After the lack of new announcements at E3 2018, the abysmal press conference presentation, and the Fortnite account debacle, Sony seems to be in hot water as of late. Are they getting cocky? Game Savvy discusses.

What? Nintendo would benefit from sharing customers with competitors' larger online customer bases. Sony would not benefit from sharing customers with competitors' smaller customer bases.

Say I run a barbershop and have 100 clients. One of my competitors has 30 clients and another 20. My competitors are pressuring me to participate in a rewards program that would pool our customers and offer them incentives for patronizing any of our shops. There is no revenue sharing agreement, so whichever of the three shops a customer visits keeps all of the revenue from that customer. I also find out the shop with 30 clients won't be pooling all 30 of their clients (in the same way MS' Live Gold paywall means they're only contributing their Gold members). That benefits my competitors, not me.

The lackadaisical nature of fixing CC PS3 Hack, telling people to get another job is the pinnacle of being Cocky.
Cross Play I understand, but that is not the issue with Fortnite.
The issue with Fortnite is Sony locking your progression to Sony.
I get it that Sony want's to make money on MT's absolutely, as they should.
It would be fine if MT's that were bought on Sony only worked on PS4/PC as long as progression was not tied.
And that is where people have the issue not cross play.
And before you even say it I am a PS4 only not playing Fortnite user.

Yes they where cocky round the launch of the PS3. They thought the PS2 was a succes so the PS3 will also be a succes, even when it was expensive at launch.
So that backfired in the first years of the PS3, but first eating the humble pie and than the dedication of delevering AAA exclusive games only playable on Playstation saved theyr ass.

3 years of a currently 4-1/2 year generation? and of course, the 1-1/2 year of decent to really good games before that. A couple misses in there for sure, but Sony still had more first party output in the first year and a half than they've ever had in the past.

Why is it always said that Sony didn't have any good games in the first year and a half? I:SS and First light were good, although not as good as the predecessors. DriveClub was really good except for the launch problems which didn't last that long, and really didn't affect the SP. Knack was decent enough for a launch title, although nothing to write home about. Of course Bloodborne...although that was 2nd party. LBP3 was OK.

Why is there always this narrative that Sony somehow sucks the first year or two? They may not have the same output as later, but they still had plenty of good games.

You're right that the truth is sometimes hard to accept. But what's easy to reject is the complete hyperbole based off subjective notions that Sony had no good games. That's just something that people like to use until they realize that it's not working to use that argument anymore. For a Sony first year, they did better than ever before, and really, better than most consoles in the history of console launches.

Ok you won the sales numbers this gen, but that isn't a guarantee going into next gen, and they could very well be damaging their rep for next gen.

They won't have the lead against Xbox next gen they has this gen, as Microsoft isn't going to make the same mistake twice and will have a very powerful machine to rival the PS5.

Next gen will be interesting when they both re-start again on an even playing field.

E3 - The did tell us a month ahead there was only going to be 4 big games shown, the intermission crap is what people need to focus on but in terms of content they did tell us it wouldn't be the same kind of show like other E3's. I don't know what else to say really.

Fortnite - Like I've said we don't know what really goes on behind closed doors and don't know the full situation. Do Sony need to work on a compromise for these features? Of course. Do we really need it to the point where it's killing them slowly as each day passes? Not really.

The biggest complaint about fortnite is that if you bought the content on pc and play on pc then tried the game on ps4 that content you purchased on pc is locked to ps4, you then cant play on switch or xbox with content you purchased on pc. If you buy content on pc then play on xbox and then get a switch your content moves with you regardless of platform. Only with ps4 is the content locked even though it was originally bought on pc. I dont really care either way about fortnite as I dont play it but I can understand why people are annoyed if they spent the cash on pc

That's understandable, but the anger has been rolled up in this MS inspired campaign to attack Sony on cross-play when that energy would be better spent questioning Epic. Epic knew the terms. They knew Sony didn't approve cross-play between consoles. They knew that and knew there were certain conditions they had to meet if they wanted to do business on PS to respect Sony's position. The implementation of what they were promising was all on them; it was their responsibility to inform the customers. I still don't see why Epic can't just do a one time free of charge gift of locked content to the new accounts of anyone with a verified PS4 linked account. But I also don't see many people asking that question amid the furor to bash Sony.

