Xbox isn't wrong for charging more, they are wrong for having nothing to charge for

Xbox's planned, then abandoned, price hike for online membership has irritated the internet, but not for the right reasons. No one will ever enjoy a price increase. But the real problem on the part of Microsoft is the consistent lack of worthwhile things on offer in exchange for any quantity of our money, having cannibalized their core brands and refused to invest in ambitious or noteworthy new IPs. Join us at GreenDragonCVR for a discussion of what a healthy relationship of video games and business might look like. Also featuring the fantastic Resident Evil VIII Maiden demo (Resident Evil makes an interesting counterexample to MS franchises: still made by the same people making a very different sort of game, while Halo is made by different people making the same).

I can agree with this. I love the brand and have invested heavily game-wise. My one annoyance is the lack of first-party games.

They have promised many titles, but it never seems to actually happen.

TheProblem1223d ago

I don’t think anything could justify a 100% price hike

GamerRN1223d ago

Thankfully it was reversed and free to play was taken out of the pay wall

Godmars2901223d ago

@GamerRN:
Only because of backlash. Something they should have known would draw backlash. Something they knew enough to remove the f2p requirement to soften their BS.

While I disagree with the gold price hike the article is wrong, atleast for gamespass. Day one first party games on gamespass , Minecraft dungeons, hive busters on day one and halo infinite coming this year on the service along with tons of other third party games is def worth charging for.

Livingthedream1223d ago

The gamepass price of admission is fine, but their proposed Gold increase is ridiculous. They're two different things.

MrNinosan1223d ago

When you said Day One first party, you didn’t need to add Minecraft Dungeons and Halo Infinite as they are included in that.

I bought Series X in hope to believe all the hype about Gamepass, but shortly after, I realised I still get more and better for a lower price with PSNow.

Now I’m stuck with Game Pass for 2 years, so I hope the money was worth it when those 2 years have passed.

gamer78041223d ago

@MrNino How do you get more with psnow? All ps3 games are streamed and there is no day one ps games

SpineSaw1223d ago

@gamer7804
If only those "Day one First Party games" were must have, must play games but there not and I don't see a day when that changes even with Microsoft buying more gaming studios and producing more games. They maybe day one on GP but they will be multi-platform and one day in the $5 bin and maybe at that point be a must have game.

gamer78041223d ago

@spine that’s your opinion on what is must have though, halo Mac collection and gears 5 with hive busters are fantastic. Minecraft dungeons is also a blast especially if you have kids

343_Guilty_Spark1223d ago

You don't get more with PS Now

Teflon021221d ago

343

Actually you factually get more with PS Now. Like, literally google the quantity lol

gamer78041221d ago

@teflon. Oh you are talking number of games so quantity not quality whether visually (streaming only for ps3) or day one first party. Got it.

gamer78041221d ago

@raul that’s pretty much what I said. They listened to feedback from the hike and realized it was a bad move and rectified that as well as the free to play games aspect. So it’s a win for Xbox gamers.

I guess Microsoft ain't making enough from gamepass 😁

RauLeCreuset1223d ago

The "annoyance" and the problem is how they conned so many into believing moves made to further Xbox's financial interests were pro consumer and about giving options, only to try blatantly undermining one of those options to the point that Live Gold only users would effectively be forced into buying a bundled Live Gold and Game Pass service they didn't want.

Livingthedream1223d ago

The increase doesn't make sense at all, I subscribed to game pass and have about about 2 1/2 years left because I converted a whole lot of gold into gp ultimate. I'm thinking a lot of people did something like this. Got three years of GP for about 100

gamer78041223d ago

It’s good they listened though rather than just sticking with a price hike whether it’s for a subscription or new games no?

RauLeCreuset1223d ago

@Livingthedream

It makes sense if you consider the blatant money grab would have affected a smaller community of gamers if what you said is correct. The potential for success increases when the number of people impacted is reduced. It's not so much about getting people to pay more for Gold as it is pressuring them to join those of you paying for GPU.

@gamer7804

No. You say "they listened," and that's the spin they're putting on it. It would be more accurate to say "they tried it." It doesn't take listening to know that a 100% price gouge and locking F2P behind a paywall are taking advantage of consumers. The only thing they listened to was the level of backlash to determine whether it was safe to proceed or if they should bide their time while playing the F2P card to regain the pro consumer narrative by not doing something they obviously shouldn't have done or considered doing and finally doing something they should have done 15 years ago.

I agree their hasn't been alot to get excited for. But they have invested heavily in studios. So I expect them to reveal new ips in the future.

