PlayStation VR 2 Hands-On: Sony's Upcoming PS5 VR Headset Wowed Me - CNet

Sony's new display and controllers for its 2023 VR headset make a great first impression.

ApocalypseShadow622d ago

It made many go WOW. New console headset for a new generation of VR.

But if you like, you can still play PSVR 1 on PS5 with an adapter. Almost complete BC capability.

GamingSinceForever622d ago

You’re making excuses for them with that. PSVR is so cumbersome to hook up and disconnect that it wouldn’t be worth the hassle. They should have considered supporting the games from
the original. It isn’t impossible.

walken7622d ago

I'm annoyed the new one isn't bc as well. But why do you disconnect it anyway? I just leave mine connected. No hassle.

GamingSinceForever622d ago

@Walken7…For some reason my screen when playing outside of VR would go black for a few seconds here and there so I would have to unhook it. As to my response above I was referring to having to swap between the two on PS5. That’s a deal breaker.

ApocalypseShadow622d ago (Edited 622d ago )

Let's see...

Sony makes cross platform games with PS4 and PS5 and all we hear is snickering about Jim Ryan talking about "we believe in generations." Fans complain. Actually, Xbox fans. PlayStation fans are fine with games like Demon Souls remade and cross platform games like Horizon.

"We want PS5 only games. We want next gen graphics." Spider-Man MM is just DLC. Demon Souls is an old game. Ratchet and Clank could play exactly on PS4. Horizon and GOW should be PS5 only."

Sony makes PS VR 2 on PS5 a generational leap beyond PSVR where only next generation VR plays on it and it's

"Why can't I play my old PSVR games on the new headset? It's so easy and you can just flip a switch with the APIs and it'll just work. I want free upgrade paths for any games remade to work on PS VR 2. Sony's greedy. Sony is anti consumer." I don't want two headsets sitting next to each other. I want to sell the old one so that my entertainment center is crisp and clean."

PSVR works on PS5 with an adapter. PS VR 2 is a whole generational leap. If BC mattered, how come Switch and PS4 sold over 110 million while Xbox one with BC didn't sell over 50 million? Could you answer this please?

1nsomniac622d ago (Edited 622d ago )

@walken7 the ps5 doesn’t have enough ports to have a PSVR and external HDD connected, as they both have to be connected to the single dedicated port on the back. The original PSVR doesn’t have real 4K/HDR pass through either so you are handicapping your ps5 straight out of the box. There’s lots of reasons its not possible to leave it connected. I have both the above issues for example.

As for @ApocalypseShadow, that’s the most intentional Sony PR spokesperson response I’ve seen. Even for N4G that’s bad!

UltimateRacer622d ago (Edited 622d ago )

It’s been confirmed by insider YoutuberWithoutParol who has been spot on with there PSVR2 news, most Devs that have PSVR games are currently updating them for PSVR2 so you will be able to play your older titles on the newer hardware in the near future.

darthv72622d ago

@shadow... "PlayStation fans are fine with games like Demon Souls remade and cross platform games like Horizon."

Really??? You may be fine, but I know a lot of PS fans that weren't too happy about LoU Part 1 and the continued crossgen push. It doesn't bother me either way but you don't speak for everyone (which, yes... you tried to do).

As for this topic, Im really excited for the improvements made to the HMD. It looks to address many of the issues I have while trying to play VR1 and it would have been a great bonus if the VR1 games were enhanced on the VR2 but its not a deal breaker.

blackblades622d ago

@Apoc it's just another day of blaming everything on jimmy

Army_of_Darkness622d ago (Edited 622d ago )

Sure having no bc sucks for psvr2, but by all means is No deal breaker! Psvr was the reason I went from nay to yay for virtual reality gaming! It is indeed the next level of gaming! And it's amazing! I'm super excited for psvr2 whether it has bc or not. My pro is still connected with the original Psvr so I'm good regardless.

Next up: $70 ‘remakes’ and paid upgrades for games people already own.

RickRoland622d ago (Edited 622d ago )

Next up….another 8 months without an Xbox exclusive, no differentiating experiences and zero games worth a remake in the Microsoft franchise list…but we are open to buying more talent!

Orchard622d ago

It’s about 23 months for me without an Xbox exclusive, Xbox games don’t work in my PS5 🤗

But I fail to see how your comment is on topic.

RickRoland622d ago

Nothing you said is relevant to a VR2 article.

Orchard622d ago (Edited 622d ago )

But is relevant to the comment I’m replying to which talks about PSVR2 back compat - which is also a PSVR topic.

RickRoland622d ago

Considering PSVR titles weren’t even $59.99 last gen….you’re just flinging nonsense.

Orchard622d ago

That was back when Sony was for the players and consumer friendly. I expect Horizon will be a full price VR game.

CaptainHenry916622d ago

Jim Ryan is smiling about it. Definitely Anti-consumer move

You went a little too deep there. PSVR is a niche accessory that cost damn near as much as the system. Not many bought one like myself. The support for it was lacking when you look at how much it costed so the least they could have done here was make those games work on the new one.

Playstation is my console of choice so this isn’t a fanboy rant. I’m just giving my honest opinion. This time around I simply won’t be buying one. End of story.

generic-user-name622d ago

"the least they could have done here was make those games work on the new one."

Why do my Wii U discs not work on my Switch?

ApocalypseShadow622d ago

Sony did make PSVR games work on PS5.

Here. Let me show you how
https://pbs.twimg.com/media...

Sony didn't have to do that at all and locked PSVR to PS4 and PS4 Pro. Yet 99.9% of PSVR games work on PS5. What else did you want?

