E3 2018: Microsoft Won E3, Sony Got it Very Wrong

PlayStationing writes: "This might not be the best thing for a PlayStation-focused website to admit to, but it’s the truth. Microsoft won E3 this year and Sony, whilst they did show some good games, got their conference very very wrong. This is why."

I won’t lie about it. MS did better than Sony this year. I think next year will be another victory for MS and Sony will lose next year.

Team_Litt2178d ago

What are you basing the second part of your comment on?

lalalala2178d ago

I'd be interested to know also.

UCForce2178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

I’m maybe crazy here, but i will describe something like this.

PS4 Fanboy No.1 : We lost. We are retreating

PS4 Fanboy No.2 : But we can’t do that. We are still at the league and we can still win this.

PS4 Fanboy No.1 : Not this time. Our competitors have defeat us in smart way. Our tactics are awful and we are way too overconfident ourselves. Like it or not, we lost and they won.

PS4 Fanboy No.2 : But.....

PS4 Fanboy No.1 : No but, that’s an order and we are retreating.

PS4 Fanboy No.2 : “Sigh” Yes,sir. All PS fanboys, we are retreating NOW.

PS4 Fanboy No.2 : Sir, will we come back for this ?

PS4 Fanboy No.1 : I do know not. But this is MS victory and we will let them have it. After all, we can’t win forever. Right now, we going to keep moving and focus what is important. Thing are changing.

lalalala2178d ago

@UCForce - So you think Sony is getting complacent because they are the market leader at the moment? Understandable logic I suppose, but I don't agree, I think things will change, especially if we see them backtrack on the Fortnite block, which I can see happening.

Eonjay2178d ago

Sony won E3 in reality. I am tired of giving Microsoft prizes for trying.

xHeavYx2178d ago

@UCForce
It sounds to me like someone asked you to provide reasoning to your prediction and it's you the one who did the retreating.

bluefox7552178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

@UCForce So, let them think they win because you feel bad for them?
@Eonjay Exactly, why is everyone holding them to such a low standard?

UltraNova2178d ago

Awarding MS the win on presentation/format alone is like awarding a movie the oscar based on its trailer only, before you even see the movie...

Content people, actual content wins not the presentation.

MuddyWaters2178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

You guys are viewing it as who is selling the most or who has the better exclusives. That is not what E3 is about. E3 is a show, a spectacle, one to entertain fans. A show of surprises as well.

Sony decided to get artsy and how they though a 15 minute intermission on a show that lasted maybe all of 70 minutes was a good idea is beyond me. They also failed to go in depth with Death Stranding since Shawn mentioned that was the direction this show was going to take and spent way too much time on Spiderman. A game we already know enough of.

They need to sit down and re-evaluate how many shows they do a year because this E3 came across as a very uninteresting one. I think Sony is spreading itself too thin by doing too many conferences per year.

UCForce2178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

@MuddyWater Death Stranding is Kojima game. Even everyone including Shawn Layden never understand that game. It’s mysterious game and it’s Kojima charm really. Spider-Man is coming out in September and the impression was very positive. Sony is heavily marketing on that game. Well, I do agree that intermission ruined the pacing the game, but Sony showed the reason why people still play PS4 because its exclusive game. I need to take a break from N4G for awhile.

pinkcrocodile752178d ago

I know exclusives for consoles is important but my fella and I sat down and looks at what each of us played this year so far and the list is surprisingconsidering we have the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X in the house.

James PS4 Pro:

StarWars BattleFront 2
Wolfenstein 2
Destiny 2
Knack 2
Detroit Become Human
Far Cry 5

Andrew (Me) Xbox

Assassins Creed Origins
Wolfenstein 2
Forza 7
Sea of Theives
Shadow of War

My point is we tend to play on average more 3rd party games that exclusives. Take State of Decay, yes, granted, a lot of you think it's a shit game. I didn't buy it for me because I don't like Zombie games and japanese games. Where James loves Zombie and Japanese games.

So it got me thinking, if we play like this, how many other do?

I don't know how many copied of God of War sold this year but we know that there are aprox 76 million ps4 owners, i'd be curious to see how many copies of God of War have sold globally. Have Sony sold 76 million + copied of the game?

I think it's be interesting to find out.

On Topic:

I think both companies were close this year, I recon maybe MS have the edge here but the view is subjective

fr0sty2178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

Sony announces a ton of really great looking NEW games, and dives deeper into details on already great looking games we've heard about. Even with all of the new games they showcase, there's still more in the wings waiting to be shown.

Microsoft teases HAlo 12,048,954, Forza Horizons 35 1/2, Crackdown vaporware, Gears of War 66, and announce they bought a game studio that never enjoyed much success in the past...

