Sony is Not Revealing the new PlayStation At E3 2016

Sony is planning to launch a new 4K/VR capable console. The name of the console isn’t known yet, but it could be PS4 Neo, PS4.5, PS4K, etc. According to a game industry insider, the new console from Sony will be revealed at the Paris Games Week trade show, not at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2016.

I assume your referring to the Uncharted posters that listed Horizon as a 2016 game? Because those were almost-certainly produced before Shinobi's announcement - which was just a couple of weeks before the promos released - and it's not as though Sony's going to announce Horizon's delay on an Uncharted ad... Shinobi's track-record speaks for itself, so I'd hold-out 'til E3 before denouncing him.

His track record is about 50/50 and half of what he does right is just logical guesses. He's wrong on plenty of things, and I find it hard to believe he would have more information on Neo than the devs do right now...up to and including release plans. As a dev, I'd be happy just to have some form of specs made available, but hey, why would devs need that before the system releases.....right?

Oh, it exists - there's WAY too much evidence to suggest otherwise... Personally, I'd prefer they announce it soon, if-only so the hard-core gamers know when to start saving (or get a second job!).

I get the feeling Sony aren't delighted by these leaks, but they should at-least say something - I doubt I'm the only person who was waiting for Uncharted, only to now be waiting for the Neo... That said, October makes sense - PSVR is set to release then, and Christmas is the season for bundles, so I can see why they're waiting.

There's litterally not one single piece of evidence that has been given to the public for perusal. Hell, I don't even know any devs which have seen evidence of its existence. Every piece of evidence is all based on hearsay and assertion of fact and none of it has been seen by anyone on here. Not one single person on here can link to the actual physical proof of it's existence, but can readily link to the hearsay and assertion articles. There are even only a few sites which assert these things, with everyone else just rebroadcasting it, and the whole thing has morphed into some sort of absolute. On top of that, there has really only been a few pieces of evidence actually asserted. It just seems like more because it keeps getting talked about over and over again. And lastly, the few pieces of evidence we do have has changed several times since this all began.

So assuming all this evidence is fact, why not just say the evidence that it's just a UHD capable PS4 is also fact? I mean, it was one of the pieces of evidence which itself asserted that's all the Neo amounted to.

It's actually rather amusing just how readily people are accepting everything as fact, despite not having seen a single piece of evidence beyond what a few journalist claim to be true.

I have to agree. What you are saying makes a lot of sense. I only wonder why Sony hasn't said anything to quash these rumors if they aren't true.

I guess if they are going to release some kind of upgraded PS4, even if that only amounts to a UHD Blu-ray upgrade, maybe they simply don't want to tip their hand at all.

Also when Sony as these media sites are reporting that states its not going to have any exclusives or will not be separate in its networks functionality but offer 4K. The fact is if it was true to form upgrade to take advantage of 4K resolution.

Why would Sony not release this upgraded Ps4 in Home theater in instead. He did say he was told and not 100% certain. Other rumours said neo would be shown at TGS. I think it's possible Sony announces it at E3 and fully reveal it later on. It doesn't seem to be in the same category as a new gen and I guess they may not want to overdo it as to overshadow the base PS4

Dev.net has some chatter about it, but it's mostly members just asking if it's something they should or need to know about. No one there seems to know what it is, and I've seen some devs in there from pretty big studios who would be privy to that kind of information early. There was a really long thread about it in the forums, and eventually it died because everyone came to the conclusion it couldn't possibly be a thing for release this October, because they would have to know about it by now...if not last year. That was a couple weeks ago. Since then, the topic has been pretty quiet because developers know how to move on from hearsay.

But some of us few random forum goers who probably know more about what's going on in the background due to our work are dismissed, because we won't verify ourselves, but unnammed sources from what most people consider dodgy media sites, and random "insiders" with perceived spotless track records are taken as gospel.

My only conclusion is that the media sites got played, or they misunderstood some information and still got played, or they are actively making up bullsh*t for hits. If it's the latter, I really wonder what kind of fallout it might have. Granted, if they got played, they should still be held accountable for their ineptitude.

Maybe Sony was planning to reveal it at E3 but have been updated about the negative press and reaction that it has been getting from the media and some fans.

E3 is the biggest gaming show in the industry and it can make or break your product...the XB1 reveal at E3 is a good example and has taken MS a lot to gain back the trust of gamers .

Revealing the Neo at another show will be more low key and won't get as much press if it turns out that people don't like the idea.