I don't know if it can be sorted out easily. Content on PSN is controlled pretty heavily by Sony. The only instances I know of where you can buy content off of PSN and use it on PSN is for games like FFXIV, where those agreements were made ahead of release of the game.

Epic probably can sort it out, but I still don't think cross buy with extra content is going to happen based on the standard compliance standards that exist for Sony.

They showed a closer look at 4 games all coming to The system... Actually... 6 there were 6 major AAA PS4 exclusives from Sony's first party. Dreams, Days Gone, LOU2, Spider-Man, Ghost and Death Stranding.... Dreams was featured during every transition, Days Gone was on the show floor and got a release date, and the latter 4 were deep dives, something they came out and said would be the main focus of their conference...

The pacing was the downer to an otherwise spot on conference.

TLoU2, Ghost of Tsushima and Spider-man all showed us why Sony is so far ahead of the competition.

As for the conference, which wasn't a conference, I just wish they showed gameplay for more other titles announced at previous E3. Well, being cocky can affect every companies. I’m not going to say what if. I’m going to say when. When MS and Nintendo are getting cocky again and you are going to get backstabbed by them again. When MS and Nintendo make anti consumer practices again, would you boycott them or ignore them completely ? The thing is that it will happen again and again. The only way Sony could lock an Epic account is if the player, Epic, or both gave them the authority to do it as a condition of linking the account on PS4. Assuming that they did (because it is just an assumption at this point), here's why they would want to do that, and it has nothing to do with being cocky.

Sony, MS, and Nintendo all make money off of third party licensing agreements that require game publishers to pay them royalties on games and content sold on their platform, sometimes selling consoles at a loss just to get gamers buying in their ecosystem, profitting on the back end on the sale of licensed content.

Fortnite being free to play means the profits for that game come from selling add on content.

This is where PS4's dominance puts them in a different position from MS and Nintendo and makes facilitating the ability to use one Fortnite account across competing console platforms an unsound business practice.

Sharing Epic accounts across consoles is really about sharing customers. A PS gamer could be introduced to the game on PS4 and migrate over to Xbox or Switch, with those console manufacturers profiting from any add on sales made on their platforms.

The same is true vice-versa, but because PS4 would be offering a much larger customer base than MS and Ninty in such an arrangement, they would be more likely to lose a sale to one of their direct console competitors than to gain one.

This is aggravated by the fact that Switch has a fledgling online community and Xbox locks free to play games behind the Xbox Live Gold subscription paywall, meaning they would be contributing less of their own customers while Sony would be offering every PSN user (paid or unpaid) playing Fortnite. In fact, MS would directly benefit from their anti-consumer position of locking Live behind a paywall by not having to share all of their Live customers with their competitors.

I don't see how Sony could justify to their shareholders engaging in such an unsound and one sided practice, which benefits their competitors by propping up their smaller online communities and feeding them customers.

There's no doubt that the year head start, and Sony's high starting price had a significant impact on market share last gen. Wii still beat both of them, but it's kind of a odd ball in the console race since it made a new audience for home console gamers, and didn't compete as directly outside the hardcore. Switch is in that space now, although they aren't really creating a new audience in the same way, just bringing it's portable audience into the home console space....which is fine for them IMO, as it doesn't split their resources over a home console which can have an unpredictable user base for Nintendo.

Many Sony fans seem to expect games more than anything else. Sony is doing pretty well on that front, so for them, Sony isn't being anti-consumer, and the customer is getting what they want.

Some people may want other features. But they aren't getting them, and those same people aren't conflating the lack of an unpromised feature as anti-consumer. It's really not...at least in practice. It could be an anti-consumer principal, but any reasonable person would know that sometimes in the consumer and business relationship, there are give and takes and that you can't always get everything you want. Sometimes, those lines are obfuscated purposefully by a company, which can make such things into an anti-consumer practice, but that isn't the case here. Or at least, there isn't enough evidence to support that this is being done from an anti-consumer standpoint.....just some people....usually those with a history of hating on Sony religiously....speculating that Sony is against their customers interest.

