Ori Dev Clarifies Xbox Scorpio Comments Further, Apologizes For PS4 Pro Remark

Thomas Mahler, a developer on Ori and the Blind Forest, has created quite a stir recently in the last few days, thanks to his comments alleging that the Xbox Scorpio will be a full fledged generational upgrade, and calling the PS4 Pro is 'half assed.'

Well, be professional and respect your competitors next time.

ThePope2681d ago

He's a game developer not a hardware manufacturer. His competitors are Bethesda, ND, Epic, etc. He hurt fragile feelings it sounds like to me...

Juiceid2681d ago

That's a common problem with the world today
Everyone has to apologize when they say something others didn't like. Yet everyone is supposed to have a voice and be heard, except when whatever they're saying isn't liked by whoever is listening and cries about it.

rainslacker2681d ago (Edited 2681d ago )

Why mention the competition if he's not even developing games on it? Why was the lower powered console this gen so far OK for his game, when apparently Sony had a real next gen console by his standards.

If his competition is other developers, why is he commenting on hardware that his games won't ever come anywhere close to taking full advantage of?

Don't get me wrong, the guy is a good game designer, but his games aren't exactly cutting edge.

His comment was fanboyish, and that's unprofessional from a developer. Those people he pissed off with his comments may one day be his customers. Most developers tend to be more diplomatic. The one's that aren't, tend to get a lot of hate, regardless of where they fall on console preference. I'm sure there are some PS focused devs who have criticized MS that MS fans don't like. No different here.

Guy represents himself, and he is the face of his games. As such, while his opinions are his own, and he's free to have them, it doesn't mean he's free from criticism. The fact that his comment was worthy of an article to express those views with him sourced by name, gives him enough credit to be criticized, and as such, he should be more diplomatic with how he addresses the community.

TKCMuzzer2681d ago

Maybe but there is a way of saying things in a professional manner, life is full of swings and roundabouts, he maybe ok now but he doesn't know what the future holds. Talking loosely of one of the big players in your industry is never a good thing, he may need them one day to help further his career, fulfil his gaming ambitions, life moves on and it's best to make sure you keep all your paths clear going forward.

TankCrossing2681d ago

@rainslacker why shouldn't he comment? How many people commenting here have games coming to PS4 Pro or Scorpio?

Is it a rule that in order to participate in a conversation one must not know anything about the topic?

bouzebbal2681d ago

Lol what an excuse... Not being a native English speaker. Then don't write in English you moron

Mr Pumblechook2681d ago

He has an exclusive coming to the Scorpio. He is only reciting the mantra heard from Microsoft behind closed doors. Watch out, this Scorpio PR in 2017 is going to get dirty!

joab7772680d ago

Everyone doesn't have to apologize but it isn't smart to offend a company that you may want to do business with.

QUIMICOMORTAL2680d ago

Not really! he's not that important to begin with! it didint mean much when it said it and it doesnt mean much now that he apologizes.

thekhurg2680d ago

Or he realized they better play nice when it comes to Sony and their 2:1 sales advantage. Just in case they want to make some money by making a game on the more successful platform.

rainslacker2680d ago

Never said he couldn't comment. Just said he's not free from criticism based on those comments. He's a developer, and as such, he, and we, should hold him to a higher standard. His comment didn't add anything to the discussion. It didn't discuss the advantages of the "next gen" Scorpio vs the "half-a**ed" PS4P.

He's a developer, and as such will be held to that standard. If he was some forum goer, then his comment wouldn't have warranted an article, and would have been failed. If he was some website, he could have whatever opinion he wants, and post an article here, and be criticized for it.

So, yes, I encourage commenting by developers....some what since it usually backfires and it's hardly worth it....but at the same time, I encourage them do it in a manner which is professional.