Joe E3 is covered by big media companies like BBC, CNN and Fox.

Sure the gaming media is 24 7 but do casuals know what Ignition or Giant Bomb is.

My point was that once companies like CNN or BBC start to report that the 4K Neo is not being received well by gamers then this could have a butterfly effect on the vanilla Ps4 sales since casuals don't go into the tech details but more into what someone is pushing them to buy.

Well I don't know how well covered it is by CNN and FOX (very rarely watch or follow news stories from them in the UK), but it is not well covered by the BBC or Sky News or other broadcasting media platforms in the UK, maybe brief messages or one off reports near the end of each half hour segment of news reports but definitely not on the scale of E3 announcements becoming breaking news or part of major news reports. BBC News does have a half hour tech programme called 'Click' and Sky News has 'Swipe' but they don't really have video games as the main focus. Even dedicated tech programs like 'The Gadget Show' rarely show video game news even at programs scheduled on E3 week.

However due to certain agendas anything gaming that would be 'relevant' on the mainstream news channels in the UK would be something related to like 'gamer-gate', 'gamer feminist attention whore spreading bullcrap about being trolled online' and 'games blamed for child violence' etc. Which is why anyone having a proper interest in the subject of gaming and games in general would not turn to those sources for their news fix and instead turn to gaming websites such as N4G.

The UK being a big market for the big three, it's mostly on advertising (and word of mouth/visiting gaming sites like N4G) that brings awareness to consumers here and generates interest and sales for games and consoles.

E3 is a big show but most times when both Microsoft or Sony announced a price cut or slim version, most of those came active within the week of their announcement because the rumor is for October release it's actually very likely it won't be revealed at E3.

It doesn't really sound like Sony to announce a new version or sku of something months before its release.

If we believe the October rumor we should also believe that the company has been known to do with such announcements.

I'm not sure how a backlash can even translate into lost sales to be honest so I don't think for a second that the company chose not to because of consumers.

Unfortunately that doesn't make much sense. It's like the X1's DRM issue. It's the elephant in the room, and regardless of if it's true or not, they would be better off addressing it, and it makes more sense to do it when the press is actually there to listen. They can either squash everything with one sentence, or confirm it. If it's not real, it makes more sense to squash it when you have everyone's attention. If it is real, it makes more sense to announce it at the biggest trade show.

New hardware at Paris Game Week doesn't make sense. So lets look at the various rumors.

It's a UHD capable PS4. E3 would allow Sony to push out a new UHD player on the market when there isn't as much competition. This hardware push is typical with their PS line, and it makes more sense to do it now when there are only a few players on the market, and stand alones are expensive.

It's a double the power PS4/4K capable unit. Why wait? If they're ready to release it, there's no reason to wait until October, as announcing it at E3 or PGW would stall sales of their current unit as people wait it out. This means if they're ready to announce it, it's probably close to ready to ship. However, no retail evidence exists that it is coming. After PGW, there just isn't any other big international shows which will get the kind of attention it needs, and that's not how Sony releases consoles.

But consider this. Sony shouldn't be second guessing itself on this. If they're going to do it, they have to be committed to it, and sell the messaging of why it exists, and how it will benefit the consumer. It makes more sense to do that when the mainstream media is paying attention, because it's the mainstream which makes up the bulk of console sales. Sony will have to want to get the mainstream excited. They can get the gamers excited at any time, because as joe says, news is 24 hours. But a low key event means Sony has to work more later to market the idea, and ultimately, it can cause the product to fail, because the message may not get out there as much. Again, look at MS DRM policies. Mainstream picked up on it, GameStop talked about it, it was everywhere. MS didn't say a word at E3 about it, and when they finally reversed the policies in a low key way, the mainstream knew nothing about it. That's not a good way to market a product. Sony's messaging isn't going to be in the line of "testing the waters", it's going to be with confidence that what they have to offer is beneficial to the consumer, and they are going to want to express those benefits in the most efficient way possible. Forum people will still fight it out, but the mainstream will only see the PR stuff that the mainstream will give it, and most of the negatives will not be addressed.

Regardless of what happens, people know about it. The reaction is already mixed. They have to address it, or it's just going to keep building. I'm surprised they haven't addressed it already because as of now it's contained to the forums, but at E3, lack of saying something will only draw more attention to it as more people outside the regular forum goers are getting gaming news.

In any case, low key isn't really how Sony announces new hardware. PSTV is the only instance where they went somewhat low key, and that pretty much flopped.

