Damn, PlayStation VR is going to crush everything | VRHeads

Sony's VR headset isn't the best, but it's damn close and nothing else matters.

Aceman182902d ago

This title is sure to bring out the disagrees lol. Personally it's not for me but for those who like it have a blast playing.

poppinslops2902d ago

DISAGREEEEEE!!!!!

Seriously though - where is No Man's Sky? Were Hello Games even at E3?
It's due out before Gamescom (which Sony might not even attend), so I'm thinking that's one PSVR announcement that's just not gonna happen... good thing it's coming to PC - modders won't need long to get it running in VR.

Which brings me to my point - basically any PC game can be made to run in VR, then there's the big AAA games like Fallout 4 and Star Citizen which will officially support the Oculus/Vive headsets... and then there's the porn.

Goldby2902d ago

They were busy securing the name of their game to deal with e3. Nms is due out in august and for all we know when psvr is released we could see trailers for vr nms. Everythibg doesnt need to be a big event to make accoucements

It will be an awesome Headset to get.
It has it's own secondary processor that retro-projects the image to the Headset itself, meaning it removes that task off of the PS4 CPU so that it can concentrate itself on the game.
If games like Resident Evil VII and Final Fantasy XV can run VR on the PS4, I think it will be more than capable of handling pretty much every game your want to create.
It has an OLED screen, which will give you the best colours and the deepest black you've ever seen.
OLED has a maximum of 500nits of brightness, unlike 1000nits for standard LED, which is a good thing, because when you have a screen 1 feet from your eyes, you want it a bit less bright to put less eyestrain.
It is wireless and very comfortable, unlike the Occulus Rift, easily adjustable and it tracks it's movement from the camera.

I think this VR is prefect for someone sitting on a couch rather than playing on your 2 feet in a 360 view like the HTC Vibe does. You do have to be careful with the Vibe. You could break the cord, break other objects or hit a wall.

Can anyone confirm if it still plays games in a virtual projection tv like 50 ft as if it were imax? I read that it did, but haven't found anything since

jb2272901d ago

Yeah, I think there will be pros & cons for both headsets really. I don't think there's a clear "winner" in terms of quality.

Oculus & Vive may have the potential for better experiences graphically & performance wise provided the user is willing to drop upwards of $1500 to play them, but from what we know so far, huge console games like Batman Arkham VR, Star Wars X Wing, Psychonauts & RE7 will be exclusive to the PSVR so far, and that's not even factoring in the first party stuff like GT Sport, Ace Combat, Rigs & Farpoint....then there's stuff like Golem & The Journey coming from third parties possibly exclusive to the PSVR.

Seems pretty clear to me, VR is just a microcosm of the current state of gaming itself. Consoles are a bit underpowered compared to PC & less functional than a PC (mainly in terms of Porn) but consoles are also cheaper & possessive of the widest array of huge gaming experiences. PC may have sheer quantity & maybe even variety, but console gaming has always been the best place to experience gaming in its purest form, w/ the biggest games in the entirety of the medium.

As of now I think PSVR will sell the most if Sony has their production down...the controversy behind the Oculus pre order shortages kinda killed a bit of the hype for its launch. I expect PSVR to sell out, but I think all existing orders will be filled & there will be units in store at launch, if only for a short period of time. Another big plus is that while stores like Gamestop are replenishing their stock, gamers will be able to test it out in store, and I'd say a fair few will claim their unit from the next shipment right then & there. I'll be holding off myself but most likely much shorter than I initially thought I would, hearing that stuff that could've been very 'tech demo' ish like Arkham VR is actually very fun to play kinda seals the deal for me...PSVR really seems to be focusing on quality experiences w/ this thing.

Kyizen2901d ago

I'd agree with all if it wasnt for the entry cost of PC VR. For me I'd a new gpu looking at the 1070 which will be $380 then to start the occulus would be $600 thats $1000 for the low end we are talking about. Think about a Vive and 1080...now people have a PS4 you are talking $500 to get started thats half the price.