"Microsoft R winnar!"

bloop2178d ago

What I took from the Sony conference:
In depth gameplay reveals to 3 of my most anticipated games at this moment (TLOU:2 probably my highest anticipated of all time).

What I took from the MS conference:
They pulled out their wallet and threw fat wads of cash at everyone.

JackBNimble2178d ago

Everyone I talk to who watched E3 and don't come to sites like this, say the same thing. They all told me Sony killed it and were very excited with what they saw.

I actually haven't watched any coverage on E3 yet, been very busy.

fiveby92178d ago

How do you win a conference? Meaning they have a better marketing message? I'm not sure what winning it means. Do you really think buying a studio for some future unknown title will translate to sales? All the while Sony will release many games available nowhere else and still have all the 3rd party titles which MS seems to claim as their own. Frankly MS is in quite a bad situation both sales wise and future wise. People buying into a dream. It's amazing how easily fooled some consumers can be.

Prime1572178d ago

Probably the shitty decisions they've been making which remind me of the XBone announcement.

As a Sony fanboy, even I see the shitty decisions they're making.

Babadook72178d ago

PlayStation showed the best games. That wins in my book.

Subzero100x2178d ago

E3 isn't really about winning or losing imo. It's personally for me about if they show stuff I'm excited about and when it's releasing. Lol. That's it.

What do you expect from a internet full of degenerates?

ArchangelMike2178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

I'm not so sure Sony would lose next year, it depends on a lot of factors really.

Firstly, there might be new hardware announcements - either for PSVR 2 or for the PS5; and for MS the next gen xbox (xboxtwo?). There might be a price cuts, in line with the upcoming new generation of consoles. Secondly it also depends very much the what games release this year, and what games are revealed for next year. By next E3 TLOU2,Ghost of Tsushima and Death Stranding might have not even released yet? Microsoft doesn't even seem to have any big name games lined up for 2019, so we can't really know.

Don't forget Nintendo either, they might surprise everyone by 2019.

Kokyu2178d ago

Ps5 and possibly Psvr 2

dirkdady2178d ago

I agree with the sentiment sonys pressed was formatted terribly. They clearly have the games to have "won" it but the format was disjointed. Shawn Layden needs to stop trying to experiment and get back to what's worked in the past

T2X2178d ago

Exactly. You can't expect them to show everything in the pipeline all the time. If they did, people would complain about them showing things far too early. E3 isn't really about winning or losing imo. It's personally for me about if they show stuff I'm excited about and when it's releasing. Lol. That's it.

IamTylerDurden12178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

I don't think Sony "lost" this year.

It's funny how people are judging the presentation style rather than the software shown. I value the company's exclusives at E3 rather than multiplatform trailers that end up being at their own press conferences anyway. We could've seen Fallout at Bethesda's conference and gotten more info, Battlefield at EA, KH3 ect.

Sony said they would focus on four heavy hitters, and they did, and they were spectacular.

Ju2178d ago

Yes, the presentation was arts, but it was done quite well. And at the end, it's content that counts. And Sony focus on their own titles, it's Sony as a publisher not just platform holder. 3rd parties were there plenty from their respective studios. Sony will make a splash with the next platform. Maybe that's why people got disappointed.

rainslacker2178d ago

The only real problem I had with the Sony conference was the way they structured it. If they had done that intermission after every game, then it would have been a major fail. It was teetering on that with just the first one. Other than that, the actual showing was great, but they even glossed over COD and Destiny. While that would normally be OK with me, doing that in favor of some self promotion through scripted interviews and commentary was not what most people want from an E3 conference. There's a reason that 99% of people watching stop watching at the end of a conference....it's because they don't want to hear that stuff.

I don't know what Sony was thinking. The last three years they nailed the format, and had 3 awesome conferences in a row. This conference could have been just as good, if not for the break to move over the thousand or so people they were trying to make an experience for. The problem is though, that they broke the experience for the millions watching live.

@UCForce ugh you sound like one of those tools who still get an erection from the thought of a "console war", existence.

UCForce2178d ago

True. But I know the truth is that you can’t win all the times. Sometimes you have to lose and let others win.

GottaBjimmyb2178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

I think this:
MS won the showmanship award.

Sony had the best games shown with gameplay and most coming very soon. (Death stranding being the most dissapointing IMO)

I am leaning towards agreeing with UCForce about next year though, MS is going to be very strong.

Markusb332178d ago

Agreed he does sound like a teenager arguing at school with the big kids and getting excited over his 2 pubes

Ju2178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

How is MS better prepared for next year? Sony's release is next year. We don't yet know what will come after Ghost of Tsushima, TLoU2, ... Just because you don't show all your cards before the game starts doesn't mean you got no aces. I guess MS like the bluff. I sure believe one of those aces is another HW (iteration) and revealed early 2019.

