What are everyones thoughts about the Nintendo NX, PS4 Neo, and Xbox 1.5? Do you guys think that mid generational upgrades are the future of the industry?

The NX isn't a midgen upgrade. The Wii U is only going to be a few months short of a proper life cycle when it releases. The others are on shaky ground. The PS4k and XB 1.5 are going to make game development more complicated and this gen is already having a hard time with bare release schedules. In contrast, NX is pretty well positioned to eat everyone's lunch if it is as dev friendly as the rumors suggest.

kneon2948d ago

Development for PS4K and Xb1.5 will be fairly straightforward. It's just a vastly simpler version of PC development in that there are two well known targets rather than thousands of possible combinations as on PC.

The NX on the other hand is likely to suffer the same fate as the Wii U. Most people just don't care about Nintendo anymore, and there is little they can do about that. It will take a lot to win the non-Nintendo crowd over, and it will take time as people will be wary about the NX becoming another Wii U.

Mid generational upgrades are silly. Should I skip the launch of gen 9 and wait for the gen 9.5 consoles???

Microsoft brings a vicious competitive tactic to the market. I am truly surprised they have not already released a new model. They do it with all of their other products. If Sony wants to stay significant, the PlayStation brand is its light. We all know Microsoft has a large amount of media in their pocket and they used it all last gen like a shiv against Sony. Play the best version only on Xbox advertisements, third party deals for exclusives or content, boasting sales numbers every month for the US etc etc...
Sony should be ready with a mid gen console because I think all of this hoopla is actually a game from Microsoft but, obviously third party games runs the market and comparing this gen to last gen, the best version of those games move more consoles.
Now, the ps4 is already more powerful and a "4K" console with a little more umph for the games would be easy to do but, however, the Xbox one is already showing its kink in the armor and Microsoft is not so great at supporting the lowest product on the totem poll. Look at all the ports to the pc... The games have issues because they are made for the Xbox one. Does Microsoft build for the Xbox one .5 and downgrade to the Xbox one or, does the .5 also get the port with a little better performance? Either way, one console negates the other.
Anyways, I am fine and I am pretty sure both Sony and Microsoft know their consumers enough to judge how much movement they would have.
Also, after last gen, it is very risky to try and be inventive with hardware for the sake of being inventive in the computer world. Sonys cell just did not do any favors for a mass market situation so, the only reason for newer console is to beef them up.
The other perk from creating a rotation is keeping all your games. No more worries about reverse compatible. Your library stays relevant continuously.

I still don't see how it's considered a mid gen upgrade if they launch 4 years from original launch.

RevXM2947d ago

Waste of time and resources.
I'd rather have a proper next gen system in a couple of years from now than a slighty more powerful version of the current boxes that were outdated long ago.

If the mid gen boxes means Im going to have to wait beyond 2018-2019 for PS5 or the next proper box Ill be most displeased...

Really logically we should have Ps5 in 2018, given that the cycle most generations have been 5 years from start of one to the next gen, and this gen is underpowered and 40% performance increase is nowhere close enough to where it needs to be.
At best the mid gen consoles are just premium current gen systems and not a means to keep this gen artificially alive. Also having two hardwares that developers must develop and optimize for is probably annoying for a lot of them. and dont get me started on all the graphics comparisons and bull that is going to spawn from having 2 Ps4's and one version that isnt properly optimized and so on. Keep it Simple for damns sake, so much for being developer friendly then.

I think its a necessity of the times. Otherwise soon your iphone and tablet will have better graphics than your dedicated gaming console.

If it helps consoles survive im for it.

If they want to change what consoles have always stood for then they have to go all the way. By that i mean things like my PS4 controller and headset should work just fine with PS5, backwards compatibily should be free etc.

Days Gone Director Says Bend's Project Costs Over $250M; Says PS Co-CEO Doesn't Want 2 Zombies Games

Days Gone director claims Sony has already poured in at least a $250M in Bend's project; says Days Gone sold more than Death Stranding.

shinoff218318h ago

Well that sucks. Seems they want more online trash. I'd rather of had the sequel if it was single player

MrNinosan3h ago

What online trash games did PS Studios release last 10 years?

Notellin1h ago

The past has nothing to do with the future. This is such a terrible argument. Everyone knows about their current live service push.

_SilverHawk_29m ago

It's so tragic what happened to days gone. It is such an amazing game but bandwagoners trashed it and it underperformed in it's launch year. Days gone is the best open world zombie game released in the past five years. I was recently playing it on pc and I'm still amazed by it.

Games are very expensive to make and it seems like it's normal for a AAA game to cost over a quarter billion to make so if a quality game like days gone greatly underperforms then people shouldn't be upset when they see a lot of GAAS. I still remember a lot of bandwagoners calling days gone trash but years later it's now amazing when it's considered a failure by sony.

If a game isn't the best thing seen since hats with pockets then a lot of gamers who haven't played it automatically calls it rubbish and whoever made it should be incarcerated

It would be a shame if it was true that Hermen never gave the franchise a chance simply because he didn't like it and they already had a "Zombie" game with TLOU.

NaughtyDog are most likely moving onto a new IP next so it would have been the perfect time to do it.

ThinkThink10h ago

Here's where xbox steps in and releases state of decay 3 day and date on ps5.

Grilla3h ago

Days gone 2 was canceled before Herman was in charge. That happened like 4 years ago.

vfl5232h ago

4 years ago he was head of Playstation Studios. He would've probably had a hand in the cancelation.

Man two seconds of research could have saved you from this comment. Amazing work Grilla you fit in with the uniformed N4G community who speaks before verifying anything that they say.

Redemption-6423m ago

Maybe encourage people to buy the game at full price and not when it's heavily discounted or go on plus. If this game had sold well when it was full priced a sequel would have been in the works. They made a single-player game that most people didn't support until they dropped the price.

excaliburps4h ago

Yep. Kind of weird since it wasn't a sales flop, no?

I know we have to take what Ross says with a grain of salt since we're hearing just one side of the story, but even so, the game wasn't bad at all. Heck, it's my brother's favorite last-gen game from what I recall.

The amount of zombies on screen, imagine that with the PS5 and SSD? That would be insanely fun!

Grilla3h ago

Most copies were sold on sale. Not enough ppl bought it at full price. I paid 20$ for it 6 -7 months after release.

Notellin1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Yeah we should never believe the creators side until we hear the corporate/big business side as history has shown we should always believe billion dollar corporations.

What a bootlicker statement.

P_Bomb3h ago

Well I don’t want 10 live service games, but they have no problem doing that lol. Ugh.

CrimsonWing693h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Oh great so we only get what the big wigs want… y’know, the people that really have their fingers on the pulse of what their consumers want. Faaaaantastic!

rippermcrip23m ago

Well consider they know the sales... they do know what the consumer wants.

It sold shit.
