What Does the Nintendo Switch Mean for PlayStation?

Push Square: "Is the Nintendo Switch going to go up against the PlayStation 4, or is it attempting to carve out a niche all for itself? Does this really spell the end for the Vita – and potentially Sony's time in the handheld space? And are there any similarities between the House of Mario's new machine and the PlayStation maker's past moves in the portable sector?"

Wouldn't be surprised if Sony copies Nintendo in terms of portable gaming and then adds a few things of their own to the mix.

Nitrowolf22780d ago (Edited 2778d ago )

Well tbf Sony has been doing this thing called remote play for a very long time.

I mentioned this right after e3 that Nintendo would be doing something the competition has been doing and this was it.
http://n4g.com/news/1921949...
The thing is, Nintendo gonna do it a lot better IMO because I understand you don't need Internet and it's an all in one thing.

It's gonna be really interesting, and this console certainly has my interest.

@Neon

You do know that's no longer true right, as long as you have a a good enougg speed you can access it from anywhere
Plus I've already said Nintendo doing it better by making it an all in one priduct rather than separate devices that need purchasing.

zeal0us2780d ago

But but but it's not the same
-Nintendo loyalist

@gaming cousin
Sony at this point don't even need to copy Nintendo. Their console is the top seller of this generation. Nintendo need to play catch up and hope the switch don't becomes the WiiU 2.

Gaming_Cousin2780d ago (Edited 2780d ago )

@Nitrowolf

Yeah, and wasn't Sony the first to market motion controls on the PS2?

The all in one thing is the reason why this is better than remote play because you do not have to buy an additional console to get it functioning.

I think it would be smart if Sony copies the changing controllers thing because certain games are played better with certain controllers

Neonridr2780d ago

remote play is NOT the same. First off you had to be on the same network for it to even work. As soon as you leave the house, game over.

Similar maybe, but does not deliver the same experience.

"Red Dead Redemption 2 on Nintendo NX? Take-Two is “Very Interested” in Console"

Yet they didn't announce it for the Switch

darthv722778d ago

What it means is that Nintendo liked the short lived idea of a plug and play hybrid that Sony had (PSP Go) and wanted to take it one step further.

See... im one of the few who appreciates what the Go offered. 16gb of internal storage with the ability to add to it with M2 cards (i have an additional 8gb in mine), tv dock and play feature with real controller support (sixaxis bluetooth functionality) and full digital PSP, PS1 and PS Mini library.

It was nice to play on the move but even nicer to play on a tv. It was 480p component output and many shunned it because it lacked the UMD drive to play the full PSP library. Well... for those there was always the PSP 2000 / 3000 but those lacked bluetooth for real controller play.

Only drawback to the Go was no local multiplayer. Something the switch looks to offer. Switch is nothing new in the sense but Nintendo sees the time as right to create a single platform that serves two purposes. Portability for those who want that and stationary console play for others who prefer that. No splitting the userbase because it is the same ecosystem.

Nintendo.... taking something old and making it new again.

Cindy-rella2778d ago

It means nothing really. I saw someone said that sony might copy nes switches idea which is very funny because sony has been doing the same premise or years since psp and more so with the ps4 and vita. Its called share play

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory2778d ago

except Remote play you need
- PS4
- Very Good Connection
- All games doesn't support Remote Play

So its not the same.
Switch is just out/input. No Connection, No need for another hardware and will be for all games unless Nintendo reveals that developers can disable it if they want.

eternalarsenal2778d ago

Neonridr the way remote play work. Local or any outside network works for it on the ps4.

Lightning Mr Bubbles2778d ago (Edited 2778d ago )

The answer is no, I'm not interested in playing console games like Zelda or Skyrim on the go. Those are serious and engrossing games and nothing compares to playing them in the comfort of my home and on a good size TV not some little mini screen.

As far as portable games, I don't care anything about that, never been into 3DS or anything like that. To me the Nintendo Switch, I will judge it as a "home console" only. I have always like the Mario and Zelda's so I'm interested. I was an owner of Nintendo GameCube and that was the last Nintendo console I bought and even if it didn't sell good, I liked it. Not as much as my PS2 but it was a good secondary console. That new Mario game looked pretty good and Zelda Breath of the Wild looks interesting, so to me the Nintendo Switch is just like another GameCube, but that's just me personally. I am indeed way more interested in Nintendo Switch than I ever was about the Wii.

