Will there be a Horizon Forbidden West sequel? Guerrilla's creative director seems to think so

It sure sounds like we’re going to be getting more Aloy (and friends) in the future

zsquaresoff778d ago

Well, that's fairly obvious considering the ending. How the world, story, and gameplay will change is the most exciting aspect. Here's hoping that the 3rd part is PS5 only.

-Foxtrot778d ago

I love the game and franchise as a whole but while the first game was establishing the franchise, the sequel was a great refinement. The issue here though is do we really want another franchise to be burnt out by them, we all saw what happened to Killzone and the amount of games it got over the years. In the end the quality dropped a little and we all thought they got a little samey. I just feel if we have another sequel so soon there might not be enough new things to really let it stand out and the quality might suffer, I mean hell some reviewers were already a little nit picky with it here and there now.

Even though it's not going to happen I'd rather see Horizon 3 at very end of the PS5's life cycle or as a launch title for the PS6. I would rather see GG do a new IP, maybe a full on fantasy RPG like the Elder Scrolls or something.

andy85777d ago

You've talking like there have been yearly games. There was half a decade between the two installments

CaptainHenry916777d ago

Hopefully they fix everything when the 3rd game comes out

-Foxtrot777d ago

Andy85

I didn’t say that though 🤷🏻‍♂️

My point is do people really just want them churn them out, along with spin offs which is already happening in the form of a VR game. We’d end up biting ourselves out.

Killzone did the same and it got to a point where it was “yay…another game” and the quality dropped near the end.

I’d rather see a new IP in the middle so they can spend more time getting new ideas so it feels completely fresh

What else can they really do at this point other than better graphics and stuff on the technical side.

jznrpg777d ago (Edited 777d ago )

They have to finish the story that Forbidden West left us at . After the next game I think you have a more valid point depending where the story goes but they aren’t churning out these games . It has been 2 games so far and they both took 4 years to make .
If anything is could see Guerilla adding more people and having a second team like Insomniac as I’ve read at least several of Sony’s studios have done so already .
I would also like them to make other games or new I.P but I don’t want to wait 8 years to finish the story of Horizon assuming it’s a trilogy .
We aren’t guaranteed to be alive tomorrow bring me the games now and as soon as possible !

Well it's gonna take 4 years to make so I'm guessing late on in the gen

CaptainHenry916777d ago

It shouldn't take 4 years if it's only coming to the PS5.

jznrpg777d ago

It’s fairly safe to say it’s not going to be PS4 shortage or not . Games are selling more on PS5 already and by the time the next game is out there should 10’s of millions more PS5’s sold . It could be heading toward PS6 but I think the next game will be out before PS6 is .

JEECE777d ago

Lol I can't wait for PS6 to launch so we can finally get some games actually designed for PS5.

EvertonFC777d ago

I'm guessing late gen but maybe a upgraded version also for ps6

ITPython777d ago

The ending seemed to hint at DLC to wrap everything up rather than a whole new game. Which, TBH, would be Ok with me. I love the Horizon games, but for me Zero Dawn had more of that mysterious and fun story/lore that really kept me playing to find out more. Whereas with Forbidden West I found myself not too interested in the lore (holo messages etc) since the story of the old ones was no longer mysterious (or even relevant). It just felt like pointless filler.

Story/lore - Zero Dawn
Graphics/technical features - Forbidden West
Gameplay - They are both essentially the same. Though I really enjoyed flying! Wish they didn't introduce it so late into the game. I was basically done with everything in the world before playing the mission to unlock it. Yet it was one of the best new experiences BY FAR.

Either way, I say DLC to wrap up the cliffhanger in Forbidden West, then Guerilla should probably move on. The Horizon storyline has been fully exhausted and extracted. The only way I can see them doing another sequel is if it was no longer on earth but some other planet with a whole new story/lore/background. Because the complete story of the old ones and what happened on earth is completely finished and fleshed out. There is no mystery left and I am ok with moving on.

chicken_in_the_corn777d ago

There is absolutely no reason to think it will be on PS4

Sayai jin776d ago

I think the next will be PS5 only and hopefully the chip shortage allows most who want a PS5 to be able to buy one.

babadivad776d ago

Haven't beaten forbidden west yet. Was waiting for it to be fully cooked before diving in.

Hope Guerilla does something new next and then after that do the Forbidden West sequel.
To something different for a change.

-Foxtrot777d ago

I really don’t know why people are against this

They’d be the first to complain when we get another so soon and it comes off samey than the last one

Take a break, do something new, come back

There’s literally no rush

Eonjay777d ago

It ended on a pretty big cliffhanger so I can see people wanting to see what happened. And there was 5 years between ZD and FW so I don't think they are rushing anything tbh. By the same token, we don't want the wait to be like Kingdom Hearts 2-3 (14 year wait). Also, it has been reported for quite some time now that GG is working on another new multiplayer IP. So not only will we get a new game from them before Horizon 3, I think they have been working on multiple projects for quite some time now. I think everyone gets what they want here.