"For us it's very acceptable that Microsoft invests in this area. But just upping output resolution of a conventional game console and improving graphics power don't expand the world of game consoles as of today. This is only XBOX 1.5 rather than a next-generation XBOX. Rather than replacing what existent game console vendors have been doing with high-performance hardware, I want them to find a totally new field by their own originality. If they do so, we can expand the world of computer entertainment together."

ken kutaragi in 2005 prior to the launch of the ps3 talking about the xbox 360.

why do people get defensive about all this stuff? he is a developer. how many other developers will tell you that they can only make their games on the platform they are working on when they make exclusive games? its all pr and none of us should take it personal.

spartan112g2681d ago

Lol, remember this video? Pepperidge Farms remembers.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

I wonder if you were as up in arms about being professional and respectful back then.

optimus2681d ago

i remember that. but in case you haven't heard, sony can do no wrong...(when will the "love" end?)

mark_parch2681d ago

Days Gone Director Says Bend's Project Costs Over $250M; Says PS Co-CEO Doesn't Want 2 Zombies Games

Days Gone director claims Sony has already poured in at least a $250M in Bend's project; says Days Gone sold more than Death Stranding.

shinoff218319h ago

Well that sucks. Seems they want more online trash. I'd rather of had the sequel if it was single player

MrNinosan5h ago

What online trash games did PS Studios release last 10 years?

Notellin3h ago

The past has nothing to do with the future. This is such a terrible argument. Everyone knows about their current live service push.

_SilverHawk_2h ago

It's so tragic what happened to days gone. It is such an amazing game but bandwagoners trashed it and it underperformed in it's launch year. Days gone is the best open world zombie game released in the past five years. I was recently playing it on pc and I'm still amazed by it.

Games are very expensive to make and it seems like it's normal for a AAA game to cost over a quarter billion to make so if a quality game like days gone greatly underperforms then people shouldn't be upset when they see a lot of GAAS. I still remember a lot of bandwagoners calling days gone trash but years later it's now amazing when it's considered a failure by sony.

If a game isn't the best thing seen since hats with pockets then a lot of gamers who haven't played it automatically calls it rubbish and whoever made it should be incarcerated

Cacabunga54m ago(Edited 53m ago)

Co CEO prefers gamers to boycott.. so be it. I’ll never buy a gaas.
Just imagine buying a game you cannot replay in some years.. this shit must stop.

Days Gone did zombies in a very original way. The story was also so engaging. You actually only meet Zombie hordes later in the game. There are many more enemy groups to deal with.

-Foxtrot19h ago

It would be a shame if it was true that Hermen never gave the franchise a chance simply because he didn't like it and they already had a "Zombie" game with TLOU.

NaughtyDog are most likely moving onto a new IP next so it would have been the perfect time to do it.

ThinkThink11h ago

Here's where xbox steps in and releases state of decay 3 day and date on ps5.

Grilla4h ago

Days gone 2 was canceled before Herman was in charge. That happened like 4 years ago.

vfl5234h ago

4 years ago he was head of Playstation Studios. He would've probably had a hand in the cancelation.

Notellin3h ago

Man two seconds of research could have saved you from this comment. Amazing work Grilla you fit in with the uniformed N4G community who speaks before verifying anything that they say.

Redemption-642h ago

Maybe encourage people to buy the game at full price and not when it's heavily discounted or go on plus. If this game had sold well when it was full priced a sequel would have been in the works. They made a single-player game that most people didn't support until they dropped the price.

Cacabunga34m ago

The guy’s just a moron.. he should have stayed within game development. His choices will have a terrible impact on the brand in the long run.

excaliburps5h ago

Yep. Kind of weird since it wasn't a sales flop, no?

I know we have to take what Ross says with a grain of salt since we're hearing just one side of the story, but even so, the game wasn't bad at all. Heck, it's my brother's favorite last-gen game from what I recall.

The amount of zombies on screen, imagine that with the PS5 and SSD? That would be insanely fun!

Grilla4h ago

Most copies were sold on sale. Not enough ppl bought it at full price. I paid 20$ for it 6 -7 months after release.

Notellin3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Yeah we should never believe the creators side until we hear the corporate/big business side as history has shown we should always believe billion dollar corporations.

What a bootlicker statement.

P_Bomb5h ago

Well I don’t want 10 live service games, but they have no problem doing that lol. Ugh.

CrimsonWing694h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Oh great so we only get what the big wigs want… y’know, the people that really have their fingers on the pulse of what their consumers want. Faaaaantastic!

rippermcrip2h ago

Well consider they know the sales... they do know what the consumer wants.

It sold shit.
