'Great Decision' to Sell Naughty Dog to Sony, Says Co-Founder

While Jason Rubin and Andy Gavin "definitely agonized over it," Rubin stands behind their decision to sell Naughty Dog to Sony.

UCForce2720d ago

ND made a right choice to join Sony. Sony confident their first party studio will success. A new ip is always a good thing to make thing fresh that keep audience interested.

NotanotherReboot2720d ago (Edited 2720d ago )

Jak and Daxter is the right choice imo

darthv722720d ago

ND needs to bring back Way of the Warrior for the PS4.

DashArrivals2720d ago

That would be a terrible idea. Naughty Dog have evolved passed that IP. Why can't Sony let another studio make that game? Uncharted: Golden Abyss was awesome and that was done by another studio. I think if Jak & D come back, then another studio should handle that game.

dohji2720d ago

I wholeheartedly agree. Unfortunately Nathan and Ellie are the only characters ND gives a damn about anymore.

UCForce2720d ago (Edited 2720d ago )

Let them make a new ip. It's their choice, not your to choose and judge. I think you will never learn.

NotanotherReboot2720d ago

Theres nothing wrong with Jak and Daxter. its a great Ip for all ages and they must make it again

UCForce2720d ago (Edited 2720d ago )

Let's other studio do it. Every Sony First Party studios are making new ip.

Edit : Look, if you want these franchise back, it gonna be awhile.

Retroman2720d ago

Thinking same thing. maybe we'll see Crash and Daxter on ps4 now.

Since life like a revolving door (repeat itself ) they eventually would reappear anyway .

bouzebbal2720d ago

They are one of the best, even if I prefer less mature games in general

Lore2720d ago

Agree 100%. And this is the studio that could evolve the series just as Santa Monica Studio is evolving Kratos.

morganfell2719d ago

@dohji,

Are you using those names to refer to the IPs Uncharted and TLOU? I ask because I found Elena and Joel more important. Not as central characters but for me, and likely only for me I wanted them to survive. Thankfully Amy Hennig did not get her way. And if you are saying ND is a two trick pony, before TLOU everyone said they were a one trick pony. If they release another IP you will be as wrong as the initial group of people. Great IPs are the pedigree of ND. It has to do with how that studio functions.

Nintendo should've bought Square Soft back in the day. I also woder what could've been if Nintendo and Sony had a successful collaboration with the hybrid console.

Fist4achin2720d ago

I'm kind of glad they didn't merge. I've been happy with Playstation as a brand since the beginning. Nintendo has made numerous decisions that I thought were horrible and their only saving grace is an occasional product that does kick ass and upholds their failures. I don't want to see Nintendo go away, but lately I have not been fond of the direction of the company and their products.

0Day2720d ago

Nintendo should have bought Rare, they would have still been great.

bloop2720d ago

I'm glad that Nintendo/Sony console never happened too. I don't think the gaming industry would have gotten to where it is today without the PS1. Sony really went for the more mature audience which is something Nintendo would never have done.

FallenAngel19842720d ago

It was the best decision they could make

UCForce2720d ago (Edited 2720d ago )

Even I'm glad Sony let GG made a new ip which I'm excited Horizon Zero Dawn in the first place. I love Killzone franchise but I'm glad developers let their franchise rest and do something new for change.

Edit : @UltraNova it will happen but it gonna be awhile.

UltraNova2720d ago

Yes but i still want KZ2 or KZ4 on my ps4...

XanderZane2719d ago

It definitely was a great decision. PS1 was huge back then when ND was making the Crash Games. Any dev would have wanted to work for Sony back then. They were able to acquire quality developers to take over for Jason & Andy. I can still remember interviewing them in Cambridge, MA when they were making "Way of the Warrior" for the 3DO. Due to a very poor 3DO controller, the game the controls weren't the best. The game was pretty average. Still both guys were enthusiast and very knowledgeable. Andy was going to M.I.T. at the time. I still have the interview in my VGT Online mag. Spoke to them several times at the E3. Great guys.

Neonridr2720d ago

Having virtually unlimited capital backing one of the industries best studios was a no brainer. Smart move by Sony locking them up.

Relientk772720d ago

They are easily one of the best devs out there. Really glad they're with Sony

Aloy-Boyfriend2720d ago (Edited 2720d ago )

Like some of us were saying some days ago here, Sony made Naughty Dog who they are now. They are never leaving Sony or pulling a Bungie.

The endless budgets plus the little oversight Sony has on them is something exemplary. It is why they make amazing games one after another

kevnb2720d ago

I feel like they make exactly what Sony wants.

_-EDMIX-_2720d ago

It's why I believe such a symbiotic relationship is beneficial for both parties.