EvertonFC777d ago

I'm hoping for the finale next and conclude everything before moving onto a new ip, but I get what you mean.

Knightofelemia778d ago

If the game is popular, the game sells well, and is fun to play, pretty sure Sony will green light Horizon 3. Numbers will also do even better when or if Sony ports Horizon Fobidden West to PC. Sony would be nuts not to make another sequel with Aloy.

Eonjay777d ago

Speaking of PC, has anyone noticed that Sony hasn't released any of their newer PS5 games on PC yet. When they do I'm interested to see if they will mandate SSD as min required.... Now that current gent consoles support SSD by default, I wonder if devs will push for this as standard on PCs as well. I belive some already have.

rayford15777d ago

@Eonjay “Kingdom Hearts 2-3 (14 year wait)” like it ain’t over 10 games in the series 😂 between 2 and 3 smh

SullysCigar778d ago

These guys are on a winning streak. When you think how far they've come and how they smashed their first attempt at an open world...I can't wait to play the next part in the franchise.

I'm hoping their success will allow for expansion, so they can develop more than one game at a time, like Naughty Dog have done. Horizon 3 and something else - best of both worlds for us greedy gamers!

Orchard777d ago

Isn't that all but guaranteed? The game is a hit franchise and guaranteed success unless they massively screw up.

I would like to see another KZ first though.

CaptainHenry916777d ago

I would like them to create a new fps

Eonjay777d ago

They are already working on a new multiplayer title. I assume it may be an FPS from their pedigree but who knows.
Also, have you noticed that all of their games are sci fi games? Also I know a lot of people like KZ but they have made 6 killzone games and that probably how we got Horizon in the first place. I could see them going back eventually, but I would more like to see them tackle a new IP first.

Days Gone Director Says Bend's Project Costs Over $250M; Says PS Co-CEO Doesn't Want 2 Zombies Games

Days Gone director claims Sony has already poured in at least a $250M in Bend's project; says Days Gone sold more than Death Stranding.

shinoff218318h ago

Well that sucks. Seems they want more online trash. I'd rather of had the sequel if it was single player

MrNinosan3h ago

What online trash games did PS Studios release last 10 years?

Notellin1h ago

The past has nothing to do with the future. This is such a terrible argument. Everyone knows about their current live service push.

_SilverHawk_25m ago

It's so tragic what happened to days gone. It is such an amazing game but bandwagoners trashed it and it underperformed in it's launch year. Days gone is the best open world zombie game released in the past five years. I was recently playing it on pc and I'm still amazed by it.

Games are very expensive to make and it seems like it's normal for a AAA game to cost over a quarter billion to make so if a quality game like days gone greatly underperforms then people shouldn't be upset when they see a lot of GAAS. I still remember a lot of bandwagoners calling days gone trash but years later it's now amazing when it's considered a failure by sony.

If a game isn't the best thing seen since hats with pockets then a lot of gamers who haven't played it automatically calls it rubbish and whoever made it should be incarcerated

-Foxtrot17h ago

It would be a shame if it was true that Hermen never gave the franchise a chance simply because he didn't like it and they already had a "Zombie" game with TLOU.

NaughtyDog are most likely moving onto a new IP next so it would have been the perfect time to do it.

ThinkThink9h ago

Here's where xbox steps in and releases state of decay 3 day and date on ps5.

Grilla3h ago

Days gone 2 was canceled before Herman was in charge. That happened like 4 years ago.

vfl5232h ago

4 years ago he was head of Playstation Studios. He would've probably had a hand in the cancelation.

Notellin1h ago

Man two seconds of research could have saved you from this comment. Amazing work Grilla you fit in with the uniformed N4G community who speaks before verifying anything that they say.

Redemption-6419m ago

Maybe encourage people to buy the game at full price and not when it's heavily discounted or go on plus. If this game had sold well when it was full priced a sequel would have been in the works. They made a single-player game that most people didn't support until they dropped the price.

excaliburps4h ago

Yep. Kind of weird since it wasn't a sales flop, no?

I know we have to take what Ross says with a grain of salt since we're hearing just one side of the story, but even so, the game wasn't bad at all. Heck, it's my brother's favorite last-gen game from what I recall.

The amount of zombies on screen, imagine that with the PS5 and SSD? That would be insanely fun!

Grilla3h ago

Most copies were sold on sale. Not enough ppl bought it at full price. I paid 20$ for it 6 -7 months after release.

Notellin1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Yeah we should never believe the creators side until we hear the corporate/big business side as history has shown we should always believe billion dollar corporations.

What a bootlicker statement.

P_Bomb3h ago

Well I don’t want 10 live service games, but they have no problem doing that lol. Ugh.

CrimsonWing693h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Oh great so we only get what the big wigs want… y’know, the people that really have their fingers on the pulse of what their consumers want. Faaaaantastic!

rippermcrip19m ago

Well consider they know the sales... they do know what the consumer wants.

It sold shit.