But I also have questions like what happens to the Nintendo DS brand, is this suppose to replace Nintendo's handhelds also? The Caslevania games from Nintendo DS where the only thing I wished I could play, and if this is meant to replace Nintendo handhelds will it get the kind of support the DS handhelds usually get? That might be cool to play some of those games on a real TV. That could open up some possibilities of me being interested in some type of games, I normally wouldn't. But again it brings up a point, what does Nintendo Switch mean to Nintendo's handheld market?

The talk is about Nintendo bringing console gaming on the go, but what about reverse? Nintendo bringing Handheld gaming to the TV?

miyamoto2778d ago

PSP 3000 was both portable and a home console connected to a TV.

zombiewombie2778d ago

You mean the whole portable being able to dock to TV? Sony did that with psp go. The vita even has an hdmi out port to connect to a TV, but was never utilized. No one is trying to copy Nintendo. Nintendo has more to prove than any of the other 2. Sony is ahead in sales, why would they want to copy a company that isn't on their radar at the moment.

Nintendo is amazing go Switch!

"I knew Scorpio zealots were foolish for clinging onto a single digit teraflop figure as if it told the whole story.

Their very, very secret sauce for XB1 has always been a bunch of highly embarrassing and delusional crap that we've had to fend away for years. Meanwhile, traces of secret sauce spill from Sony HQ and it's actually the real deal from the master-level engineer who architected the original PS4.

Now PS4 Pro is confirmed to be capable of 8.4TF of GPU compute due to the genius of Mark Cerny and his smartly re-engineered GPU. Additional 1GB of RAM. Then we also have another one of his innovations in Checkerboard rendering which makes the difference between it and native 4K practically indistinguishable. But that's not even the real story.... Pro comes out 12 months in advance and will be the console to "wow" people with 4K so much so that Scorpio's arrival will be late and far less impactful, especially when you know it's not going to be everything they're promising.

Pro is a more than worthy upgrade for gaming unlike what certain people have been trying to paint since its official reveal event - and it comes at such a reasonable cost, it almost crazy it's the price they're going for. "

Ck1x2778d ago

This is the kind of misinformation that will get paraded around as facts here on N4G!

DigitalRaptor2778d ago (Edited 2778d ago )

@ Ck1x

There's absolutely nothing misinforming about my comment.

Magiciandude a.k.a. Green_gangsta8 is just concerned that people are no longer following his sad tirade of hate for the PS4 Pro, now that we know more about it from the man who made it, and is bitter that I'm talking about the reality of what that means on N4G... a place where he's been banned from with sock accounts, multiple times.

- 16-bit half-precision floating point operations allow for double the GPU compute capacity. FACT.

- Pro has an additional 1GB of RAM. FACT.

- And then there's the 95-98% "indistinguishable from native", which we've already heard from people who have seen the differences. Funnily, the ones bagging on that claim are the Scorpio zealots who haven't seen it to make the distinction. [I might not have seen the differences for myself either, but I'd rather be that guy than someone that has been so deeply insecure and mentally ruined by the inconsequential nature of damage controlling the hardware of the Xbox One for 4 years that when they thought they FINALLY had the upper hand, it was quickly doused by Sony innovation, and are now getting more desperate than they were at the start of this gen.]

- Pro comes out 12 months in advance and will make the first impact as a 4K gaming machine.

Where is the misinformation, buddy? The funny thing is, this desperate individual who thought that Microsoft held all the cards with Scorpio is now doing me a favour by spamming my factual comment around N4G, after he got banned for exposing himself and insulting others. If anything, he's the one that is spreading the "misinformation" you're worried about, even though none of it is misinformation.

kraenk122778d ago

Quit spamming Rookie! You seem desperate. Digital Raptor is right and you know it.

LamerTamer2777d ago (Edited 2777d ago )

So I guess Scorpio will have 12 TF GPU when they use this same technique? MS still wins.

Scorpio also has 4 GB additional memory instead of only one, again advantage xbox. The pro will be good this year, but the Scorpio will trump it next year.

