Xbox Reportedly Turned Down Marvel's Offer To Make Exclusive Games

Spider-Man could have been an Xbox exclusive, but apparently, Microsoft turned Marvel down when approached.

@all above, i see none of you get it. "At the time"... meaning since then Phil and the gang have been making better choices. But (again) at the time it was a huge missed opportunity. 8 years ago, they werent interested in licensed properties and were into micromanaging the teams they did have. Now they have more teams and a more hands off approach and are working with licensed properties (Indiana Jones for ex).

“Now they are more hands off” and have nothing to show for it, everything got delayed they’ve launched 2 consoles with barely as many top exclusives to go with it. They conned people into going next gen with these systems then made the very select few games they have released available on last gen systems so nobody needed to buy the new system
They should have delayed it a year but didn’t wanna be a year behind Sony because it would of course look better to have a console on the shelves nothing to sell with it but we got the console out, which they’ll upgrade or replace with series X2 by the time these licensed properties they are working with come to fruition. Indiana Jones is currently barely a logo and they’ve shown nothing since no doubt having problems like fable (I meant perfect dark but 🤷🏻‍♂️) like halo which is still unfinished I mean sure yeah fantastic management. The way I see it, their priority was making a great game to rival the Arkham games......doubt they were even thinking about making a movie based on that game. Plus at that time I doubt that Spider-Man was even decided on as the character.....Insomniac could have chosen Wolverine to start with for instance. So basically I don't think Sony's movie rights to Spider-man played any role in this.

I remember that too. Insomniac chose Spider-Man, out of all the Marvel guys, due to his appeal and large fan base.

Sony owns the movie rights only. The video game rights are completely separate, which is why Spider-Man appears in other games on other platforms.

To my understanding, Marvel approached Insomniac to make a Marvel game featuring a hero of their choosing. It was then that they opted to make a Spider-Man game, because of how iconic he is. Sony does hold the film rights to Spider-Man but not all of Marvel. Still...I agree that they were an obvious choice given they have what is presumably a good working relationship with Marvel.

Marvel had to have approached Sony 1st and Sony then contacted Insomniac. Had Marvel just gone straight to Insomniac I doubt that the game would have been a PlayStation exclusive.

I could see a PC release being part of the deal, even before Sony really started ramping up their PC ports, but not Xbox. Still...now that you mention it, I believe I do recall there being mention of Marvel approaching Sony, and Sony recommending Insomniac, so you might be correct about the sequence of events.

Although the term battle royal was first introduced by player unknown battle ground if I’m not mistaken the mode has existed for years in FPS/TPS under names like survivor / last man standing I remember Starhawk have a lone wolf trophy so a game like that or capture the flag would be more likely wouldn’t be impossible for Microsoft at the time

Counterpoint: Insomniac was not a PS studio when given Spider-Man. All Xbox had to do was foot the bill and get out of their own way, but they're so focused on chasing success by latching onto what's already popular that they passed on an opportunity like this, which probably cemented Insomniac joining PS.

I read this and think back to Phil Spencer rationalizing the Tomb Raider deal by saying he wishes Xbox had an action adventure game like Uncharted. There is something inherently odd about rationalizing playing it safe by expressing a desire for something produced by taking a risk.

More to Creusets comment. Just look at the risk Playstation takes versus Xbox. Uncharted for example you probably think that's NOT a risk right? You'd be wrong. People forget the 1st game on PS3 first month sales were only 50,000. Yet Playstation took the risk to build up that franchise.

On the other had look at Xbox. Record? Quantum Break? Etc... did Xbox release sequels to any game that didn't start off well then build them up? Nope.

Playstation could have also not taken risks and continue to milk Uncharted instead of risking making TLOU for example, same with Suckerpunch with moving from Infamous to Ghost of Tsushima. Sure TLOU and Ghost of Tsushima were wildly successful, but, on the flip side they could have failed miserably.

When Playstation could have played it safe and just continue as is rather than take a risk and start new franchises they took the risk and let their studios make new games unlike Xbox studios. Whereas Naughty Dog and Suckerpunch in the same time frame moved onto other franchises did say The Coalition or 343? Nope they're still only doing Gears and Halo.