621d ago
CaptainHenry916622d ago

Another anti consumer move from Jim Ryan. No BC but he'll force his install base to buy the PSVR2 for $599

AshleeEmerson621d ago

You can already play Playstation VR games on the ps5. Let's not hold back the potential of psvr2 with backwards compatibility. It's not as simple as a switch, you guys know that is a completely different technology as far as tracking those. A lot of the game for created with the move in mind. Do you know how much work that would take? I'm happy there's no backwards compatibility but...

Although yes, I want my resident evil, firewall and astrobot upgraded, I'm more excited about what they are offering instead of complaining about what they're not. It's a foolish thing to do. We bought games for the PlayStation VR one, this is the place this is the PlayStation VR2 yet people want to scream anti consumer.

As my Spanish friends say estupendo 🙂.

Jk but yes, it's stupid. Just play it on PS VR1 and that's it or PS5 and which there are upgrades.

TheColbertinator622d ago

They might "remaster" all the PSVR games that were successful at 70 bucks a pop

ApocalypseShadow622d ago (Edited 622d ago )

Naysayers still trying their best. More Xbox fans doing their thing in the thread as usual.

PS VR 2 has proven it's a force of nature in VR. CNET and other websites have confirmed it. Games in VR will be different prices just like they are now.

How much are the VR prices on Xbox? Will the previous Xbox VR headset games be compatible with the series x version? Will they use Kinect 2 for tracking? Oh wait...

Bathyj622d ago

Well the only appeal of Xbox is the bargain bin rental service. It makes them mad PlayStation has games people are willing to buy.

When. They're willing to buy them twice it drives them absolutely nuts.

SullysCigar621d ago

I'm still looking forward to that "industry leading, high fidelity VR" Microsoft promised for Xbox One X in 2016. They wouldn't lie to get people to buy their products..... Would they?!

Sony NEEDS to bring that patented first party exclusive heat to gain a spot next to my wireless Oculus

Sorry but PSVR2 is dead and double dead at any sale price. It was dead before it launched as the "premium" VR scene lost all the AAA developers and now it is all indie mobile phone crap quality software.

State of Play | May 30, 2024

State of Play is back! Tune in live for updates on PS5 and PS VR2 titles, plus a look at PlayStation Studios games arriving later this year.

darthv721d 14h ago (Edited 1d 14h ago )

Im getting a bit of GotG vibes from Concord.

Ragnarok coming September 2024... that's just shy of 2 years since the PS5 release in November 2022.

-Foxtrot1d 14h ago (Edited 1d 13h ago )

I thought exactly the same. If they made it more like the GotG game and it wasn't online focused I'd have been sold instantly.

BISHOP-BRASIL1d 10h ago (Edited 1d 10h ago )

Yup, I was hyped up by the cinematic trailer and immediately put off the moment the gameplay trailer started, that was very high quality and great concept cinematic just for another Overwatch wannabe... Here's hoping they succeed so eventually someday they make an actual campaign focused entry for the franchise, but I'm not holding my breath and I'm definitely not falling for always online crap and FOMO just to follow drip fed cinematic "content".

EDIT: I'm still watching it as I comment... OMG they have another hero shooter, Marvel Rivals, seriously, they missed 2020 or something? For those not into online only and VR games, gotta say, poor show so far...

Profchaos1d 13h ago

Gotg would of been a hit if it released before Avengers was my goty a few years back so I'm intrigued here

RaidenBlack1d 13h ago (Edited 1d 13h ago )

GotG is very underrated and had the unfortunate luck of releasing just after Avengers.
Its really good and more people should play it.

Lightning771d 10h ago

Concord didn't do anything for me personally just another Overwatch mash up with other fps stuff. I mostly popped for Dynasty Warriors for next year. That was my biggest reveal I was genuinely excited for.

No Ghost 2. It's very clear Sony will wait later to Announce the Big Aaa's they don't wanna announce stuff too early and rather announce it closer to release.

darthv721d 13h ago

Maybe its just me but Astrobot looked more R&C inspired than ever.

P_Bomb1d 13h ago

Astro won the show. Looks epic! Huge bosses too like from the PSVR game.

shinoff21831d 13h ago

Astro bot and silent hill 2 remake are what I'm liking out of this.

RaidenBlack1d 13h ago (Edited 1d 13h ago )

Most games appeared good.
Where Winds Meet and Monster Hunter seemed like those needed a bit more polish but that's ok as those aren't releasing anytime soon but I am still kinda worried regarding SH2Remake. Still looks rough and from rear view, James Sunderland looks nearly identical to Leon Kennedy's model from RE4Remake. Hope I am wrong though.
Other games were decent. Even Marvel Rivals.
Ballad of Antara was the highlight for me, followed by Infinity Nikki(purely on the art style alone).
And glad that, Path of Exile 2 is coming to PS5 and Ragnarok is coming to PC!
Behemoth for VR2 also looked really interesting.

PapaBop1d 13h ago

You actually liked Infinity Nikki art style?

PSPSA1d 4h ago

Was my favorite looking game of the show, art style looks amazing

RaidenBlack1d 2h ago

Its not my type of game ...but the design and art style is really well thought out

Lightning771d 10h ago (Edited 1d 10h ago )

Marvel Rivals had a PC invite alpha test a few weeks back and they love the hell out it saying it's an Overwatch killer. I'm definitely down to play and play as my favorite.

STORM. ❄️💨🌊⚡

There's a closed beta in July on consoles but I doubt I'll be able to get in.

InUrFoxHole1d 7h ago

In overwatch 's defense didn't it kill itself?

Michiel19891d 3h ago

they also gave out beta keys where you had to sign an nda not to say anything negative about the game, otherwise you could not play. Don't support stuff like that :) surprised they even showed it here cause it looks terrible and it will fail faster than Artifact