I could actually see a dedicated conference to announce an actual hardware upgrade. It allows them to focus their efforts, not be drowned out by other news, and to invite the entire press to attend to insure that the information gets out there with proper press releases.

With PSVR coming out this year, having TWO $400 hardware released around the same time may not be the brightest idea.

If next year it makes more sense to just ride it out another year and have a typical console cycle instead of trying to create a new paradigm.

I could see a polaris upgrade, because polaris is a fabrication process, not an actual GPU core structure. Any GPU could be made using Polaris, including the one's in the current consoles, and it makes sense to given the efficiency and reduced costs inherent in using the process. This could mean a slim version is coming, which makes more sense than a full on upgrade to the core hardware.

Well maybe he does however as he also says he expects it in like october time, I expect he means gamescome as that's end of august gives a months warning to people saving up reducing number of "I bought this yesterday ffs" complaints and for shops to deal with preorders. The only world where announcing it literallly as it's released is the one where the current model is being discontinued and replaced by the new one and you aim to sell as many of the remaining model's unit's as possible.

That's the only reason you would care so much about 'lost' sales from people waiting. Because they aren't really lost sales they are the same sales just delayed by a month or so but probably fir slightly more money than they were before in ps4's case. Also it's beneficial to have people wait because otherwise a) you have the angry people who just bought one and would've waited a month or so. B) having more people own the neo version is beneficial because it encourages devs to put mire effort into the neo settings and bother todo more beyond just better frame rate. C) it'd have to be in full scale production months in advance so whilst you might not want to have announced it everyone would know from leaks so tou night aswell make sure you've announced it before images of packaging and fully boxed models start leaking -Sony have a bad track record with this.

Depending on release date this makes sense. It's better to reveal it to the masses as close to launch as possible. Even though we all know it's coming, the masses don't, and an early public announcement might slow regular PS4 sales the same way announcing an early price cut would.

I really think Sony is trying to avoid the Neo reveal at E3 because of the bad press it has been getting lately and could affect the original PS4 sales if it turns out to be hated by the media and public.

Leaks would be huge if they wait that long. Retail will have to know about it within the next month or two to start determining how many to order, and get their customers engaged to actually sell the product. The second this info gets to retail channels, the second it gets leaked as confirmed to the masses. Waiting a bit is fine for a full console generation upgrade due to everyone knowing it's coming, and likely will have a big market waiting to purchase, but this is something new, where no one knows what to expect, and having that sort of apprehension in the consumer is not something retail will be game for.

It might make sense to prevent stalling sales of the current console, but it doesn't make sense if they actually want to distribute the thing efficiently without tons of misinformation floating around where people are forming opinions based on inaccurate data....kind of how it's going now for instance.

Here is a Hint, Sony and Nintendo really want console gaming to continue. One out of the three would like nothing more than to see Nintendo or Sony or both stop making game console's.

Ironic thing is , for many that think the PC under the TV will be the Default computer entertainment box for the TV..well you have a real rude awakening in your future.

I heard it will be a dedicated conference. Also heard Shu will personally go to every house in all the territories it sells PS4's in and hand out pamphlets and explain all the details to people individually. He's gone to great efforts to learn every language to be able to do it in their native tongue. Also heard they were going to pull a Sega, and just drop it on the market like the Saturn was...ie announce it for October, but we'll actually see them the day after E3.

I also heard that it's all BS, but that's too much of a stretch to fall in the realm of believable rumors, so I'm reluctant to bring it up here in the wake of so many substantiated and obviously rock solid rumors with tons of real physical evidence to back them up.

one of them has to be right. Guess it's just a gamble to try and add to their credibility. OTOH, they'll all look stupid if it's not real. But if there's a slim, or UHD capable model, at least one of them can claim that's what they always meant.

As far as what people will see under their TV's, expect it to be a cable box. Sony is going after the TV makers, MS will likely go after the cable companies....they already have in fact with the 360. Sony OTOH, actually has a more viable streaming service that cable companies could theoretically use to provide games for their customers for a fee that'll be passed on to the consumer, and some cable companies are exploring that market already...although the games suck at the present time.