You're suggestion that the winner should step aside... Well that's just plain unrealistic.

xfiles20992178d ago

I disagree Microsoft had a better overall show as far as mass. But I never judge these shows by every single game they show. It is called Microsoft Showcase for a reason to see what Microsoft has been working on, From what I see they are giving Xbox fans the same recipe Halo Gears Forza Repeat. You would think Xbox guys would be bored of that already. The name of the game is to sell more Consoles Microsoft did very little to convince anyone to buy a Xbox,If they did anything they convinced you to wait for the next one. All Microsoft showed me is what I can play on my PS4. Sony on the Other Hand showed you games with Gameplay and the Games looked much better than what Microsoft is offering. The Message was These are only available here on our Console Sony gives you a reason to own their console. For that reason Alone Sony wins.

yomfweeee2178d ago

Doubtful Sony makes the same mistake next year after the negativity they received on this one. Plus if the PS5 is announced, that is a guaranteed victory (unless MS has hardware too).

hench072178d ago

I agree PS fanboys need to give MS some credit, they did a good job this year far better than Sony.

If you disagree you will end up with more "intermissions" next year

manabyte772178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

Credit for what, more flash and pizazz? I think MS fanboys need to snap out of their trance and give kudos to Sony for showing in depth looks at the amazing looking games you can only play on Playstation.

Vandamme212178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

Lol Microsoft won E3 and yet they still don’t have any big exclusive like PS4. Lol those people let Microsoft full them by showing a bunch of multiplaform games. Sony on the other hand showed 4 big exclusives. Spider-man, ghost of thushima, death stranding, and last of us 2. What did Microsoft show? Oh yeah same shit every year. Gears, Halo and Forza. Come on people...are you serious?

nowitzki20042178d ago

MS won by showing games that are also on PS4.

Aceman182178d ago

I'm sorry but this conference is about the games not some stupid ass format used.

Sony showed 4 exclusives we'll be playing later this year, and next. Each of high quality, MS had a decent showing but again they lacked the variety of new and interesting IPs, if it wasn't for the 3rd party games shown it would have been completely lackluster in my view.

Also if you watch these conferences for format instead of games you need to stop gaming altogether lol.

bluefox7552178d ago

How can you look at the games shown and come to this conclusion? MS wasn't even close.

2178d ago
Sunny_D2178d ago

@ucforce

You might be spending too much time on this website if you’re making up stories LOL

T2X2178d ago

I wouldn't discount Sony at all. Let's see, they've pretty much trounced MS every year and now because they had a relatively slow E3 people think they "Lost" something. Sales don't lie. Sony won this Gen pretty much hands down for gaming bombshells. Next year have you seen that lineup? Imo, MS is too little too late. That's what it seems to me.

manabyte772178d ago

So seeing actual gameplay of true exclusive games for your console of choice takes a back seat to a montage of games that will be available on the other console as well?

pwnmaster30002178d ago

Dude I hope your not taking it to hard man lol. It’s only E3, in reality, Sony still has a really good line up and some of the best games coming out.

Markusb332178d ago

Based on ? Sony selling nearly 80 million units and xbox talking about a new console at e3 2018 but selling only 35 million xbox consoles this gen?

Ju2178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

MS plays the inflation game...announcing new hw before the current has made a dent. Promising another iteration of the same. And people fall for it. Didn't you all just buy a new console? Oh wait...you didn't. X didn't make a dent to the bottom line. And what's even more even a year after release no block buster games at the show; still completely depending on 3rd party games. Amazing they forgot to develop Gears, Halo and Forza while they were building their new HW platform. Those games should they have announce - cooky cutter as they are - should have been playable at the conference, not "engine demos". What's MS been doing all those years?

Baza2178d ago

PS4 total system sales 75 million
Xbox One total system sales 36 million

killswitch802178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

UCForce another is delusional Xbox fanboy. I am a multiplatform gamers before you label me. Xbox had a good show but they didn't show anything great that's not on PS4. With the current trend of exclusives that are not exclusives I expect crackdown 3 to be medicore. PS showed off great exclusives that can not be played on any other systems that will be 9+ games out of 10. Next year Sony will show off more Death Stranding and Ghost plus we will see the new exclusives that they have been working on. Xbox next year hey check out our subscribtion system with games you already played and exclusives that can also be played on PC that are not very good. THe only cool thing about Microsoft conference was that its first so people show off their stuff and all of it can be played on multiple systems...Won not really ….Microsoft wont be a great software system for another 2 -3 years. Yeah they showed off some acquirements but most of those I thought they owned already. Plus zero of those investments will show off anything good for a few years.

