!t dev kit which for some reason are much more powerful than the console so the last build has to be made quite a bit different to work on X360 now if this was on PC...

PS3 is capable of so much more graphically. A lot of this is due to the fact that, although the Xbox360's 3 core processor is decent enough, it is nowhere near as powerful as the PS3's 7 core processor(the eighth slot is open). When you consider that + mandatory HDD + More storage capacity on Blu Ray = much more possiblities gameplay wise.

Take the new GTA4 for ex. All the early reviews point to the PS3 version as superior. The PS3 version has splitscreen multiplayer - not in the 360 version!!! The PS3 takes 8min to install the game and because of this runs a lot smoother.

This is the reason the game was delayed in the first place, because Rockstar couldn't make it fit on 1 dvd for the 360 version. The install version is available on the 360, but if you don't use it the quality suffers. Originally they were planning to release the game with a "HDD Required" sticker on the case.

Not to mention the 360 version has "shiny" graphics for this game, in the PS3 version you can turn down the color saturation and tweak the graphics to make them better.

Because the PS3 is more powerful it has been reported by several people who have played the games that the PS3 version has more cpc's. More proof of the PS3's power.

Just wondering. I can't see this game running at that smooth of a frame rate considering the first struggled to run at 30fps and online with smoke grenades it dropped significantly (almost to a slide show. Remember Annex when it first released hiw bad the frame rate was with a lot of corpses lying around?)

I think the graphics are fine the way they are already. I would rather more solid frame rates, more mods supporting a higher numbers of players per side, some new weapons, characters and a slight boost in graphics over the original would've done the trick for me.

I just hope G2 doesn't turn out to be another Halo 3.

at the scans i thought they were artwork with the way Game informer published them. These graphics are very doable in my opinion so i am not surprise that they are ingame. The difference from the first gears is that there is more detail texture from these scans. I am sure it has alot to do with their new lighting tech which i read makes subtle difference in textures more profound. Either way i am pretty sure its going to look better than the first but how much better we should wait for gameplay footage to findout.

Videos I've seen of KZ2 look terrible. When you fire your gun, dark rooms light up as if a flare gun went off. That's not realistic. Also, some of the models look pretty plastic. Sure, Gears wasn't true-to-life, however, I think it had pretty damn good graphics.

MGS4 looks pretty good. I haven't done much research on that game, but I'm buying it no doubt. I think the graphics in Gears of War 2 and MGS4 will be comparable, however it's too early to tell.

Regardless, Gears of War 2 will set a higher standard for games, just as the original.

The room lighting up is due to the effects of something we call muzzle flash. And yes, it is realistic.

Someone has obviously has never seen footage of assault rifles being fired in the dark. The lighting formula being used is Inverse Distance Squared, which is the standard property of light in the real world and how it falls off in intensity. Every other game I've seen simply uses Inverse Distance or Linear fall-off, which is a remnant from the PS2 era.

I own all the consoles so i get to play the best of all 3 and yes i am going to get GEOW2 i like the first one for its co-op story mode hated the online 4vs4 play though and i have to say idk why people say the ps3 has no games or no good games that only shows that you dont own a ps3 and are probably a fanboy. Just because gears of war 1 seemed better than resistance 1, does'nt mean the same will happen with the sequels. The same goes for killzone 2, though personally I'm not hyped up for that game.

Looking at Killzone 2 visuals, its obvious it has the best and most realistic lighting effects ever seen. But when you look at the graphics as in number of polygons a character has or how detailed the textures look like, Killzone 2 is just average.

Killzone 2 looks really pretty thanks to its dynamic lighting effects.

That's basically it.

Whereas Gears of War (at its time) has character models that had higher than average number of polygons in each model. And the lighting and everything else were superb (at its time).

We don't really know how GOW2 will be like so lets just wait and see.

On its weapons, but everything else definitely needs a big upgrade in that arena. All we have to judge is pre-alpha game footage, but whatever. I hope they really push it. And yeah, the lighting system for that game is amazing. As most CG artists will tell you, lighting is everything.

Gears actually doesn't have high polygon counts for its characters. Here's a mesh render of one of the in-game enemies, with the polygon count (5,287):

Gears basically just had great use of Normal Mapping. I saw some of the levels with just texture and polygon data, and I was shocked at how much repetition there was in the texture work, as well as how low-detail it was. But mixing up the normal maps in clever ways made the game look really interesting and very detailed.

But if you want polygon comparisons, the characters in Call of Duty 4 are around 5,000 polygons, and the characters in Uncharted are between 12 and 20,000.

It'd be comparing apples to oranges if you go by poly counts between games b/c where one game uses straight up polys for geometry, Gears uses a rather ingenious idea of wrapping a frame with a texture, or normal mapping. The whole point is to USE LESS POLYS so they can be used for somthing else, and it is one of the best techs i've seen so far as far as LOD on characters...

So lets not compare poly for poly unless we consider what it all means...Gears ends up having less polys sure, but gets more detail out of it...