I don't think Sony is interested in doing away with the console. It has too much importance to the rest of their business...particularly when new tech is being launched. They do have an interest in expanding their market, and Sony seems more interested in convenient ways of doing that, while for now MS is going the more complex PC route, with the X1 there for convenience. MS should have been going after TV makers years ago when smart TV's were starting to come out. But Sony beat them too it, and their services are already included in most new smart TV's, and unfortunately, I can't see people giving a rats ass about the OS on their TV, or if it's able to run UWP programs since that's not what people buy TV's for. Since MS doesn't have many game services to include in the existing smart TV market, I can't imagine what they can benefit from doing so unless they make the OS itself.

Meh, I still don't know if there will be a Neo, no evidence at all, but that VRWORLD article from last week actually got me thinking that if there is a Neo that that would be the reason (in short: they wanted a Slim but it's cheaper to go with upgraded components instead of having AMD make a 14nm copy of the PS4 APU) and honestly has made the most sense out of all of the rumours...

If E3 wasn't the biggest show of the summer I could understand this. There loss. Two to three times if not more people watch or atleast research what went on at E3 than any other show of the year for gaming.

E3 is goign to be VR focused. they have had they best spotlight for VR this year. with Rift and Vive having shipping issues. most likely i see Sony giving the full details one where you can try one if you didn't pre-order, shows all 50 games coming out this holiday season, and 1st party ps4 games.

When I'm in real doubt it really being anything other than smaller die shrinks. Or Hometheatre versions of the console's being released.

Since Sony also is selling the current PS4 at profit..a new redesign for the console market this early other than die shrinks is going to cost a hell of a lot more for production silicon unless Sony is expecting a reduced price in the ramp up early..x2 GPU, running a upgraded CPU..and no its not the same core that's in the current PS4..Rumor now has it, its not even the same chipsets with tweaks its a whole new chipset!

That was told by such and such over at another Dev studio, who rumor has it has one of these new fangled Dev kits that we heard bakes fresh bread along with cooking you breakfast and makes you a fresh squeezed Orange juice and pours you some vodka in it in the morning because your cool like that as a gamer and also puts deal with it sunglasses on your face as a added bonus.

I mean come on..It will be quite entertainingly awesome if nothing about a upgraded system from Microsoft or Sony even get mentioned this year..and all if these news media sites for gaming take a another further massive hit to their reputation..and as they scramble to than put the blame to.
Its in my opinion no more than becoming Tabloid news at this point.

Everything you said is true. However, the PS Vr is just as expensive as a new console (which is why I lumped it in), especially if you don't have a Move or PS Camera.

And while we don't know for sure what's happening with Neo / X1.5, there needs to be some details if they want anyone to be an early adopter, particularly with other definite options (NX).

All these companies need to start giving us the news. We have some pretty big choices to make. New videocards, PS4 Neo, PSVR, NX.

We need to know WHAT to save up for. Otherwise we might just go ahead and buy what's in front of us, and well, lost sales... at least for a time.

Sure I would like a Neo, especially if it helps PSVR... but I need to know what it costs, how powerful, when... does it have a UHD blu ray player...

Because what I do know is that the 1070 and 1080 are coming out soon.

Sony should really clear this all up in a simple formal announcement. Some people are already saving up, some can't understand why money is even a concern depending on their circumstances and others are planning to sell while second guessing upcoming subscription renewals. Either way, over two months of "rumors" haven't been met with complete optimism which can hurt the brand.

I for one am hoping to see a simple redesigned more efficient slim model or a new PS4 that has the PSVR box built in. In either case, I think there should be no difference in general gaming performance between either model, outside of PSVR performance. The extra juice will help for those who are planning on picking it up.

That's a lot of assumption there. If Sony thought this rumor was affecting them, they would have said something about it. It's been over a month now since this all started, and they wouldn't let it go on that long if it was detrimental to their sales or potential future earnings.

Agreed, with the rumored specs, it will provide 4K streaming media, UHD bluray and a bunch of 4K indie games. Too bad past 6ft. most people can't discern the difference in resolution either way. 4K is meant for PC gaming.

Agree on everything except this part, 4k gaming Can work on both PC gaming and Consoles, but the price is not there yet for Mass adoption for PC and consoles more so on consoles since they are limited on price and size.

Waiting until October with all the current info being leaked out by dev kit documents seems like a mistake. However, maybe a price cut at E3 or Gamescom would be a good step to counter act any consumer hesitation for buying a PS4 in the immediate future and soften any kind of consumer resentment at a new Neo version in October.

