The ps5 will have a powerful hardware and I cant wait to buy it on release day

Jin_Sakai1832d ago (Edited 1832d ago )

The GPU gains in Navi are 1.25x compared to Vega. So 10TF Navi GPU would equal 12.5TF Vega.

3rd gen Ryzen CPUs are a massive increase over Jaguar. The jump in performance will be incredible over what we have today.

New RDNA architecture! Goodbye GCN.

Custom SSD will eliminate long loads and help with LOD streaming. This will be very good for open world and fast paced games.

I think we can safely say that next gen is going to be amazing. Can’t wait!

DarXyde1832d ago

Sure hope so.

Honestly, I suspect this generation coming will mark the end of traditional gaming.

The 10th Rider1832d ago

IDK, with the rumored Navi pricing I could see a 10TF console. A lot of that would be eaten up in the push for 4K and the jump seems less impressive since we've had the mid-gen refreshes.

That CPU jump is going to be insane though. Couple that with the custom storage set-up for lightning quick load-times and a nice jump in RAM and next gen should be mighty impressive.

bmf73641831d ago

GCN over time has been a curse on AMD. While the 7000 and 200 series beat out Nvidia in price to performance, Nvidias marketing was simply too much. After that, power efficiency dramatically increased for Nvidia while GCN was horribly inefficient by comparison.

The 10th Rider1831d ago

I'd be curious to see why people think we'll be getting a 10+ TF GPU. The GPU that AMD claims to be 10% better than the 8 TF 2070 is rumored to be $500. If that the case I just don't see how next gen consoles could have over 10 TF unless they launch a premium model right out the gate for $600. More realistically we should get 8-10 TF.

The 10th Rider1831d ago (Edited 1831d ago )

@tekiz,

Ummm, a spokesperson for Sapphire, who makes GPUs, let it slip.

https://www.wccftech.com/am...

They were right in the money with performance and the dates, so there's a good chance the price is real too. The original article about it got taken down but there's secondhand articles reporting in the information. It's also not a tumor or a leak with anonymous sources. It's information leaked by a spokesperson for a company that makes the GPU.

cd11831d ago

@10th

Sapphire dont make GPUs, they make graphics cards - the GPUs are fabbed by TSMC, GF etc

@DarXyde,

They have been saying that for the last 2 generations and I am still waiting for this 'end of traditional gaming'. Grant it, traditional gaming has changed, but what the media is referring to is something completely different. They want us to go into the aspects of Mobile Gaming; I honestly do not want that. I am happy with how things are now. I know it will change but my hope is that we keep some aspects of traditional gaming like buying the software in digital or physical.

OT...this was a good read and I can't wait to hear more in the next few weeks. I wonder how custom the PS5 architecture is thouugh and I wonder what customization MS has done to the next Xbox.

crazyCoconuts1831d ago

I think VR has a bigger chance of ending traditional gaming (long term) than mobile devices. Gotta have BIG screens :-)
Regarding MS and customization, I'm just guessing, but I still feel they may stagger a year after PS with their powerhouse console, so they might not have focused on the AMD customizations yet. That way they can guarantee power superiority and continue the "most powerful console" marketing even a year before it's released. I think the X coming out a year later than the pro + the focus on X cloud this year and next is kinda playing into that...

DarXyde1831d ago (Edited 1831d ago )

I'm not concerned with what others have said in the past. I have not made that statement in the past, but I think it is fair to say now. There is increasing cost and a very clear and aggressive push for streaming and online services now that is difficult to ignore.

I have not felt that pressure before, but now it really seems like Gen 9 will be the last traditional consoles. If we don't go full streaming yet, expect a lot of games to be strictly digital going forward.

gravedigger1831d ago

Yep, next-gen gonna be sweet.

It does sound great. I'm liking the choices they're making. I was planning to get one either way, but the hardware and backwards compatibility are adding up to an exciting console.

Ooo that's nice. Some rumors were saying that it would use GCN but it's nice to see that it's new tech.

Asuka1832d ago (Edited 1832d ago )

AMD is finally retiring GCN. That is great news in itself. Though RDNA has yet to be tested in real world It is nice to know it's new architecture.

UltraNova1832d ago

Surely they didn't replace the old gen architecture with a worse one right?

RabbitFly1832d ago

Well that does actually happen all the time, but AMD probably deserves the benefit of the doubt.

nucky641831d ago

maybe not "tested in real world" - but, i imagine whatever sony uses will have gone under a lot of scrutiny before going into ps5 - they're on top but still can't afford a major misstep.