This is one of the rare instances where a publisher is correct to purchase a developer.

Sony as a publisher is basically always pushing brand new properties every single generation as new franchises or series if they're successful enough.

Most Publishers do not do this on a regular basis.

This allows their Studios to always have fresh new ideas.

I wish the entire industry worked this way in the respect of Publishers always welcoming in New properties but I completely understand the Financial Risk that's involved.

I'm not going to pretend that like lair ,folklore, Heavenly sword and other titles did it fall to the Wayside because of this direction.

But in the same respect they also got Uncharted ,Infamous, resistance ,The Last of Us etc

Sony is not afraid to lose a few eggs to make a perfect cake and I'm completely okay with that but I also 100% respect and understand that some of those failures could essentially destroy smaller publishers.

phoenixwing2720d ago

@edmix

Folklore and heavenly sword definitely are some of my fav games. Although they didn't sell gangbusters I'd love to see some sequels

UltraNova2720d ago

@edmix

Folklore??? Oh the ps3 early day memories...that game was pure magic really special. Heavenly Sword while a solid, well acted game was never going to rise above GoW and become a mainstay. As for Lair...lets be honest the heart was there but the effort and execution were not.

nitus102720d ago (Edited 2720d ago )

Those words imply that Sony dictates to Naughty Dog. I think it is better to say "they (Naughty Dog) makes games that make the Playstation brand great".

@ _-EDMIX-_

Well said. I think the words "symbiotic relationship" sums it all up.

@phoenixwing

Folklore? I almost forgot about that. IMHO a more mature version of Pokemon and a surprisingly interesting story as told from two perspectives. I actually found it was best (some may disagree) to alternate between characters after each mission.

Heavenly Sword? I really have not played that for years. I still have it though.

Damn games like these and Skyrim and Unc... (err let's not go there!). This is why I held off buying a PS4 for two years.

Inzo2720d ago

Agreed but more importantly, ND makes exactly what gamers want.

Every PlayStation Studios game available now on Windows PC

Windows Central writes: "Many PlayStation Studios games that are ported to PC get dedicated PS5 DualSense support, which allows users to experience haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support without actually having to own a PS5.

According to Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, it's still the company's intent to launch the bigger single-player games on PS5 first, before later bringing the games to PC. This might not be the case for multiplayer games however, which are considered okay to launch simultaneously on console and PC."

My guess is after god of war. Probably last of us 2 that's a almost 4 year old game now and by the time it's released on pc it will be more than 4 years old or close to 5.

Days Gone Director Says Bend's Project Costs Over $250M; Says PS Co-CEO Doesn't Want 2 Zombies Games

Days Gone director claims Sony has already poured in at least a $250M in Bend's project; says Days Gone sold more than Death Stranding.

shinoff218318h ago

Well that sucks. Seems they want more online trash. I'd rather of had the sequel if it was single player

MrNinosan3h ago

What online trash games did PS Studios release last 10 years?

Notellin1h ago

The past has nothing to do with the future. This is such a terrible argument. Everyone knows about their current live service push.

_SilverHawk_30m ago

It's so tragic what happened to days gone. It is such an amazing game but bandwagoners trashed it and it underperformed in it's launch year. Days gone is the best open world zombie game released in the past five years. I was recently playing it on pc and I'm still amazed by it.

Games are very expensive to make and it seems like it's normal for a AAA game to cost over a quarter billion to make so if a quality game like days gone greatly underperforms then people shouldn't be upset when they see a lot of GAAS. I still remember a lot of bandwagoners calling days gone trash but years later it's now amazing when it's considered a failure by sony.

If a game isn't the best thing seen since hats with pockets then a lot of gamers who haven't played it automatically calls it rubbish and whoever made it should be incarcerated

-Foxtrot18h ago

It would be a shame if it was true that Hermen never gave the franchise a chance simply because he didn't like it and they already had a "Zombie" game with TLOU.

NaughtyDog are most likely moving onto a new IP next so it would have been the perfect time to do it.

ThinkThink10h ago

Here's where xbox steps in and releases state of decay 3 day and date on ps5.

Grilla3h ago

Days gone 2 was canceled before Herman was in charge. That happened like 4 years ago.

vfl5232h ago

4 years ago he was head of Playstation Studios. He would've probably had a hand in the cancelation.

Notellin1h ago

Man two seconds of research could have saved you from this comment. Amazing work Grilla you fit in with the uniformed N4G community who speaks before verifying anything that they say.