GreenDragonCVR1224d ago

Hope so too! We are looking forward to Avowed. Even the Medium looks interesting. Its cool what they did with Gears Tactics too. These all just feel like sidenotes to the main MS show (of cloned games and sub offerings).

SullysCigar1223d ago

And for the IPs they've bought to release on all platforms to recoup acquisition costs...lol

rlow11223d ago

@sullycigar, trolling along I can see, definitely not surprise to see you putting a positive twist on things. I can agree they will bring most games to their ecosystem, but I'm not sure what you mean by all platforms. If your talking the Playstation Eco system, its a far flung possibility. To imply that they are so desperate for cash they would do anything.....keep smoking.

RauLeCreuset1223d ago

Right? Such balderdash. Xbox doesn't want money. Sully's talking like we're only having this conversation because Xbox just tried pulling a fast one to force Live Gold subscribers to either pay at least twice the cost of the 12-month subscription or shell out even more for the better valued GPU. The idea that Xbox might seek to recoup the costs of acquiring 3rd party IPs that were previously reliant on PS sales by continuing to sell them on PS is so far fetched as to be unworthy of consideration.

Silly gameAr1223d ago

Probably IP's that were already in the making before MS bought the studios.

Can FSR 3 frame generation deliver the 120fps dream on PS5 and Xbox?

Frame generation technology has arrived on consoles, amplifying frame-rates and potentially transforming experiences.

adds between 8.3-15.3 milliseconds of latency on the game they tested, - no thanks

darksky56m ago

Base latency is 130.8ms and frame gen takes that up to 139.1ms. A 7% increase in latency is hardly a deal breaker.

Zenzuu51m ago

That's hardly a deal breaker and not really noticeable. Even the folks at Digital Foundry said so as well.

darthv7218h ago

Impressive results... sadly I don't have a 120hz display. I was thinking this technique could increase fps on any game that supports it regardless of the display.

purple10118h ago(Edited 18h ago)

I have a vrr telly in the lounge,

On another point, what if it were the other way around where the developer aims for higher fps, then used something like pssr to make the resolution higher, that might be better?

Any which way, PS5 pro sure looks interesting now, being they have already doubled frame rate, with JUST just this fsr3.0

andy8531m ago

Now I've extensively tried it I'm not too fussed about 120 fps. Give me a locked 60 and more details and I'm more than happy

Very very early in development. Still, fantastic news!

Let´s GO!!!

Lightning7712h ago

I guess.

How come they didnt either let them go or sell Tango and others to another publisher? Not saying Ubisoft, EA would be any better. (Capcome would of treated them right )

At least it wouldn't be MS of all ppl destroying them.

MS really should let go Tango go like they did TFB here.

darthv7211h ago(Edited 11h ago)

one was under Bethesda (Tango) the other under Activision (TFB). Clearly each one handled the separations of their subordinates differently.

Obscure_Observer11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

"How come they didnt either let them go or sell Tango and others to another publisher? Not saying Ubisoft, EA would be any better. (Capcome would of treated them right )"

Perhaps because Zenimax and ABK handles such matters differently based on their own internal policies as "independent" publishers.

Whoever, chances are it´s simply because MS didn´t wanted Tango or Austin to be acquired by competitors and develop new bangers for them, giving MS a bad rep in a possible future. Which could also be the reason why they ensured an exclusive partnership with TFB and its new game, before anyone else.

Sad and disgusting. But it is what it is.

Lightning777h ago(Edited 7h ago)

"Whoever, chances are it´s simply because MS didn´t wanted Tango or Austin to be acquired by competitors and develop new bangers for them, giving MS a bad rep in a possible future."

MS has a bad rep now because those studios are no more. I rather them sell the studio continue to make multiplatform releases, while MS continues to focus on whatever they're doing. If they didn't want Tango around they should separated from them or sell them to, like they did TFB.

It's inexcusable, they have options on how to handle studios they don't want anymore with killing jobs. Not just MS but the rest of the industry also.

Sad and disgusting sure how many will get shut down next year or this year even?

I don't trust MS decisions and motivations at this point. You have to admit they make one dumb move after another.

Obscure_Observer7m ago(Edited 7m ago)

Imo, MS separated from TFB because they didn´t had a game associated with Xbox yet, unlike Tango.

"I don't trust MS decisions and motivations at this point. You have to admit they make one dumb move after another."

Fair enough. It was indeed an epic dumb move from them to close Tango.