2178d ago
Ju2178d ago

Sony showed gameplay (!!!) of all their high profile games. Like hands on game play. Not trailer footage from games you have played years ago.

UCForce2178d ago

Look, i’m PlayStation Loyalist and play game on PS but I have to admit that MS has won this year.

butchertroll2178d ago

Yeah, UCForce. Thank you MS for showing bunch of 3rd party games. That's how you won.

Tsar4ever012178d ago

I disagree. Sony is on 'Cruise Control' to the finish line of the 8th gen. And this conference cements this. They really don't have to prove anything at this point. And plus they didn't even show all the the titles they want to announce, they're saving them for the other shows coming later. So I'll link you this article and qoute you the main point of Sony's conference from that article.

"In a way, this year’s conference is a victory lap; Sony didn’t mouth off, it didn’t take a bow, it didn’t remind us all that it controls almost the entire international console business. It just showed off its games, which are most of the reason why it’s in the position it enjoys in the first place.' ........mic drops.

https://www.geekwire.com/20...

IamTylerDurden12178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

So you think a company wins E3 by showing other people's games? Microsoft showed a great crop of multiplatform games, but their own showings were comparatively weak.

E3 is to show people what you have coming in the future. While it's nice to see multiplatform games like Fallout and DMC it really means very little for Microsoft in the grand scheme of things.

I just don't believe that a company wins E3 by showing other people's multiplats. I believe E3 is primarily "won" by the content of your own games, or your own exclusives. Sony's big 4 games were the class of E3, they wowed the public, and no amount of pageantry can overshadow that. TLoU, Tshushima, and Spiderman were truly awesome gameplay demos and Death Stranding was a fascinating look with gorgeos visuals. Nioh 2 was a big announcement as well. There was a From Soft VR exclusive announced and at the SE show two PS4 console exclusives were shown. But all in all TLoU and Tshushima stole the show.

OB1Biker2178d ago

I've just watched people playing Spider man demos and they were so excited. That s E3.
Now if the press wants to compare the presentations for their entertainment or for their marketing strength, that's fine, and Ms was lovely even for me watching just for the multiplat... but is that E3 or... You know... The pre E3 conference?

Ashunderfire862178d ago

So Last Of Us 2, Spiderman, Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima didn't wow you?

fiveby92178d ago

How did MS do better? Announcing studio acquisitions? A bunch of multiplat titles shown. Nah, MS did nothing special. They've renewed their vows with gamers? We'll believe it when we actually see it with actual games. The MS marketing hype machine is out in full force. Just smoke and mirrors though.

neutralgamer19922178d ago

Won what showed the most 3rd party games and announced the fact they finally understand they need to have studios to compete with Sony and Nintendo

They still showed most must have exclusives. The format of the presentation was wrong but overall what matters are games and they still had the best showing on that front

I am glad yall enjoyed the presentation

To gamers games matter not a promise of future games

DivineAssault 2178d ago

Haha you think 2019 games from MS will be able to outdo games like Ghost of Tsushima, Death Stranding, TLOU2? I dont think so

trooper_2178d ago

Microsoft didn't do crap that was impressive or unheard of. They did better than before but that's about it.

You're giving them too much credit.

Davidgr22178d ago

Microsoft had a “better” show but most of the games they showed are coming to PS4 too. Sony did say in advance they were focusing only in 4 games. Ghost Tsushima and The Last of Us pt 2 look far more impressive than any real exclusive game MS showed..

MADGameR2178d ago

80 Million+ PS4s, 39 Million X Box Ones, end thread. MS lost the race which is the most important victory.

Bathyj2178d ago

Yeah Microsoft had more flash, more pizzazz. Sony's was a bit awkward and I didn't care for the round table discussion at all.

Yet what's everyone talking about now?
Last of us and Ghost or halo and Gears?
What are we all dying to play next, Spiderman or Crackdown?

Sony killed it where it matters. They always do. For all the flash there was not one game in the Microsoft conference that would make someone buy an Xbox if they didn't have one already.

snoopgg2178d ago

What are u smoking, give me some.

rainslacker2178d ago

I think the only thing really wrong with Sony's conference was the "intermission" after the first game. Some trailers should have been longer also, and maybe make room for some more games. Otherwise, there was nothing wrong with the conference after the intermission, and TLOU2 game play trailer was pretty good.

I like MS pacing a lot better, and they showed a lot of games I'm interested in. Overall, a good conference if you aren't looking at it for a reason to buy an XBox, but kind of disappointing if you are looking at it in respect to what the point is in their console this gen, if you happen to have brought it as a secondary console for their exclusives.