StormLegend1832d ago (Edited 1832d ago )

This sounds amazingly good! I also hope they allow us to download update files on games before they release, that would benefit day 1 physical game buyers a lot. And lastly having every graphical option a PC does would be sweet.

KwietStorm_BLM1831d ago

What the hell with the disagrees?

Rimeskeem1831d ago

Trolls, be on the look out

agnosticgamer1831d ago

PC's are generally always ahead of consoles... So Consoles will pretty much never have all graphical options a PC has. Right at the launch Consoles are usually on par with gaming computers, but that doesn't last for long there are always better graphics cards being released PC gamers can upgrade with that Console gamers cannot.

Disagree's are probably keeping reality in-line with dreams.

MajorLazer1831d ago

PC games are also made for a broad range of setups, some very powerful, some mediocre. Whereas consoles already know what hardware is going to be used so performance is maximised. GoW, tLoU 2, Spiderman were made for a console that's 1.84TF yet they look absolutely stunning

KwietStorm_BLM1831d ago

But what does being ahead of consoles have to do with giving console gamers a broader list of settings? How does a PC stop it from being offered on a game console? They already got the ball rolling with PS4 Pro and Xbox One X allowing performance options. Why would deeper settings be a "dream" on PS5?

Kornholic1831d ago

I'm a physical buyer and 99% of the game day one patches take less than 30 min to download with my internet connection.

MajorLazer1831d ago

Not everyone is as lucky. I have a 352Mb connection, soon to be 500 but some people don't even have fibre optic which can be a pain.

DaMist1831d ago

5mbps here, makes me sick to my stomach just typing this lol

mkis0071832d ago

Going to be a much bigger jump than ps3 to ps4. It might even get to close to ps2 to ps3.

PhantomS421832d ago

I'd honestly be shocked if we see a jump like that again, I'd love it, but I'd be shocked.

sprinterboy1832d ago (Edited 1832d ago )

Going from a ps4 or xbox one launch model to proper 4k HDR with the specs that we know about will seem like a huge jump imo.
Edit: if your already 4k gaming then the jump will be small.

1831d ago
mkis0071830d ago (Edited 1830d ago )

The CPU and GPU are par for the course, its the balance of that and the SSD standard that will lead to the jump.Assets will be able to load in and out of memory faster than ever before. This will affect GPU and CPU tasks alike. LOD transitions, Shadow Cascades, area transitions, and things that devs haven't even begun to implement yet, will all make that jump very real.

Imagine God of War, but instead of the world tree loop sequence to load the new area, you click on the doorway and you see the full area you selected to fast travel to after a second of white light in the doorway ( the area behind you is already gone the moment you click on it)

We are looking at a "what will be possible now" situation. Things devs havent had the ability to even attempt to add to their games.

DeadlyFire1832d ago

Will be a bigger jump than that.

Kados1832d ago

A jump equal to what we got going from the PS2 to PS3 would require the PS5 to be ~39.6TF. Unless you want a $50,000 console that is the size of a refrigerator, not going to happen.

1831d ago
Kados1831d ago (Edited 1831d ago )

@tree:

Yes.

mkis0071830d ago

Kados

Tflops are not the only jump possible. Tflops do not dictate anything but the gpu power.

Kados1830d ago

@mkis007:

Yes, i understand that. Flops are still the most meaningful measurment of overall capabilities though. You will not see a substantial gain from the CPU, above what is provided by the GPU. Even if consoles used high end desktop grade chips, the most powerful standalone CPU on the market atm is around 600-700 Gflops. The PS4s CPU is around 90 Gflops.

OMGitzThatGuy1832d ago

Hardware wise yes, but visually besides 1st party, graphics prob won't see a big jump. There is only so much talent in game development and most will use the new power as overhead and stick to what they are doing now.

sprinterboy1832d ago

If you haven't played anything in 4k yet this gen then the jump from base model will be huge, but if you've been gaming on the pro with 4k then it will be small.

LightofDarkness1832d ago (Edited 1832d ago )

Honestly, if the hardware allows for it, ray-tracing is a pretty massive jump. It's subtle at first, but the jump in realism shouldn't be understated. All of a sudden you'll notice that your brain thinks it's looking at real images. Once you realise that you can suspend your disbelief for long periods, and you won't want to go back. It's a generational leap.