Redemption-6424m ago

Maybe encourage people to buy the game at full price and not when it's heavily discounted or go on plus. If this game had sold well when it was full priced a sequel would have been in the works. They made a single-player game that most people didn't support until they dropped the price.

excaliburps4h ago

Yep. Kind of weird since it wasn't a sales flop, no?

I know we have to take what Ross says with a grain of salt since we're hearing just one side of the story, but even so, the game wasn't bad at all. Heck, it's my brother's favorite last-gen game from what I recall.

The amount of zombies on screen, imagine that with the PS5 and SSD? That would be insanely fun!

Grilla3h ago

Most copies were sold on sale. Not enough ppl bought it at full price. I paid 20$ for it 6 -7 months after release.

Notellin1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Yeah we should never believe the creators side until we hear the corporate/big business side as history has shown we should always believe billion dollar corporations.

What a bootlicker statement.

P_Bomb3h ago

Well I don’t want 10 live service games, but they have no problem doing that lol. Ugh.

CrimsonWing693h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Oh great so we only get what the big wigs want… y’know, the people that really have their fingers on the pulse of what their consumers want. Faaaaantastic!

rippermcrip25m ago

Well consider they know the sales... they do know what the consumer wants.

It sold shit.

Trying to push players over from PC to console is a terrible idea, PlayStation

As PlayStation announces its new strategy to encourage PC users to choose PS5 it is a bitter-sweet moment for PC gamers.

Christopher19h ago

I mean, it's a business based on hardware market. Do we expect them to not even try? It's not like Nintendo doesn't do the same by not putting any games on PC and Microsoft until recently did the same. I don't care what they attempt, as long as they don't abuse the community or lie about their goals/requirements.

Will it work? Not likely. Should we care? No. Let them waste their time, it doesn't affect anything.

RaidenBlack19h ago

let them try ... at the end of the day, we get few extra PC games ... yay ... and also promotes game preservation via PC ... so double yay.

LordoftheCritics2h ago

If only Playstation games provided the ease of pc gaming features.

Primary being very few PS games support m/kb.

Fishy Fingers18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

I wish them the best of luck.

But PC players are often a patient bunch, many will even wait for Epic launcher exclusivity to end until a game comes to Steam.

If they didnt buy the console when its games were exclusive, why would they do it now theyre not?

MrNinosan4h ago

Way more do than you probably think.

ravens524h ago

All you need is that one game that'll make a few switch at a time. Like a game a PC player REALLY wants.

outsider162438m ago

I mean if there's 10 million pc gamers out there...getting atleast just 1 million from there is probably a good thing..right?

-Foxtrot18h ago

PC gamers are just too patient and loyal to their gaming set ups, something they've spent a lot of money on to perfect. They have backlogs of games which many never get round to finishing or get round to at all and will always have other multiplatform releases to keep them going.

Over the many years Sony has published so many awesome titles such as The Last of Us, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Infamous, Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, Dreams, Puppeteer, Resistance, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo, Motor Storm, God of War, Horizon, Ratchet and Clank, Spiderman, Ghost of Tsushima, Bloodborne

If none of those games BEFORE all these PC ports convinced a hardcore PC gamer to get a PS5 console then why on Earth would porting them them to PC now make any difference? All PC gamers now know 100% is that they just have to be patient, which they are good at anyway to get a PS5 game 2 years later.

I get GaaS games or multiplayer focused titles but if people really want to play these games they'd have gotten a PS console years ago.

Crows901h ago

Not sure they're aiming to convince the hardcore PC gamer.

Not sure why people are obsessing over his comment...it seems pretty simple to me.

He will do all he can to entice gamers to move to his ecosystem. As you say....exclusives existing hasn't moved many gamers over. But if they get to try them and love the games then they might change their mind about waiting 2 years.

We're in an echo chamber on this site...I've Personally seen people with Xbox and PC setups but no PlayStation. I've also seen people with small PC setups but no console. Not every pc gamer invests thousands and many may decide to put one in the living room.

They're not looking to convince all of players to buy a PlayStation...just a few...and really it is just a PR statement after all...they have to give a reason why single player won't release day 1....not to mention they also have to ensure current PlayStation gamers don't jump ship to PC. It goes both ways and they're ignoring the big L by putting any of their games off their platform.

Kakashi Hatake41m ago

PC gamers think tomorrow is promised. Sorry, don't have time for that.

helicoptergirl17h ago

Who cares? Then just stay on PC and play the waiting game. No big deal. Sony wins in the end anyway.

Number1TailzFan17h ago

I mean if there's any single player Sony games that I actually want that aren't on PC then I would buy said console to play them on. But the ones that I like that aren't on PC are few and far between anyway so no loss for me.

If I game, it's usually multiplayer titles, otherwise I like playing around with some other software.