ChiefofLoliPolice2178d ago

Yeah of course MS won showing 90% of games that can be played elsewhere. Third party was great at MS E3 but still a major disappoint. No new exclusives IPs or nothing. Even some of the most hardcore xbox fans are getting tired.

b00mFargl32178d ago

Microsoft had a better presentation while Sony had better games. Maybe that's just me.

Ceaser98573612178d ago

Sony was bleak this year with their Presentation and i hope they DONT REPEAT but The games did the talking all AAA 1st party system seller games Cant wait MS had a terrific presentation but 80 percent of those games will come to the PS4 and from 1st party i only like their Gears game and that's it

Artemidorus2178d ago

N4GSONY.com will not allow such comments.

Edito2178d ago

Microsoft won't win nothing with those games period. Sony did what they told they would do if you expected something else. Feel sorry for you.

WilliamSheridan2177d ago

I'm more on the pro MS side of things, but honestly, despite MS having a "better" show, I think Sony showed better games.

Now, Sony showed nothing new, and just showed the same games they have showed before. I think that's what happens when you show them too early like they did. The pacing of the show was really bad, and would have loved something surprising and new.

MS showed a bunch of new games, and kept the pace moving. It was a good mixture of games and announcements. It was a ball that just kept rolling.

Despite all of this, I still think I'm looking forward to the Sony offerings more. MS needs those new IPs and needs a single player cinematic exclusive to rival the MANY that Sony are pumping out.

tontontam02177d ago

Yup MS did a better job,

Sony will return to normal format and spend time showing world premieres of games that is also coming to xbox.

They massively failed they did not expect that people are watching their show to see multiplat games.

Microsoft "Won" E3. So whats the prize?

In any case, I agree that the Sony press conference was terrible, and I hope they don't repeat that format for a conference ever again. The problem is that Sony have PSX which is becoming their primary stage for big announcements, so it makes sense for them to leave some big hitters until then.

lalalala2178d ago

"Microsoft "Won" E3. So whats the prize? "

Positive press.

Rude-ro2178d ago

For what?
The only positive presss has been on the “presentation”.
I did not realize that it was a fashion show.
Now, I do give the format... but they did nothing to change the last 6 years as far as gaming goes...
In fact, they even changed the goal posts again announcing games that are not close to release per Phil’s own words...
You know it’s bad when the presentation is being judged more than the software for each individual console company.

UltraNova2178d ago

Positive press is nothing when all you have to offer is FH4 and crackdown 3 in the forseable future.

Saigon2178d ago

@Rude-ro

I said it in another post that E3 has become a fashion show and we are missing the point of the presentations, which are the GAMES. Just show me the GAMES and I am happy with that...i don't care about pace format or the other crap they judge...just give me the GAMES!

Shiken2178d ago

Well fact of the matter is, MS only showed me games that I will be playing on my PS4. So is that really a win?

Meanwhile, while the presentation was lacking, what Sony did show in terms of exclusivity was real next level stuff. In a way, MS was just Sony conference part one for anyone who is not an X1 only gamer.

Crackdown has been talked about since the X1's conception.

Halo was a teaser trailer with no gameplay.

Forza H4 will be good. I might dust off my X1 for that.

And Gears of Social Justice 5 changes the entire atmosphere that the franchise was based off of by doing away with the whole "bromance" scene. Some may want this game, but I will give it a hard pass.

darthv722178d ago

@rude... it's ALWAYS been a fashion show. where have you been?

The games are the models walking out on stage and twirling about to let people take pics and write up segments about what they've seen. Just replace Calvin Klein and Giorgio Armani with Microsoft and Sony and you get the idea.

Agreed. I hope Sony never focuses on their exclusives again. /s

IamTylerDurden12178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

Sony just favored a concise show with only important games getting stage time while Microsoft stuffed their's with anything and everything.

Microsoft showed commercials for Sea of Thieves, Cuphead, and Pubg.

They gave several questionable games significant stage time. Tales of Vesperia Remastered, Tunic, Gears mobile, and The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. Even Black Desert was a fairly questionable showing. It's a free 2 play MMO in many regions, i believe it costs $9.99 in north America and it has a 73 Metacritic.

fiveby92178d ago

Although I didn't care for the format Sony employed, I'd say MS clearly had more substance while still not playing all their cards. MS had no choice but to make lots of promises. WIll MS deliver? Heh, I have my doubts.

Kokyu2178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

This has to be satire. I dont see how you win when you annouce buying 4 studios, show the same franchises and sequals everyone knew you would talk about, show some third party trailers then annouce your working on new hardware when you just re released ypur platform 8 months ago.....Im baffled how they won.