Noz2901d ago

sure, you can make any game in vr but thats like "you can make every movie in 3D", the point is some will work some not and the best experience is a game thats build from scratch for vr, so, its not that easy, biggest problem is motion sickness, the majority of games would people make sick in notime, and thats not what we want actually, we want people to enjoy vr, not to vomit and feel sick for the rest of the day!

Hairy Chewie2901d ago

@Ultimate Not quite true. All the graphical processing for the PSVR is done on the PS4. The breakout box unwraps the VR image for display on your tv and handles 3D audio and input from the headset.

But you are right about it being awesome.

2901d ago
Sharky2312901d ago

You can play no mans sky through the psvr. It's first person so it's sorta already made for psvr. It would need minimal tweaking to be a full psvr game. That's just my opinion!

IamTylerDurden12901d ago

There are numerous expos before the end of the yr where Sony could announce No Man's Sky on PSVR.

I'm sure the modders will have games running flawlessly in VR...U do realize porting a game to VR involves more than just making it run, right? A game made for VR and a jailbroken game will play very differently.

Fallout 4 is not going to be on Oculus, but it will likely be on PSVR.

Resident Evil 7

Driveclub

GT Sport

VR Worlds

Rigs

Tekken 7 and SFV

DREAMS

Farpoint (with the AIM controller)

Ace Combat 7

Robinson The Journey

Psychonauts

Here They Lie (Sony Santa Monica) Bound (Sony Santa Monica)

Golem

Megaton Rainfall

FFXIV, FFXV

Warthunder, Ark, Project Cars, Eve Valkyrie, The Assembly, Among the Sleep, Technolust

Eagle Flight

Most of those are PSVR exclusives off the top of my head. So many good games coming to PSVR i'm excited. Farpoint and Rigs look epic.

Also.. seeing as RESI 7 VR was making people feel ill.. its a long way off from "crushing" anything

johndoe112112901d ago

That had nothing to do with the headset, it was the game itself.

It doesn't matter what makes you sick, the game or the headset. People is going to see it as VR is the problem, and nobody is paying $400+ for a limited set of games with questionable quality, and some games that make you sick.

I'm pro VR, but it got a long way to go. If it goes too long without catching on, it will be seen as a fad, and the hype will die. So let's hope we get a killer app soon, and not a literally killer app that kills VR.

CocoaBrother2902d ago

"While [Eve: Valkyrie] was only a demo and not likely indicative of launch performance, loading the demo took the PlayStation 4 nearly four minutes."
I really hope loading times aren't this long for other games. I understand that this was only a demo but a 4 minute loading screen is still brutally long, especially when people made a big deal of Bloodborne's 20-40 second loading screens.

freshslicepizza2902d ago

thats a long time and they said the differences were quite severe compared to oculus running the game on a 980ti card (which is an expensive card i know).

looks like psvr has accessibility (which is erally what this topic is about, price and 40 million ps4's out there) and comfort going for it though.

there is a star trek game that looks really cool, not sure what platforms it will support but they played it on htc thrive. it will take some time to get the technology where it ought to be and the games but it sounds like a good starting point.

JackBNimble2901d ago

Star trek bridge crew is for ps4 and pc.

Antnee5342901d ago

I know you called it thrive by accident, but HTC Thrive sounds actually bad ass.

Angeljuice2901d ago (Edited 2901d ago )

Well it fixes some of the problems with the Rift and Vive, is a lot more comfortable, and runs just as well but with reduced (or eliminated) textures.

Not sure how severe the differences are other than textures. I suppose it depends on what value you put on such things.

If the experience is more immersive, the textures shouldn't be as detrimental as they would be in a normal game.

Sounds like 95% of the experience for a fraction of the cost to me.

@Rimfro

The guy in this article works for a VR news site (did you read it). I have heard lots of people who specifically work for VR news sites say it is really good.