Yeah for the US and Europe probably doesnt mean much at all but Japan. That is something that is going to be a interesting battle considering 80% of the developers on the list for the Switch are Japanese and have supported the 3DS with numerous games. So yeah the Vita already kinda falling off in Japan as PS4 is much cheaper now but if the Switch launch at a cheaper price. That could bring interesting outcome next year.

Antnee5342778d ago

This In my opinion is what consoles need to do if they want to stay become a main stay in Japanese culture. They were going the way of dead for a long time I feel like the switch will bring back the console community in Japan

Sony Says The PS5 Is Its “Most Profitable Generation To-Date"

During Sony’s recent business segment meeting and investor presentation regarding its game and network services, the PlayStation company revealed that PlayStation 5 is the company’s “most profitable generation to-date.”

It’s the top slide of the presentation, showing that in its first four years, the PS5 generation has already hit $106 billion in sales, having almost caught up to the PS4’s total $107 billion generated.

Operating income for the PS5 generation has also already surpassed that of the PS4, having now reached $10 billion.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I wouldn't doubt it. They released a high quality system. A lot of high quality games from themselves and their support of 3rd party developers and indies. They released many high quality remakes and remasters. They released a high quality GaaS game going against the naysayers thinking Sony would abandon single player games. And they most likely are profiting a lot more than PS1, PS2 PS4 and the loss leading PS3 that drained all their profits.

Now, I'll wait to see what's cooking tomorrow. But can you use some of those profits to better support your high quality VR headset? Because, by supporting it, you can sell more games and more systems and make more profits?

jznrpg2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I want RPGs for PSVR2! Good ones of course

shinoff21832d ago

If it had some rpgs I would buy right fking now. It looks dope and alot of fun, but it's biggest game resident evil 4(maybe) I've got no interest in. I'm not a fan of racing games, even with that metro game coming i was never much into that series. Rpgs would be fantastic.

MrNinosan2d ago

Lemme know if ya wanna play some Zenith 🙌
Bought it at release, but haven't played it more than 1-2 hours but for sure on my "todo list".

Cacabunga2d ago

Normal when they released mostly cross gen games so far. That’s a lot of money saved..
We haven’t seen what PS5 can do yet. 4years in and PS4 games still look great to me. The gen leap isn’t quite there yet.

--Onilink--2d ago

The interesting metric for me is the $106billion in operating income/profit (not sales as mentioned in the article) reaching the same as the PS4 did with only half the consoles sold.

In particular because they all are supposed to be making the most per hardware sold after a few years when manufacturing costs are down.

So even putting inflation aside(and the higher console price), it is interesting that they could reach PS4 $ with just half the consoles sold.

Maybe there is more to the metric thats whats seen at face value, but they have clearly been making a lot more money than before on the software side (with also less games released I suppose, given its only been half the generation so far)

VersusDMC2d ago

The bulk of the money has to be coming from the 30% cut on all games and microtransactions. Especially on all the free to play juggernauts like genshin, apex, fortnight, etc.

--Onilink--2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

@Versus

They are definitely making a lot on that for sure (which the $70 price increase factors into as well), but its not like many of those games werent around for the PS4 too.

They might be counting the gen as a whole and not just PS5 itself (so extra profit from PC sales, whatever that may be)

PS+ price increase and different tiers probably amount to part of that too.

But in general, its still quite a surprising metric. Half the time, half the consoles sold, less first party games released so far and still already making more of a profit than last gen is quite something, and as mentioned, there is probably more to it that we dont know, after all, since we are talking about operating income, all the expenses they have also factor into it, so it is also possible that they have found ways to significantly reduce that + all the means of increased revenue that appear to be factoring into the equation

All in all, just an interesting situation from a business perspective

porkChop2d ago

It's for the whole generation, so it would likely be including PC. They also make much more profit on digital sales vs retail, and digital is far more prominent these days. The generation also started at the height of COVID when everyone was home, spending far more money on gaming/hobbies. It makes a lot of sense for this gen to be more profitable.

Wow! I am super impressed that in just 4 years, ps5 already caught up to the PS4's. Congratulations.

JackBNimble1d 15h ago

That happens when half of your games are cross platform. I'm still waiting to see what the ps5 is capable of, because they sure haven't pushed any limits.

And where are all these ps5 exclusive games?

sagapo2d ago

Not really surprised as Sony barely has any competition at the moment.