Skankinruby2178d ago

They didn't, this is just straw grasping journalists trying to get attention.

spicelicka2178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

I think what people are alluding to is the E3 presentation and format, not the exclusives and how they look per se. What you're saying is a different thing, everyone knows PS4 has more games and they all look amazing. I'm not going to make an argument one way or another, but i know a lot of people weren't satisfied with the way Sony presented at E3.

If you actually read the article the author clearly says Sony had better games to show, but for the people in attendance it was shitty because of the seating, intermission, and the way it was all structured.

yeahright22178d ago

They won in my mind. Now basing it just on games, they're close to dead last as I don't really count multiplats at a showing for the big 3. (it's basically "hey checkout this game you can buy on your playstation, doesn't it make you want to buy an xbox to play it?")
But presentation and future planning is key. Now I have concerns with all of these, but: Having those multiplats did nothing to convince me to buy an xbox, but it did send the message that third parties have no intention of abandoning xbox. As with the new studios sending the message that they're planning on making more games and expanding their catalog. And the context of all the pro consumer moves they made in the past couple years has me hopeful.
Now I'm worried that what they showed was just halo/gears/forza sure. but honestly I think that was the right move. No one is going to rush out to buy xbox at this point. It's smart to ride this gen out and keep current customes happy until your comeback next gen. hence halo/gears/forza make sense.
The new studios all depend on how MS handles them. Playground making a new open world game rather than becoming the next coalition (ie just a forza factory) is a good sign. But with MS, as always, I'll wait on actual results.
But in the end, the reason they won to me was that they did the impossible. They have me considering a purchase of the next xbox. I thought I was totally done with xbox, but if they make the right moves, things like not turning ninja theory into a multiplayer, microtransaction filled, Gaas only studio, I'll buy an xbox.
But this is MS, they don't have best track record with follow through when it comes to E3 promises. That's usually the rub. but based soley on what I saw, yeah, MS won. A lot because of making smart moves and a lot because Sony had awesome substance but horrible presentation that sucked the life out of their show and Nintendo forgetting that smash isn't the onlt game in the world.

"I dont see how you win when you annouce buying 4 studios, show the same franchises and sequals everyone knew you would talk about, show some third party trailers then annouce your working on new hardware when you just re released ypur platform 8 months ago....."

Well, those are studio/hardware announcements and third party trailers sony didn't have, also sony's conference was stupid. So xbox won e3 2018.

Tazzy2178d ago

I agree chatter at e3 gets people talking about what was shown and if this is the case clearly Sony won followed by Nintendo but I would have thought Microsoft would be 2nd.

https://mynintendonews.com/...

OB1Biker2178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

I agree but the nonsense has been going on for years. Even gamers are guilty of it. I mean, look in the past Sony show a live steam just before their conference with very good stuff in it and then you read comments/articles like 'why didn't Sony put this trailer or that announcement in the conference?'. The trailer was like ten minute before so 'it doesn't count'.
Its come to the point the press completely ignore the E3 EVENT itself and just focus on the pacing of the pre E3 conference.

Gunstar752178d ago

As a GAMER they won. They showed some amazing games.

As a fanboy.... I dunno.... Tell us?

bigmalky2178d ago

Not satire... Clickbait. Surely everyone that joins gaming sites know the score by now?

Rage clicks = Money.

Don't click.

The "authors" name of the garbage piece is LALALALA....i guess that we can assume that that is what's going on in this persons brain....no proper thoughts or brain activity

Akarogg 2178d ago

Sony didn't even show Dreams at the main event, which was really disapointing for me

Akarogg 2178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

You mean the non explanatory snippets in between the other games which only people already interested in Dreams would understand was Dreams? That's beyond weak

angelsx2178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

How they won with all multiplatform games and gears and Forza as usual? Another stupid article.

yellowgerbil2178d ago

because its a "presentation" PRESENTATION matters.

Bhuahahaha2178d ago

uhh where is the presentation slot for the xbox?
im dying to play presentation on it

Destiny10802178d ago (Edited 2178d ago )

They just showed a bunch of trailers

"because its a "presentation" PRESENTATION matters"

Ubisoft had a great presentation with music and Shigeru Miyamoto and some great trailers but Microsoft conference to me was just boring, trailer after trailer, I didn't even see anything I liked

Days Gone Director Says Bend's Project Costs Over $250M; Says PS Co-CEO Doesn't Want 2 Zombies Games

Days Gone director claims Sony has already poured in at least a $250M in Bend's project; says Days Gone sold more than Death Stranding.

shinoff218316h ago

Well that sucks. Seems they want more online trash. I'd rather of had the sequel if it was single player

MrNinosan2h ago

What online trash games did PS Studios release last 10 years?

Notellin16m ago

The past has nothing to do with the future. This is such a terrible argument. Everyone knows about their current live service push.