You don't get paltry performance at all, most say the experience is almost on par with Rift and Vive, some say the screens solve issues with the Rifts screens;

"Despite being a pair of 960 x 1080 views in a world of 2160 x 1600 displays, you have to really work to see the "screen door" effect commonly seen in VR headsets today. This effect is especially prominent on HTC Vive and Oculus Rift headsets when reading text or looking at a flat white screen, but on the PlayStation VR neither generate the same effect. This is due in large part to the kind of display Sony used, which offers a full RGB subpixel for every pixel on the display. It's a small difference on something like a smartphone or PC display, but when staring at these displays through lenses that warp the image to fill your field of view, it makes a big difference. "

Rimfro2901d ago (Edited 2901d ago )

@Angeljuice But it doesn't run just as well. That's why so many who work for VR news sites have been reporting how many are getting simulation sickness from it. Performance always trumps comfort of the HMD. The Oculus and Vive are vastly smoother, fuller, VR experiences. The Oculus is $600 (PSVR $500 with move) and is vastly superior. PSVR really isn't even that cheap, considering the paltry performance you receive for the cost of entry.

Immorals2901d ago

It's an entry level device. It's cheaper and probably easier to use.

It'll probably be easier to resell than the competition if VR is not your cup of tea. It's the boost VR needs to become mainstream

morganfell2901d ago

Keep making up unsupported remarks ha ha. It only goes to show how worried people have become. PSVR is sold out in the US. Sold out at ever retailer. The only game causing discomfort on any scale at E3 was RE and that has been attributed to the control scheme. The only other discomfort we have seen is the obvious kind from Sony haters.

kfk2901d ago

@Rimfro: Why are you including the move controller price with PSVR, but not including the Rift Touch controller's potential price with Oculus? Because you're trying to be deliberately misleading.

Some games on my CBM 64 used to take over 45 minutes to load (or fail to load).

I waited because it was worth it to play the games (some of which were terrible).

I wouldn't wait 45 minutes to play "Jetpack" today, but I would wait a lot longer than 4 mins to experience something phenomenal that I haven't yet experienced.

Now it's down to Sony to prove that PSVR is something phenomenal.

As of now, I am undecided.

Antnee5342901d ago

I think rigs will turn this into a must buy once people have it in their homes. After watching multiple videos on it the game looks amazing.

CBaoth2901d ago (Edited 2901d ago )

for good reason too Angel. I really can't wait until we see how these IPs perform on a Neo. I knew despite assurances from Sony execs, there were going to be some issues running VR on stock PS4s. I do think the Neo will provide a great entry pricepoint for VR compared to alternatives, especially if one needs to invest in a Scorpio/Occulus combo. Even on the PC, upgrading your GPU and buying a VR headset will cost slightly more for awhile than purchasing Sony's new console, headset, and camera.

As for the games, I do think Riggs, Star Trek, and Battlezone look fun. Ace Combat, Eve Valkyrie, and SW VR missions are natural fits (space sims will make a resurgence in the coming years). Sony and Hello Games are probably holding closer to 10/13 to tout NMS VR mode. Watch the Angry Joe top E3 games 2016 and listen to his colleague, Tons of Fun. His Battlezone testimonial got me more hyped for VR in general than anything so far from these companies.

Antnee5342901d ago

The thing with the vive is that the 360 walking feature Is really awesome it just takes up so much room that I don't have. So I can't use the feature :\, but the price also kills it for some people. Once all these headsets are in their second iteration they will all be cheaper. That's when we will get mainstream vr

stuna12901d ago

People don't realize practically every situation we've encountered in the world was at some point a gimmick! Think about it, when the first automobile hit the street it was in fact a gimmick! It wasn't something that was widely known and tested by the general public.

Think about a specialty burger at a well known restaurant. The restaurant may be well known, but the specialty burger may not be, but through the reputation of restaurant the specialty burger is more apt to be tried even though it's not well known.

After playing a few games on my gear s7 I would to say it's not a gimmick! Kinect for me never lived up to any of its promise. Scanning items in, social features, shopping, Milo, virtual keyboard board and games that would change everything. VR is a different beast because not only does it work but the games we see videos of or even pictures look ten times better through the visor.

Gunstar752901d ago

I have the gear VR and s7 edge and apart from pretty visible pixels, I was impressed.
PSVR did make me consider buying a ps4, but I'm gonna hold out and see what MS/Scorpio will bring.

Yeah so gimmicky literally every tech company is now heavily invested in it's future, so gimmicky that Billions are being poured into it's development, so gimmicky that not only gaming but film, sport, medicine, education etc are all looking to take advantage of this new media.