And the best part about that is that it significantly reduces the number of man hours spent lighting each scene and tweaking shaders to approximate reality, when you have a mostly accurate light simulation running in real-time.

nitus101831d ago

@sprinterboy

I do have a 31.5" HDR 4K monitor although I only have a standard PS4. What is more important for me is the fact that all PS4's support HDR if the particular game supports HDR (see the following link: http://www.pushsquare.com/n... ).

If a game supports HDR and you have an HDR 4k display your PS4 should detect that and enable HDR on your display.

Even though my PS4 can only output a picture at 1080p it does allow HDR if the game supports it and the display will upscale 1080p to 4K and the result is excellent, but what really gives more depth to the picture is HDR.

Note: Some UHD or 4K monitors/TV's don't support HDR so do your homework. My monitor is an "LG 32UK550 31.5" 4K UHD FreeSync HDR LCD Monitor" which is surprisingly cheap and although there are much better ones (ie. much more expensive) available it works (switching takes about two seconds) perfectly on both my PC and my PS4 and is IMHO an excellent size for desktop (I do have to sit back) PS4 gaming.

Gonna be a even bigger jump for the base model ps4 owners ie me which has chosen the patient approach for 4k gaming.
I can't wait to replay hzd, spiderman, gow, days gone etc again nxt gen all in 4k HDR, to think I've got all those games to replay again day 1.

bluebenjamin1831d ago (Edited 1831d ago )

Of course it will be Ps5 sounds like a beast. Good thing you didnt fall for the Pro like I did its not pro at alI, base ps4 did an amazing job keeping up with the Pro(nice way to say this)risk of downvoting 50 %Truth way to say it The Pro was weak I sold mine it did not have enough ram ram would have really wiped the soup off the games its more to it than a sharp image. Most games kept ps4 settings with added filtering the pro was ps4 base with texture filtering and checkerboard 4k sometimes 😏 accept the facts(downvote possibility 100% getting banned 59%

MajorLazer1831d ago

Same. The PS4 still amazes me (Playing Spiderman right now). Can't wait for the PS5. Going to buy a nice 40" 4K HDR TV for my room

Kados1832d ago (Edited 1832d ago )

Not even close. Moore's law ended years ago. The gains from gen to gen, even among PCs is very small and getting smaller. @14TF which is the upper end of what we can expect from the PS5, it will be ~3.5x the power of the PS4 Pro. The jump from the PS3 to original PS4 was ~8x.

Unless we see some breakthrough in computing tech that is actually viable for gaming, the gains from gen to gen from now on will remain at roughly 7-8x (3-4x if we keep getting mid gen refreshes). The days of 22x gains (PS2 to PS3) are dead and gone.

1831d ago
rainslacker1831d ago

Moores law is still in effect, although its speed up its frequency, and the jump is not as frequent due to hitting a wall on what can be done physically at the manufacturing level at a price which is suitable for the consumer.

The noticeable gains from the increased computing power are becoming less apparent though. And as time goes on, there will be even more diminishing returns.

Moores law only applied to CPUs though, not overall computing power, and the way that GPUs are rated is different than how CPUs are rated.

mkis0071830d ago (Edited 1830d ago )

Forget TFLOPS. My words have very little to do with TFLOPS. Bandwidth. Ps4 peak maximum speed HDD : ~~130 mb/s ( never reached ) . What Sony is claiming for ps5 on the conservative side 4,000mb/s. This is what I was referring to. That speed, first the speed of the disc drive, and now the speed of the HDD, is the biggest bottleneck to gaming. It has never been snuffed out until now.

Even if as little 50% of that theoretical 4,000 mb/s( again conservative based on Cerny's words) we are looking at a revolution in what will be possible in how games and their engines are built.

bluebenjamin1831d ago (Edited 1831d ago )

I think you are right ive been complaining about Ps4 and Xbox one base consoles being gen 7.5 since they released so glad the kool aid is wearing off on most of you because at first most of you were so excited to have a new console they they became selectively blind to the fact they were still playing 30 fps on 7th gen games with a bump from 720p to 1080 that my friend is damn near the same not an upgrade more like an adjustment , Ps5 looks like it might be a real Playstation this time around

starchild1831d ago

Yes, but resolution and framerate are far from being the only ways the more powerful hardware benefited game visuals. Games like God of War, The Witcher 3 and Horizon are a huge leap beyond anything we saw on last gen consoles.

bluebenjamin1831d ago (Edited 1831d ago )