-Foxtrot16h ago

It would be a shame if it was true that Hermen never gave the franchise a chance simply because he didn't like it and they already had a "Zombie" game with TLOU.

NaughtyDog are most likely moving onto a new IP next so it would have been the perfect time to do it.

ThinkThink8h ago

Here's where xbox steps in and releases state of decay 3 day and date on ps5.

Grilla1h ago

Days gone 2 was canceled before Herman was in charge. That happened like 4 years ago.

vfl5231h ago

4 years ago he was head of Playstation Studios. He would've probably had a hand in the cancelation.

Notellin14m ago

Man two seconds of research could have saved you from this comment. Amazing work Grilla you fit in with the uniformed N4G community who speaks before verifying anything that they say.

excaliburps2h ago

Yep. Kind of weird since it wasn't a sales flop, no?

I know we have to take what Ross says with a grain of salt since we're hearing just one side of the story, but even so, the game wasn't bad at all. Heck, it's my brother's favorite last-gen game from what I recall.

The amount of zombies on screen, imagine that with the PS5 and SSD? That would be insanely fun!

Grilla1h ago

Most copies were sold on sale. Not enough ppl bought it at full price. I paid 20$ for it 6 -7 months after release.

Notellin12m ago(Edited 11m ago)

Yeah we should never believe the creators side until we hear the corporate/big business side as history has shown we should always believe billion dollar corporations.

What a bootlicker statement.

P_Bomb2h ago

Well I don’t want 10 live service games, but they have no problem doing that lol. Ugh.

CrimsonWing691h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Oh great so we only get what the big wigs want… y’know, the people that really have their fingers on the pulse of what their consumers want. Faaaaantastic!

Former Activision studio Toys for Bob partners with Xbox to publish its first game as an indie

Former Activision studio Toys for Bob partners with Xbox to publish its first game as an indie. This is something of a homecoming, as Microsoft owns Activision.

Very very early in development. Still, fantastic news!

Let´s GO!!!

Lightning7713h ago

I guess.

How come they didnt either let them go or sell Tango and others to another publisher? Not saying Ubisoft, EA would be any better. (Capcome would of treated them right )

At least it wouldn't be MS of all ppl destroying them.

MS really should let go Tango go like they did TFB here.

darthv7212h ago(Edited 12h ago)

one was under Bethesda (Tango) the other under Activision (TFB). Clearly each one handled the separations of their subordinates differently.

Obscure_Observer12h ago(Edited 12h ago)

"How come they didnt either let them go or sell Tango and others to another publisher? Not saying Ubisoft, EA would be any better. (Capcome would of treated them right )"

Perhaps because Zenimax and ABK handles such matters differently based on their own internal policies as "independent" publishers.

Whoever, chances are it´s simply because MS didn´t wanted Tango or Austin to be acquired by competitors and develop new bangers for them, giving MS a bad rep in a possible future. Which could also be the reason why they ensured an exclusive partnership with TFB and its new game, before anyone else.

Sad and disgusting. But it is what it is.

Lightning778h ago(Edited 8h ago)

"Whoever, chances are it´s simply because MS didn´t wanted Tango or Austin to be acquired by competitors and develop new bangers for them, giving MS a bad rep in a possible future."

MS has a bad rep now because those studios are no more. I rather them sell the studio continue to make multiplatform releases, while MS continues to focus on whatever they're doing. If they didn't want Tango around they should separated from them or sell them to, like they did TFB.

It's inexcusable, they have options on how to handle studios they don't want anymore with killing jobs. Not just MS but the rest of the industry also.

Sad and disgusting sure how many will get shut down next year or this year even?

I don't trust MS decisions and motivations at this point. You have to admit they make one dumb move after another.

Obscure_Observer1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Imo, MS separated from TFB because they didn´t had a game associated with Xbox yet, unlike Tango.

"I don't trust MS decisions and motivations at this point. You have to admit they make one dumb move after another."

Fair enough. It was indeed an epic dumb move from them to close Tango.

Still, all to be forgotten, like always have. This is not the first time a big publisher shuts down a beloved and/or successful studio out of nowhere and certainly won´t be the last. Do you remember Lionhead? Do you remember Evolution Studios? Yeah... both were beloved studios and yet, those companies kill those studios in q blink of an eye and got away with it.

-Foxtrot14h ago

Manages to buy their freedom especially after all the shit Microsoft has been doing with its studios lately

...

Goes right back to them as partners.

Okaaaaaay...

darthv7212h ago

Id venture a guess that TFB working directly with MS was a better outcome than working through Activision to get to MS.

VersusDMC10h ago

From the article...

"Toys for Bob spun out as an indie back in February after Microsoft instituted sweeping layoffs that impacted 86 employees, which was more than half of the staff"

I doubt those 86 employees enjoyed the Microsoft experience over Activisions.

