The disc and digital are exactly the same now. Only difference is the disc one comes with the drive and cover while the digital you have to buy the drive w/cover for another $80 if you want to make your own Disc 5.

What is curious is that they also made the base Digital version more expensive than it was previously. Now it's $450 vs $400 of the original digital one. Given that the Digital PS5 definitely has the potential to generate the most amount of revenue in the long run - they being the sole supplier of games for it - it's a rather odd decision.

I guess they felt that the price of the combo should be cheaper than buying the parts separately. if they stuck to the same price as now, the digital at $400 and the optical drive at $80 would have been $20 cheaper than the combo. only way to make the combo look more attractive is to raise the price of the digital.

The reason the originals had such a delta was because they both had their own board. So it cost more for the disc board than the digital board. The disc one has the firmware and controller onboard for the optical drive. The digital does not.

Now I understand that they simplified things and put the controller and firmware onto the external drive board. Which means they can churn out just one motherboard for both disc/digital units. It would be cool if this new external drive was also compatible with the existing digital units but we just have to wait for more info on that.

But that is kind of the point. For Sony, the combo should not be the priority, they get more money if you the user are only allowed to get your games by PSN. Therefore the Digital Slim should at the surface level be the better deal to entice users to buy it rather than the Disc version.

And what makes this even weirder is that they could very well had their cake and eaten it too. We have to remember that they are sunsetting the original model, so they were open to a bunch of different price strategies. Included but not limited to just offsetting the extra $50 to the Optical Drive itself.

The only reason that I can think of for them to go with this strategy is if the Digital version lost them too much money. But if that is the case, it's still super weird that they are doing that price increase with the Slim version that historically is cheaper to manufacturer and really the sole reason for Slim consoles to even exist in the first place.

That's the issue? That it's not more symmetrical? Ok. It's such a non-issue for its appearance. The real issue from a design perspective is the fact that the stands are different.

PS5 games with 10.28TF look equal or better than games running on a 12TF platform, so save it. GT7 is cross gen and STILL looks better than FM8 in many instances. I will also add that PS5 has VR, which, when combined with Pro hardware, pushes the experience that much further. I wouldn't need Pro hardware, but there is clearly meaningful application for it.

Remind me, didn't Xbox literally just get their first "AAA" game for this generation THIS YEAR? The best part, I can't think of a single first party game they launched this year that wasn't originally intended for PlayStation too, but Microsoft using their corporate imperialist powers purchased them. All games we know also had PlayStation versions in the works (HFR is not known definitively, but realistically, we know).

I get the sense that you're worried about a 5 Pro being more powerful than the Series X knowing there's (allegedly) no new X models coming.

With physical games being possible with this model, there is no guarantee it will make as much money on digital purchased like the previous digital did. They sold the ps5 for much lower than a disc drive would cost because they knew they made a lot more on digital purchases.

I too have a launch disc 5. I was using discs but recently the games i played had been added to PS+ extra. And if you already have the game installed (from disc), clicking on the PS+ version will enable it to run without the disc. kind of a neat little fix they did not too long ago.

Im curious about the SSD. Cerny said the reason they had to go with 825gb was due to their custom I/O. So hopefully they figured out how to increase it to 1tb otherwise i feel they removed the custom SSD and just stuck a regular M.2 drive in there. Which could make sense as now they wouldnt need to have that expense and SSD are getting faster / cheaper for off the shelf stuff.

Here's my issues with the new console
1) Less USB-A ports, meaning even more hassle if you are a PSVR (1) user since it use 2 USB A port, meaning that it's game over, if like me, you have an external HDD with your PS4 (PSVR game) installed unless you go buy USB-a to USB-C converter.

2) The beginning of an all digital future for the new hardware versions (both versions) are now Digitalconsoles with the more expensive as the External disk reader installed),

What are you talking about, this is the exact same USB amount, the only thing that changed is one swapped from A to C which is better for the future.

And you can still buy a disk for the same price as the old disk. It's unlikely they are going to eliminate the disk edition, if anything they are encouraging people to buy it. If they wanted to eliminate the disk they would have just done that.

And I am not sure why people are making such a big deal about price, PS5 has probably been the most discounted PlayStation ever, over the summer you could find PS5 for as much as $100 off at normal retailers, and most often you could find PS5's discounted by $50 and if you were shrewd you could even get a free game.

As I said on current PS5 console the OLD PSVR currently use 2 USB-A a ports leaving only 1 USB -A port for: Charging PS4 controller,moves controller, external HDD disk, etc.
to explain this my current setup for my PS5 is that I do have my PSVR stil plug on the console so it currently use the front port and back port (Camera must be plugged in the back), I also have a external 2 TB HDD with my PS4 games plugged on the other USB-A port (back). The front port USB-C port is used fro PSVR2 or controller charging
So If I remove one USB-A port to replace with a USB-C it means that I need to buy compatibility device or wire to make my external disk work or special wire for my PS Vr moves controller.

Why would Sony want to encourage you to buy the Disk version combo (it's now gonna be the digital version + external disk already connected) when they can reduce the production of it and force you to buy the 2 things seperately (and make more money at the same time) if you really want to still buy a disk version of the game?

Now here's the tricky part (bear with me I know it might be complicated) I need to plug my external HDD (that must be plugged into the console) into the now-removed USB-A port where do I plug it?

In regards to your second point. Let's be real the chances of a PS6 launching with an optical disc drive are fairly low. The optimistic view would be that Sony exploring an optional add-on now, could be a way to keep supporting it for a niche audience going forward without having to include it in every console.

Whether many publishers will see much value in continuing to support physical media is another matter. Not only is there very little R&D going on in that area so it's doubtful that a new viable format will emerge, but going through the hassle of producing and shipping physical goods, will become less attractive to publishers the smaller the share of physical sales is.

I believe people who care about ownership-rights will need to shift focus to decentralized DRM-free digital solutions that lets the end-user make local backups of digital purchases, but that's certainly not an easy goal to achieve in a walled-garden environment of consoles.

The only question I have is if the physical edition has a replaceable drive as well? If not, that puts the physical edition owners at a disadvantage if the drive ever dies out. There's no reason for it not to be replaceable at this point, but since it wasn't mentioned, we can assume its not.

Digital Edition + Drive is more expensive, but in the long run the better purchase.

I don't know which idiot downvoted you but I have the exact same reasoning and questions. I'm keen on the new console for the very fact that a drive can be swopped out in case it dies. If the disc version of the slim has this feature it would be a no-brainer to go with this. If not I will buy a DE and a drive, don't mind paying a bit extra than having to send in a whole console if the disc drive dies.

Bad news, just after they announced Slim model my used PS5 that I recently vacuumed out dust and sat for few days suddenly blew itself up after I plugged it in.
Didn't catched fire, power went out or anything like that it just making buzzing noise then three loud bangs few seconds after I plugged it in.
Let's just say I'm too scared to try turn it on now so now I guess I need a Slimmer PS5 now...RIP my beauty.

I think this looks worse personally and it also further confirms that for whatever reason, the PS2 still reigns supreme in Sony's offerings because it had the best slim model and every slim after it didn't look as good as that one. Especially considering the size of the original PS2 to the slim.

But that's also more of my personal opinion.

Im gonna comment half off topic. When im typing this, i wondering if you are still reading this, if you do, im thankful. What im about to say is mindblowing, revolutionary! Let me tell you now, this is my story… i dont really care about the new ps5 design, i got a original ps5 and im happy with that one. And i love nintendo, im excited about the new switch 2, a ps5 slim is waste of time… there you have it, its mindblowing! 🙃😧🤯