When are you people going to wake up, VR is here to stay, this is not another kinect.

Death2901d ago

Give me a list of literally every tech company and we will compare it to the list of companies invested in the tech. Your list of non-gaming uses looks more like the list for AR.

amiga-man2901d ago (Edited 2901d ago )

Death you have obviously not been following whats been going on with VR, when I say every major tech company I mean every major tech company, you name a big name tech company they are involved in VR in some way.

VR and AR go hand in hand, both have big futures, non are exclusive to the other.

TKCMuzzer2901d ago (Edited 2901d ago )

@Death,this is true.

I saw a BBC article the other day showing how VR was helping people with phobias, like vertigo and claustrophobia. It was very interesting and it's uses are wide, from medical to entertainment. The tech will only improve and so will it's effectiveness.

Sony Says The PS5 Is Its “Most Profitable Generation To-Date"

During Sony’s recent business segment meeting and investor presentation regarding its game and network services, the PlayStation company revealed that PlayStation 5 is the company’s “most profitable generation to-date.”

It’s the top slide of the presentation, showing that in its first four years, the PS5 generation has already hit $106 billion in sales, having almost caught up to the PS4’s total $107 billion generated.

Operating income for the PS5 generation has also already surpassed that of the PS4, having now reached $10 billion.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I wouldn't doubt it. They released a high quality system. A lot of high quality games from themselves and their support of 3rd party developers and indies. They released many high quality remakes and remasters. They released a high quality GaaS game going against the naysayers thinking Sony would abandon single player games. And they most likely are profiting a lot more than PS1, PS2 PS4 and the loss leading PS3 that drained all their profits.

Now, I'll wait to see what's cooking tomorrow. But can you use some of those profits to better support your high quality VR headset? Because, by supporting it, you can sell more games and more systems and make more profits?

jznrpg2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

If it had some rpgs I would buy right fking now. It looks dope and alot of fun, but it's biggest game resident evil 4(maybe) I've got no interest in. I'm not a fan of racing games, even with that metro game coming i was never much into that series. Rpgs would be fantastic.

MrNinosan2d ago

Lemme know if ya wanna play some Zenith 🙌
Bought it at release, but haven't played it more than 1-2 hours but for sure on my "todo list".

Cacabunga2d ago

Normal when they released mostly cross gen games so far. That’s a lot of money saved..
We haven’t seen what PS5 can do yet. 4years in and PS4 games still look great to me. The gen leap isn’t quite there yet.

--Onilink--2d ago

The interesting metric for me is the $106billion in operating income/profit (not sales as mentioned in the article) reaching the same as the PS4 did with only half the consoles sold.

In particular because they all are supposed to be making the most per hardware sold after a few years when manufacturing costs are down.

So even putting inflation aside(and the higher console price), it is interesting that they could reach PS4 $ with just half the consoles sold.

Maybe there is more to the metric thats whats seen at face value, but they have clearly been making a lot more money than before on the software side (with also less games released I suppose, given its only been half the generation so far)

VersusDMC2d ago

The bulk of the money has to be coming from the 30% cut on all games and microtransactions. Especially on all the free to play juggernauts like genshin, apex, fortnight, etc.

--Onilink--2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

@Versus

They are definitely making a lot on that for sure (which the $70 price increase factors into as well), but its not like many of those games werent around for the PS4 too.

They might be counting the gen as a whole and not just PS5 itself (so extra profit from PC sales, whatever that may be)

PS+ price increase and different tiers probably amount to part of that too.

But in general, its still quite a surprising metric. Half the time, half the consoles sold, less first party games released so far and still already making more of a profit than last gen is quite something, and as mentioned, there is probably more to it that we dont know, after all, since we are talking about operating income, all the expenses they have also factor into it, so it is also possible that they have found ways to significantly reduce that + all the means of increased revenue that appear to be factoring into the equation

All in all, just an interesting situation from a business perspective

porkChop2d ago

It's for the whole generation, so it would likely be including PC. They also make much more profit on digital sales vs retail, and digital is far more prominent these days. The generation also started at the height of COVID when everyone was home, spending far more money on gaming/hobbies. It makes a lot of sense for this gen to be more profitable.