@ Starchild HZD KillZone Infamous SS,GOW, all looked marvelous because Sony knows how to find the right development teams. They never had top notch hardware they just have good hardware backed by really talented software artist. The games you mentioned could be programmed to work on the cell how did you think 🤔 ps3 ran the last of us 720P 30 fps
It can handle it well to be dragging along the RSX gpu.The ps3 with parred back visuals lower rez lower AA, it would have ran those games in lower rez because if it couldn’t than the Ps4 should have easily ran GTA V 60Fps A game that has so much going on at once ran on both 7th and 8th gen hardware at 30Fps Let that sink in...

well,if by jump, we're talking better enemy AI or ray tracing/HDR - it's very possible.

indysurfn1831d ago (Edited 1831d ago )

That's a tall order: According to Sony (see article) the PS4 was 10 times more powerfull than PS3.
https://www.trustedreviews....

So to see a 10x jump we will have to go to 10x 4.2 teraflops using PS4 pro. That would put us at 42 teraflops!
Even if we use original PS4 x10 that would be 10x 1.84 teraflops. which is 18.4 teraflops.

Sony Says The PS5 Is Its “Most Profitable Generation To-Date"

During Sony’s recent business segment meeting and investor presentation regarding its game and network services, the PlayStation company revealed that PlayStation 5 is the company’s “most profitable generation to-date.”

It’s the top slide of the presentation, showing that in its first four years, the PS5 generation has already hit $106 billion in sales, having almost caught up to the PS4’s total $107 billion generated.

Operating income for the PS5 generation has also already surpassed that of the PS4, having now reached $10 billion.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I wouldn't doubt it. They released a high quality system. A lot of high quality games from themselves and their support of 3rd party developers and indies. They released many high quality remakes and remasters. They released a high quality GaaS game going against the naysayers thinking Sony would abandon single player games. And they most likely are profiting a lot more than PS1, PS2 PS4 and the loss leading PS3 that drained all their profits.

Now, I'll wait to see what's cooking tomorrow. But can you use some of those profits to better support your high quality VR headset? Because, by supporting it, you can sell more games and more systems and make more profits?

jznrpg2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I want RPGs for PSVR2! Good ones of course

shinoff21832d ago

If it had some rpgs I would buy right fking now. It looks dope and alot of fun, but it's biggest game resident evil 4(maybe) I've got no interest in. I'm not a fan of racing games, even with that metro game coming i was never much into that series. Rpgs would be fantastic.

MrNinosan2d ago

Lemme know if ya wanna play some Zenith 🙌
Bought it at release, but haven't played it more than 1-2 hours but for sure on my "todo list".

Cacabunga2d ago

Normal when they released mostly cross gen games so far. That’s a lot of money saved..
We haven’t seen what PS5 can do yet. 4years in and PS4 games still look great to me. The gen leap isn’t quite there yet.

--Onilink--2d ago

The interesting metric for me is the $106billion in operating income/profit (not sales as mentioned in the article) reaching the same as the PS4 did with only half the consoles sold.

In particular because they all are supposed to be making the most per hardware sold after a few years when manufacturing costs are down.

So even putting inflation aside(and the higher console price), it is interesting that they could reach PS4 $ with just half the consoles sold.

Maybe there is more to the metric thats whats seen at face value, but they have clearly been making a lot more money than before on the software side (with also less games released I suppose, given its only been half the generation so far)

VersusDMC2d ago

The bulk of the money has to be coming from the 30% cut on all games and microtransactions. Especially on all the free to play juggernauts like genshin, apex, fortnight, etc.

--Onilink--2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

@Versus

They are definitely making a lot on that for sure (which the $70 price increase factors into as well), but its not like many of those games werent around for the PS4 too.

They might be counting the gen as a whole and not just PS5 itself (so extra profit from PC sales, whatever that may be)

PS+ price increase and different tiers probably amount to part of that too.

But in general, its still quite a surprising metric. Half the time, half the consoles sold, less first party games released so far and still already making more of a profit than last gen is quite something, and as mentioned, there is probably more to it that we dont know, after all, since we are talking about operating income, all the expenses they have also factor into it, so it is also possible that they have found ways to significantly reduce that + all the means of increased revenue that appear to be factoring into the equation

All in all, just an interesting situation from a business perspective

porkChop2d ago

It's for the whole generation, so it would likely be including PC. They also make much more profit on digital sales vs retail, and digital is far more prominent these days. The generation also started at the height of COVID when everyone was home, spending far more money on gaming/hobbies. It makes a lot of sense for this gen to be more profitable.
