Open world wise...BotW over The Witcher 3

Really?

NecrumOddBoy1242d ago

I don’t understand how or why BOTW is worshipped like it is. I put in 120 hours and chased that carrot in a stick all the way through. It was fine at best. It’s a mediocre game and a bad Zelda title. It’s just a physics sandbox with 200 repetitive minigames or puzzles, and 5 repeats of the same boss.

-Foxtrot1242d ago

Same, I just feel it's nostalgia, the brand name, hype and that it's Nintendo, even these developers over praising it when a few of them have created better open world games or just better games in general. It just comes off like either "I remember growing up with Nintendo, they have a place in my heart" or "Am I allowed to say this isn't amazing or flawless, just a solid game, people are saying it's innovative or revolutionary...that one guy is being slaughtered for giving it a 7/10...yeah I think I'll just go along with others"

No one can say it's a shit game or bad because it's not, it's solid, Nintendo makes those games which bugs/glitches and the like are either non existent or not common, but it doesn't push the open world genre forward like people make out. There are certain elements in games like Elder Scrolls, Witcher, or Horizon Zero Dawn which did things better. All this game was is an open world Zelda game.

As a main Zelda game it was lacking and wasn't that good, it had a lot of features which were a step back, these features which made past main Zelda games so good.

Past main Zelda games had great Dungeons with their own overall themes, epic boss fights, an actual story, side quests, memorable NPCs, a variety of enemies, environments which felt unique to that area. All that was missing in this game and even though there were pros, it was outweighed by the scaled back or missing elements.

So yeah, I don't get people over praising it trying to make out it revolutionised the open world genre when it didn't, if that was released on the Nintendo Switch by a third party developer it wouldn't have done that well. I just find it funny how these journalists have nit picked so many open world games yet some of the same things BotW is guilty of gets a free pass, even mentioning faults like the awful weapon breakage system like a month or so after launch but didn't mention it in their review. Personally if we are going for open world games, then that year Horizon Zero Dawn was my GOTY, maybe that didn't push the open world genre but at least the concept of robot dinosaurs was fresh and the game actually had a cinematic overall story, even the dungeons (cauldrons) were better,

Neonridr1242d ago (Edited 1242d ago )

You don't understand why some people might enjoy the game just because you don't? Some people didn't enjoy TLOU2. Does that mean they are right?

@Foxtrot - if Horizon was your GOTY that year then who cares? Why do you guys get so worked up because BOTW won so many awards? I swear it actually offends you guys in some capacity.

Cikatriz_ESP1242d ago

@Neonridr

The opposition to BotW would logically be proportionate to the praise for the game. To pretend it’s overblown shows a willingness to misunderstand the opposition, a telltale sign of someone who doesn’t respect the opinions of others.

Breath of the Wild isn't loved because of rose tinted glasses, i loved the game and i'm not a fan of the 3D Zelda games and you had guys like Angry Joe who praised the game despite it being their first Zelda game. The game excels over a lot of other open world games for fusing a lot of ideas in a polished package with a lot of fun gameplay experimentation choices that's simply not possible in other games.

To pick from your comment you bring up enemy variety and how other games open world games do thing better: a basic Bokoblin in Breath of The Wild acts far more intelligently than most the enemies in the games you mentioned, they'll light wooden weapon is grass fires, they start strafing if you start using your bow, they'll be curious about the Rune blue orb that rolls down a hill until it explodes, for the rest of the fight they'll avoid or kick them away, they'll pick up discarded weapons on the battlefield ect. How does this compare to the average enemies in The Witcher? or TeS, or Zero dawn? It doesn't, they follow the same small rule set regardless of the situation and are fairly basic in comparison, which is fine because i love those games but i'm not going to act oblivious for the sake of argument.

It was exactly the game that they advertised and delivered on what they showed, it wasn't supposed to be anything else.

