Star Citizen’s Single Player Squadron 42 Will Enter Beta in Q2 2020

Today Cloud Imperium Games released a public roadmap for the single player version of Star Citizen, Squadron 42, also announcing some financial info.

Ambitious games can take a long time to make. If the Single Player portion of Star Citizen releases on track it will have taken just as long as RDR2 did.

Red dead also didn't use crowd funding to develop the game.

And Naughty Dog has released 5 games in that time including 2 consensus GotYs. By the time the beta hit they will have released a minimum 6 games with possibly 3 GotYs while the Star Citizen dev will have released a beta..

6 games and 2-3 GotYs vs a beta. Think about that.

I dont want it to, but I know it will.
Even the devs must be bored if it by now. Spending this many years of your life on one game that isnt even in beta yet must be painful and demoralising, especially if you're one of the junior devs.

Have you heard of a game called Red Dead Redemption 2?
That was an 8 year development cycle from a fully staffed studio using mature pipelines, tools, and workflows.
Get a grip.

If you are junior dev this is probably amazing, look at all the people they get to work with and the experience they are getting. As a consumer the final product is all that matters, but as a developer the journey is the most fulfilling part. Although, yes its nice to be proud of the final product as well.

If it took Rockstar 8 years to announce there was a beta coming in 2 more years, I would be equally amused.
Not having a beta after all these years tells you what you need to know about the quality of the pipelines, tools and workflows.

Personally I would agree, but observing people in creative industries, I've seen morale decrease significantly when projects run for years with no end in sight. Most people just don't care the same way after years have passed, as they did in the first few years. tbh this probably applies to other industries as well, but creative people are more likely to throw in the towel first.

Great games have been made with less time. Worse games have taken longer.

Don't forget that Too Human and Duke Nukem Forever happened, though the latter saw a change of hands.

The money is from someone who has an advertising company, and now a 10% investment in CIG. This now effectively means that they have an "in house" advertising company that shares the goal of CIG. With 10% they will at most be observing/suggesting things at meetings and backer money does not need to go to advertising. They did the same thing with Ortwin Freyermuth who has been knocking lawsuits out the park for them.

But as usual all of Derek Smarts lot have been blowing fantasies of failure out there backsides. "Hurr Durr 90 days tops!"