Except the dev kit documents don't exist. I can't find them. Other devs can't find them. It's not like they're hard documents for devs to find if they're available. Dev.Net has a section dedicated to documents like this, and believe me, this type of document would have been posted front and center for all it's members to see long before the rumors started. I've yet to see a single dev which has said they have seen a thing about all this. Seems rather odd given it's supposedly 5 months away don't you think?

I don't need the websites to confirm this stuff for me, I can't trust their sources, because I have better sources for this information than they do. I can get this information straight from the horses mouth. I would have by now if it's slated for October, and I wouldn't be here talking about it beyond my thoughts on it as a gamer, because I'd be restricted from doing so by NDA. I couldn't even say they don't exist if they did as that's a breach of NDA. I actually had to find out if saying they don't exist publicly is a breach of NDA(it's not btw because technically it just means I can't find it or it wasn't made available). You know me to be pretty reasonable and mostly knowledgeable. Do you believe I would risk my career now and for the future by fighting with forum goers on this issue by breaching NDA policies?

Why can't people comprehend that if this were going to be a thing, we'd have heard something official, or at least the word would trickle out from named sources. We wouldn't need to rely on dubiously confirmed unnamed sources and forum industry insiders for what we know. When, in the past, have we not heard much more substantiated rumors from actual named sources about hardware that was coming? Suddenly everyone believes that the industry professionals aren't a sieve of leaked information to the perceptive eye?

It is an interesting thought, and one that did occur to me. Flushing out seems a bit unlikely due to the nature of the rumor, as it's kind of a big thing. Most flushing rumors started like this are to get to the root of a leak, and aren't anywhere near as veracious as all this has been. Plus, at this point, I can't imagine how they could track down the leak. Also, things like this are usually coordinated with someone in the press working with them in return for something that will benefit the site.

As far as testing the market. Maybe. But seems excessive. Sony has focus groups for that, although they aren't always accurate. Problem with that scenario is that this rumor is also being attributed to MS, and in fact, they were the first ones to actually start this whole ordeal.

I understand why GB may be more respectable for sourcing than other sites, but they aren't without fault. But to me, it could be that they are being played, and others are getting caught up in it. In which case, the players may be the console makers for market impact purposes, but I'm not knowledgeable enough in such practices to know how they could possibly use what it's become to their advantage.

I think E3 all this will be cleared up one way or another. I said above, "it's the elephant in the room", and I'm sure Sony isn't oblivious to what's being said about it. Despite not seeing anything yet, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist, it just makes it unlikely some parts of the rumor are going to be true...namely Neo compliance by October. It is very possible some select devs have access to the spec sheets or dev kits, but I've mentioned several things which don't seem to make sense with give me more doubt than just the lack of documents on dev.net.

I think the main reason I give the rumor / leak of Neo as being credible is that it was uncovered via Giantbomb and not just some random site. I have listened to them for many years and they have always been careful about rumor vs information... so when they claim to have multiple sources confirming things that tends to make me a believer. I don't always agree with their takes on games but when it comes to information I have found them reliable so far.

Many gamers said Microsoft won last year because of lack of AAA games to play on the PS4..hell gamescom was a large bonus f o r Microsoft and a negative for Sony..but yet here we are.

Winning E3 is not the goal. Winning the hearts and minds of the gamers is what matters with games that gamers enjoy and play. Sony's PS4 is selling on games. That much is clear, it is selling lots of software.and has high attach rates.

Makes sense, they probably don't want the PS4K to cannibalise potential PS4 sales for the several months leading to the PS4K release. Announce it at PGW for a Nov 15th release (3 year anniversary of the PS4 launch) and only lose 2 weeks of sales.

It'd make more sense for them to show it off at the PlayStation Experience, so they can spend as much time talking about the differences between the Neo and the OG PS4 without having to cram it all down into a very short 20 mins or less presentation. Plus I would think more PlayStation fans would be watching Sony's dedicated E3 kinda deal rather than the E3 presentation. It also makes more sense imo, because E3 is more for Sony and other developers to pitch their concept to investors to get them to invest in their products, where as PlayStation Experience is more directed at the actual gamers.

Plus the more time they can spend showing you the capabilities of the Neo, and information they can give you will help those who are on the fence about it, or those who didn't want one to begin with to make the switch.

it makes sense for them to not announce it too soon (if it releases in october or later) as that would only slow down ps4 sales since some people who haven't bought a ps4 will wait to buy the newer ps4...only way i see them announcing the neo at e3 is if they announce a price cut for ps4 as the people who don't care about the neo would just pick up a regular ps4 while the people who want the neo will still wait