Nintendo games always been overrated

Fluttershy771241d ago

you put 120 hours into it, a game that you believe is mediocre... 120 hours and then you ask why is worshipped like it is... 120 hours

bouzebbal1241d ago

Botw is at same level as tlou2 to me.. Biggest overhyped crap.. Botw is so big and so empty and boring. Shrines are terrible, just to be able to teleport..it's an afterthought.

Best gen games for me are:

Splatoon.
Bloodborne
Tsushima
Days Gone
Dreams
Paper Mario Color Splash

Haven't played Sekiro I'm sure it'll be there.

All I can say about BOTW is I hate most open world games and almost never complete them. I don’t know why exactly I just get very bored pretty early on.

BOTW is the only open world game, besides RDR2 I’ve loved.

“All I can say about BOTW is I hate most open world games and almost never complete them. I don’t know why exactly I just get very bored pretty early on.”

“BOTW is the only open world game, besides RDR2 I’ve loved.“

I’m the same. I just can’t get into or finish any many world games. Zelda: BotW was an exception. I really enjoyed the game.

KyRo1242d ago

The sad reality is is that almost all AAA open world games follow the same gameplay choices. Fetch quests, kill quests and clear camp quests with some added uninspired side missions to make the game feel longer. Add some kind of skill tree and I've just listed nearly all AAA open world games this generation.

deafdani1242d ago

Bro, it's been almost 4 years since BOTW released. Move on.

I personally enjoyed BotW more than the Witcher 3. Different strokes for different folks.

Loool, Angela looks like Brian "Q" Quinn from Impractical Jokers! 😂

https://m.media-amazon.com/...

The rest of them don't look so bad in desig , it just feels like overall the graphics could have been better for 2024. I'm not blown away, but it's alright.

BigBosss1h ago

Could have been worse right? OG Maria looks like Cameron Diaz lol

OtterX1h ago

Days Gone Director Says Bend's Project Costs Over $250M; Says PS Co-CEO Doesn't Want 2 Zombies Games

Days Gone director claims Sony has already poured in at least a $250M in Bend's project; says Days Gone sold more than Death Stranding.

shinoff218317h ago

Well that sucks. Seems they want more online trash. I'd rather of had the sequel if it was single player

MrNinosan3h ago

What online trash games did PS Studios release last 10 years?

Notellin1h ago

The past has nothing to do with the future. This is such a terrible argument. Everyone knows about their current live service push.

-Foxtrot17h ago

It would be a shame if it was true that Hermen never gave the franchise a chance simply because he didn't like it and they already had a "Zombie" game with TLOU.

NaughtyDog are most likely moving onto a new IP next so it would have been the perfect time to do it.

ThinkThink9h ago

Here's where xbox steps in and releases state of decay 3 day and date on ps5.

Grilla2h ago

Days gone 2 was canceled before Herman was in charge. That happened like 4 years ago.

vfl5231h ago

4 years ago he was head of Playstation Studios. He would've probably had a hand in the cancelation.

Notellin1h ago

Man two seconds of research could have saved you from this comment. Amazing work Grilla you fit in with the uniformed N4G community who speaks before verifying anything that they say.

excaliburps3h ago

Yep. Kind of weird since it wasn't a sales flop, no?

I know we have to take what Ross says with a grain of salt since we're hearing just one side of the story, but even so, the game wasn't bad at all. Heck, it's my brother's favorite last-gen game from what I recall.

The amount of zombies on screen, imagine that with the PS5 and SSD? That would be insanely fun!

Grilla2h ago

Most copies were sold on sale. Not enough ppl bought it at full price. I paid 20$ for it 6 -7 months after release.

Notellin59m ago(Edited 57m ago)

Yeah we should never believe the creators side until we hear the corporate/big business side as history has shown we should always believe billion dollar corporations.

What a bootlicker statement.

P_Bomb3h ago

Well I don’t want 10 live service games, but they have no problem doing that lol. Ugh.

CrimsonWing692h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Oh great so we only get what the big wigs want… y’know, the people that really have their fingers on the pulse of what their consumers want. Faaaaantastic!