Spiderman is the third most recognizable superhero next to Superman and Batman. For Microsoft to pass on that, I can only speculate that they've been in talks with Warner Bros. for years for an acquisition.

Remember Phil Spencer said Single Player games was dead back then... 50 million units of Spiderman and Miles later and clearly he was wrong. He has spent nearly 70 billion on studios. Imagine the crazy good single player games he could have funded with a fraction of that. I would look at Sunset Overdrive and Spider-Man as comparisons of what the OG Xbox and OG PS4 were comparably capable of.

Both of these games were made by the same developer, a great developer, and one game is just bigger and faster than the other.

The OG Xbox hardware was not capable of the Spider-Man game everyone wanted.

Sunset Overdrive and Spiderman are years apart. SO in particular came out at the start of the generation when the technology used to build games for the new platforms was still nascent. Developers typically learn how use the platforms better the deeper into the generation they get.

I don't see the difference between the games as reflection of the difference in platforms but more the difference in what Insomniac where capable of doing at the time they started developing SO vs when they started development of Spiderman.

Also they had already released SO which surely influenced how they approached making an open world action game.

I don't think it would have been bad if MS had the rights, they could have possibly made some good games. The fact is they didn't, and the Spiderman games thus far have been excellent. All the "ifs" don't matter, we got an excellent product from Sony and Insomniac so why would anyone want to change that? I somehow doubt this as Marvel don't even have the rights to the Spiderman Movies/Games as its owned by Sony. Does no one remember the amount of effort it took to get Spiderman in the MCU and how Sony stopped Spiderman coming to Xbox on the avengers game.

Whether they passed up on the offer, I don't know, but I'm pretty sure we would have heard something about it before now. Sony have announced 2 up and coming marvel games of their own in Wolverine and Spiderman 2, where was this news before then?

1) Sony only has the rights to make Spider-man movies...the game could have been made by anyone including Xbox 2) Marvel approached Microsoft to make an original MARVEL game....no mention of which character ( Insomniac chose Spider-man AFTER Sony agreed to take on the challenge )....Xbox could have done the same. 3) Yes, Spider-nan was only on PS for Avengers.....that is what hapoens WHEN YOU WERE THE COMPANY THAT SUPPORTED MARVEL AND MADE THEM THE GAME THEY WERE DREAMING OF! They get Wolverine too.....why?....because they knocked it out of the park for Marvel and proved themselves. That is the 'Stark Realty'. Sony have owned the movies rights for ages now but have never owned the game rights or any other media rights to spiderman.

But sure beleive what u want if that help u sleep at night but there is a reason spiderman was available on all platforms before this and its because sony dont own the rights lol.

Onky reason its exclusive now is that sony was the only one willing to put in the time, effort, dev cost to make the game hence if they were going to do all of that then ofcpurse it wpuld be exclusive, but thats something marvel agreed to not something sony had power of them to do.

Insomniac handled Spiderman really well I enjoyed Spiderman and Miles Morales. I have a feeling I will also enjoy Spiderman 2 and my favorite character Wolverine when he comes out. I have played some of the Activision Spiderman games they were ok but not as good as Insomniac's Spiderman. And the way Crystal Dynamics handled him for the Avengers games was in my eyes a mess. I just wonder if Microsoft regrets turning down Marvel and I wonder if Marvel will approach Microsoft again for another Marvel hero. And if say Marvel did approach Microsoft or if Microsoft approached Marvel for an exclusive Marvel Hero I wonder who they would choose.

Microsoft had a chance to make a Marvel Universe Online game like Sony did with DC Online. Did Microsoft take the risk? Nope.

Now, you would think Cryptic Studios would have been a perfect fit to make the game since they did City of Heroes on PC. CANCELED. Because Microsoft believed there couldn't be more than one successful MMO game. Sony and Square made it work with FF Online. And then were successful for years with a FREE to play game with DC Online. Even though Sony sold the developer, that game is still played to this day.

But that's Microsoft in a nutshell. Never takes risks. That's two times they could have had a Marvel game, multiplayer and possibly single player. And they balked at both

Add this to the already laundry list of idiotic things that Spencer and the XBOX team has done over the years. I've been saying it for years hoping they will make better gaming decisions but finally realized that these guys appeal to certain types of gamers and not all gamers. Once you understand that, then you understand the decisions they make.