Now, there may very well indeed be Sony fans who are upset, or at least want to take the contrary of popular opinion on this subject, but when the opposing console's fan boys come in and constantly fan the flames and exaggerate issues into things they really aren't, those voices get lost in the crowd, and the defensive walls go up so those seeking reasonable discourse now are not taken seriously either.

On top of that, some of the examples being used to show Sony being cocky are purely subjective. Such as the quality of their games showing at E3. Some say it was bad. Others say it was fine. Most agree the intermission completely sucked, but those excited by the games got over it pretty quick. The fortnite things is kind of obfuscated because it's not clear who's really to blame. Sony showing the same games again seems like a stupid reason to use either way, because they were pretty up front about it, and realistically, I have never seen a company be accused of being cocky because they show the same games repeatedly. If that were the case, then MS is being cocky too, because they've made a habit of showing many of the same games repeatedly....but in their case, they weren't near as impressive showings.

They had a $500 option as well. MS had a $500 option as well(although think it was dropped to $400 around the PS3 launch). You got a lot more tech out of the PS3 though...although some of that added value may not have been that important to some people. Only difference between the $500 and $600 SKU's was the size of the hard drive.

That isn't really pricing itself out of the market. I fail to see how the difference between $400 and $500 is pricing itself out of a market. MS didn't price itself out of the market this gen by doing the same thing with the X1 did it? The reason it didn't go over well for MS was because they had lesser tech, and unwanted tech, for that $500 price tag. I also don't understand how $500-600 is pricing itself out of the market when the PS3 was sold out almost continuously for the first year. That means demand....although much of that was due to not being able to make enough....but still, the market existed, and Sony didn't sell poorly out of the gate at all.

The only console I can ever recall actually pricing itself out of the market was the 3DO, excluding some peripheral add-ons like the TG-CD. Any other system with a high price was usually close to what the market was for the time, within $100 or so, it just didn't do well because there was no demand, and lack of demand was usually due to poor marketing or poor games.

There's this notion that only kids play games, or buy systems. It still pervasive even within our own community. But the reality is is that most gamers are mid 20-30's, with the average age going up each year. Those people have money. Many have disposable income. $400-500 isn't that much to many. Obviously, less is better,but more often than not, you get what you pay for....which is why the games are so important, because they can make a system that may not be as appealing tech wise, become a must have purchase.

People seem to forget that Playstation is firstly a business and they have a duty towards share holders and not just customers. There are 80 Million people playing online games so this need to have to x play with other console is just unnecessary given we can already x play with PC and iOS.

As far as I'm concerned, the PlayStation platform has been the gold standard for 4 straight generations in providing content both in terms of quality and quantity and honestly, PS4 has been my favorite generation of all of them! If this is Sony being "cocky" then I'll gladly take it! Sony, keep doing what you're doing!

I don't think so, I think it looks that way. I honestly think they're so surprised/shocked by the success of PS4, they're afraid to deviate from the current path they're currently on. They don't know what made the PS4 such a hit, which makes them afraid of making any moves that could disrupt that success. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" kind of mentality, which if unchecked could lead to stagnation... that's where Xbox/Nintendo come in, it's up to them to compete and keep Sony on their toes!

If they are, it’s not affecting the Playstation community in a negative way. They’re on top of their exclusives game more so than ever, with some seriously amazing looking titles in the pipeline. This crossplay thing is only problematic for multi-console owners that want to have stats carry over to a competitors console. These issues do not exist between PS4 and PC, and it’s not Sony’s job to appease users that want to play on other systems; it’s their job to look after PlayStation. Feel free to call it cocky.

Say you are playing an online multi-player game and you have 20 players in your session.

Does it matter if 10 of those players are from PC or from Xbox? The 20 players are still there regardless from where they come. Does players from another console receive special powers for playing cross play?

For me it makes no difference from where the players are gaming so I don't need crossplay as I am still going to play with a bunch of people.

This crying movement trying to hurt Sony is just gamers from other consoles begging to have the big player base that Sony has. Playstation gamers are not asking for this.

Sony is just being careful and measured.
Microsoft is milking and pushing the PR value of this because Xbox is behind. Without US sales, the Xbox only has a 25% market share. However they have Xbox Live across Windows/Xbox and that makes loads of money.