Still, all to be forgotten, like always have. This is not the first time a big publisher shuts down a beloved and/or successful studio out of nowhere and certainly won´t be the last. Do you remember Lionhead? Do you remember Evolution Studios? Yeah... both were beloved studios and yet, those companies kill those studios in q blink of an eye and got away with it.

-Foxtrot13h ago

Manages to buy their freedom especially after all the shit Microsoft has been doing with its studios lately

...

Goes right back to them as partners.

Okaaaaaay...

darthv7211h ago

Id venture a guess that TFB working directly with MS was a better outcome than working through Activision to get to MS.

VersusDMC9h ago

From the article...

"Toys for Bob spun out as an indie back in February after Microsoft instituted sweeping layoffs that impacted 86 employees, which was more than half of the staff"

I doubt those 86 employees enjoyed the Microsoft experience over Activisions.

Inverno9h ago

MS shuts down studios because of lack of resources and then helps these guys by giving em resources. Also MS is what forced them to buy their freedom in the first place? What kind of logic 😂

Chevalier6h ago

The best thing is that the company that is worth $3 trillion and owns the company instead of Xbox lacks resources. How the hell does a company worth $3 trillion making a measly $70 billion purchase they 'can't' support. Lol

Sciurus_vulgaris11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

Xbox’s gaming division seems to still function as 3 semi-autonomous sub-divisions, Xbox Studios, Bethesda and ABK. The three main sub-divisions can seemingly shut down or build studios and set up partnerships independently. This would explain why Bethesda can recently shutdown studios, while ABK spins off one studio, while building a new one. Plus, Toys for Bob could be spun off by ABK, only to immediately re-partner with Microsoft.

Chevalier6h ago

That's absolutely 💯 BS. Any sane 'autonomous' company would NOT put their games on Gamepass day 1 like COD will lose probably billions.

Also they're all under Xbox game studios so any autonomy is an illusion.

Elda6h ago

Either a kiddie game or something uninteresting.

Profchaos2h ago

Wasn't a short detailed leak about 12 hours prior it was hey there's going to be a astro bot a VR game and a few other things specified but massively underwhelming leak tbh

Profchaos2h ago

For this state of play not at all

Relientk7720h ago

This is news to me. I had no idea the games from the State of Play got leaked.

Jin_Sakai12h ago

I seen the list posted and instantly got excited for Astro Bot. Everything else was meh.

CrimsonWing6913h ago

I’m pretty sure leaks or not, by the end of the show people will still be disappointed. The only highlight for me was MH: Wilds… everything else was mid to forgettable. Hope them HaaS games you got lined up really work out for you, Sony. Everyone asking for Bloodborne Remake, Wolverine, and, uh, well other games like that could’ve made this epic. Instead we get Concord, some derivative Souls-like games, that were fine looking, and a Silent Hill 2 Remake with horrible character designs and janky combat animations… great.

rayford1512h ago

I wasn’t disappointed it was a solid B

TOTSUKO10h ago

For a State of play it was actually alright. People are overshadowing it because they want to cancel Sony to high hell for Gaas which is not fair for the other devs who revealed great looking games that were just shown. I get it you don’t like gaas don’t buy it. If it sells well good for the people who had interest no big deal? If you are a PlayStation fan what’s wrong with PlayStation trying to cater every gamer? I don’t understand that smh

ravens5211h ago

Where Winds Meet and Ballad of Antara both looked good. Not to mention Astro Bot. It was a decent show. For me personally it was a 7. I'm sure to some people it was actually really good cause they'd play all those games. 🤷🏽 Personal taste

MrNinosan10h ago

I wasn't dissapointed.
And no, everyone doesn't want a Bloodborne Remake. There is probably very few who's actually asking for it, but the ones who do are loud on internet.

CrimsonWing699h ago(Edited 9h ago)

Oh, my mistake. It’s definitely not one of the most requested games when it comes to remakes with news stories talking about it 🙄

https://comicbook.com/gamin...

https://www.gamingbible.com...

https://www.yahoo.com/tech/...

https://gamerant.com/fromso...

Silly me. It’s just a very few that are actually wanting it…

MrNinosan2h ago

@CrimsonWings69
And you just proved what I wrote.

If Bloodborne was remestered or remade, it would still sell less than Final Fantasy XVI or VII Rebirth, probably be called a great succes from it's core fans, but most wouldn't care.

I love Bloodborne, I want a new release of it, but it's niche and has sold crap compared to most of Playstation Studios bigger titles.

Astro Bot will sell and mean more to Playstation than a Bloodborne Remake.