Inverno10h ago

MS shuts down studios because of lack of resources and then helps these guys by giving em resources. Also MS is what forced them to buy their freedom in the first place? What kind of logic 😂

Chevalier7h ago

The best thing is that the company that is worth $3 trillion and owns the company instead of Xbox lacks resources. How the hell does a company worth $3 trillion making a measly $70 billion purchase they 'can't' support. Lol

Sciurus_vulgaris12h ago(Edited 12h ago)

Xbox’s gaming division seems to still function as 3 semi-autonomous sub-divisions, Xbox Studios, Bethesda and ABK. The three main sub-divisions can seemingly shut down or build studios and set up partnerships independently. This would explain why Bethesda can recently shutdown studios, while ABK spins off one studio, while building a new one. Plus, Toys for Bob could be spun off by ABK, only to immediately re-partner with Microsoft.

Chevalier7h ago

That's absolutely 💯 BS. Any sane 'autonomous' company would NOT put their games on Gamepass day 1 like COD will lose probably billions.

Also they're all under Xbox game studios so any autonomy is an illusion.

Elda7h ago

Either a kiddie game or something uninteresting.

Obscure_Observer1h ago

Don´t worry. You won´t be playing it anyway since their next game will possible be a next gen Xbox console game.

Sony shares big new PS Plus stat, but not the one we want to see

PlayStation Plus has improved the split of PS4 and PS5 players on its priciest tiers, but Sony continues to hide total subscriber numbers.

theloadout.com
mandf18h ago

lol acting like it’s equivalent to ms numbers

Mr Logic18h ago

Uh...They're definitely not equivalent.

"Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass service now has 34 million subscribers."

"the total number of PS Plus subscribers across all tiers was 47.4 million"

darthv7217h ago(Edited 17h ago)

That PSN number seems like it should be much higher... especially when you consider that PS4 alone has a sell through of over 117m. To not even be at least half that is rather interesting.

To the XB side, having 34m to an install base of roughly 50m (XBO sell through) or even 85m (360 sell through) is a greater percentage of unit to member ratio than PSN.

bloop14h ago

That's not the "gotcha" you think it is Darth.

darthv7213h ago

fr0sty5h ago

MS started lumping gold subscribers in with those GP numbers... keep in mind.

shinoff218316h ago(Edited 16h ago)

What. Definitely more os plus subscribers but that makes sense due to actual console sales

Darth the difference between the bases are huge your right but you gotta think. Ps players buy more games, where as the Xbox base relies on gamepass for their gaming. So it makes perfect sense

darthv7216h ago(Edited 16h ago)

What makes perfect sense though? You say PS players buy more games... so then logically there should be more PS+ subscribers given the increased number of online multiplayer games in the PS4 generation alone. The PS4 was the first time that + was required for online play much like Gold was for 360 users.

Keep in mind we are talking subscribers, not simply XB/PS users. I assume you meant to say offline single player games, which is most likely true as well. That gen also saw a significant increase in games with an online component comparted to the previous gen.

victorMaje16h ago

I for one will be going back to essential at the next renewal. When I feel a game is good & right up my alley, I’ll check trusted reviews & just buy it.

jznrpg14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

I have the top tier until 2028 as they gave me a massive discount for all the years I had left but I’ll most likely go to essential as well. I buy my games but my kids do use the service occasionally. They do prefer to own their games as well since any game can leave the rental service at some point and they don’t like that idea. They mostly use it to demo games then ask me to buy games if they really like it.

RedDevils10h ago

For me, I will cancel it all together but unfortunately I still have it till 2030 lol

meganick14h ago

I would like to see Sony add a fourth tier of PS Plus for people who just want to be able to play games online without any of the perks like monthly games, store discounts, or anything like that, and it should cost $20 annually, $30 maximum. There’s no way I’m paying $80 just to play games online. Even the original $60 fee was too much, and I would often wait for sales to re-up my subscription.

P_Bomb10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

Essential is too expensive, I agree. We’ve got one Essential and one Premium sub. Dropping the Premium when it expires.

gamerz7h ago

Just let my subscription lapse for the first time since 2010. Will sub again every now and then for a month or so to access my old ps+ games but for me it's the end of an era.

DivineHand1256h ago

Let those numbers continue to drop because it is now too expensive. $80 per year just to play online. I noticed they didn't offer any discounts on the subscription or controllers during this year's days of play for the first time in many years and they will feel it when people choose not to renew.

My subscription will lapse next month and it will stay that way until further notice.

KevtheDuff3h ago

There were savings on subs and controllers here in the UK? I bought a controller yesterday in the sale..
It would be weird if those deals were not in other territories too?
