Most Anticipated Game of 2024

VGChartz's Miles Gregory: "With amazing remakes of classic games, genre-defining titles, hotly anticipated sequels, and huge expansions to existing games, 2023 really spoiled gamers. Following up such a fantastic year would never be easy, and there are a lot of mysteries on the horizon. Will Nintendo release its follow up to the Switch? What are Sony’s studios working on? Will we begin to see the fruits of Microsoft's new acquisitions?

Though these burning questions are currently unanswered, we still have some fantastic games on the horizon to look forward to. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will continue the saga of Cloud Strife in Square Enix’s reimagining of what's considered to be one of the best RPGs ever made. The sequel to Capcom's cult classic Dragon's Dogma is on the horizon, as is Nintendo's remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, an entry that many consider to be the pinnacle of Mario RPGs. Fans of metroidvanias are eagerly anticipating the sequel to Hollow Knight in Hollow Knight: Silksong. Lastly, there's Senua's Saga: Hellblade II, the follow-up to Ninja Theory’s remarkable indie experience that was one-part graphical showpiece, two parts intimations of the effects of abuse and the complexity of mental health. There can be only one winner, though, so who will it be?"

FF7 Rebirth for me as well.

Sonic1881129d ago (Edited 129d ago )

I'm hearing that Hellblade 2 can be completed in 6-8 hours after being in development for 5 years. Perfect for gamepass

GotGame818129d ago

Where are you "hearing" that at exactly? Link please.

monkey602129d ago

Ninja Theory themselves said so in the Developer Direct. So dissapointing to hear too

"Although we are no longer an independent studio, our creative spirit has in fact been emboldened by our joining of Xbox Game Studios, and in this new chapter of Senua’s life we have been able to push our production values way beyond what we were able to achieve previously. So, my message to players is that if you loved Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, or if you enjoy narrative-led experiences of cinematic immersion, we are building Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II for you. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II will be a game crafted from the heart – a game similar in length to the first Hellblade, with a focused narrative, and sold digital-only at a price of $50 USD."

First Hellblade
Main story completion time, 7.5 hours

phoenixwing128d ago

I'm not buying the game or even own an xbox but it is cool that hellblade didn't pad out their game to make it seem like it was more than it is. However it is still disappointing but everyone has gamepass so i guess to those people it shouldn't matter right?

Lightning77128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

I see what you're saying but I'm disappointed in NT I'm my opinion. They had all this time to make at least a compelling 30 hour narrative focused game but they're still operating like they're independent. Maybe its a small dog Mentality but they had a chance to go big and didn't do it. HB2 is the very, definition of a one and done game. Beat it and move on, never to to back to it. That's all on NT and their small mind mentality. This was one of my most anticipated games but not anymore, In fact, I'm not even that excited for any of their future projects now tbh.

FinalFantasyFanatic128d ago

I dislike shorter games, especially at full price, but I abhor pointless padding, I'd rather a fun 10 hour game, than a 20 hour game with a 10 hour slog just to finish the main story.

The first Hellblade was about the same length, so I guess it's in line with expectations.

DarXyde128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

The game does appear to make a reasonable compromise being $50 (which is about a 29% discount from a full priced title). Moreover, the production value is very good and offers a similar experience to the first—I think that's a good thing if you loved the first. You might be wanting more, but at least it doesn't seem to be overstaying its welcome.

Overall, the pros and cons are there: lower price with a high production value and available at no cost beyond your Game Pass subscription, but digital only and pretty short (that's subjectively bad, though).

It is a bit jarring given the development cycle, but at the end of the day, it's a low risk pickup. If I liked Hellblade, I'd probably wait for a price drop, but only because it's digital and I tend to never spend above $20 on a digital game.

goldwyncq128d ago

Journey was a 2 hour game and it won GOTY in 2012.

monkey602128d ago

Journey was great too. And while I expect Hellblade 2 will be also... I didnt wait years in anticipation for Journey or expect it to build up on a previous entry. So yeah the HB2 length is a bit underwhelming

Tacoboto128d ago

Ninja Theory hasn't given any indication that this was going to be something radically different so that's kinda on you.

They've shown more of the same (for years now) but with significantly higher fidelity.

RaidenBlack128d ago

Order 1886, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, Titanfall 2, A Way Out, Stray, Ghostrunner etc .... all have 6-8 hrs campaign, but people have enjoyed and still enjoy these games .... branding a game as inferior after just knowing about its approx. length is not a good move, imho.
Let the game release.

Sonic1881128d ago

"branding a game as inferior after just knowing about its approx. length is not a good move, imho."

I never said the game was inferior. But I did think the first game was mediocre at best in my honest opinion.

Tacoboto128d ago

@Sonic

I'll take a guess you played it using speakers and not headphones? Such a disservice to the game *especially* if it wasn't surround sound.

Hellblade 1 with headphones, binging through it on a rainy day, is one of my top gaming moments. Even still through today, I haven't heard a game present itself the way that Senua's Sacrifice did, so incredibly and articulately.

monkey602128d ago

I've a similar take on Hellblade as Tacoboto. I played the first one with headphones and it blew me away. I was fully enamoured by it. I raved about it for years.

Sonic1881128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

@Taco

i found this game to be fantastic looking, and a great concept, but the actual gameplay and execution was very boring to me with no depth or variety in gameplay or weapons. The cutscene, walk through a corridor, puzzle room, fight some enemies, cutscene, puzzle room, fight some enemies, wash, rinse, repeat. Felt more like a slow walking simulator with a few action in it.

Tacoboto128d ago

@Sonic ok, so you played the game with low quality tv speakers, got it.

You played the game in the worst possible way.

FinalFantasyFanatic128d ago

@RaidenBlack,

I don't know if i'd lump Titanfall 2 into that list since it's primarily a online multi-player game with a really good single player campaign tacked on. Plus the multi-player received updates for a decent while after despite being dead on arrival. I'm still salty about how it was sent out to die like that.

Dude my reply was to Sonic1881's comment

coolbeans128d ago

Not the diss you think it is here. There's a lot of 1886 defenders here.

RaidenBlack128d ago

Order 1886, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, Titanfall 2, A Way Out, Stray, Ghostrunner etc ... all have 6-8 hrs campaign, but people have enjoyed and still enjoy these games .... branding a game as inferior after just knowing about its approx. length is not a good move, imho.

GamingSinceForever128d ago

I didn’t brand it as bad. I’m comparing it to another big budget single player game that’s short.

Wolfenstein Old Blood was a DLC, A Way Out was damn near an indie game and Titan Fall 2 was more multilayer focused. I don’t think they compare at all.

Tacoboto128d ago

Titanfall 2 is remembered today so fondly because of its single player campaign, regarded as one of the best FPS campaigns of all time.

The multiplayer was broken for a long time and it released to an empty playerbase because EA scheduled it to release between COD and BF.

darthv72128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

...aside from length, the price is nice at only $50. Perfect for those who aren't on gamepass.

monkey602128d ago

I'd actually argue a 7 hour game is not good value at $50. That's a big ask for a short burst. Hellblade one cost nowhere near that when it released at $30.

The3faces128d ago

Well I guess they could of added a bunch of boring fetch quest to extend the games length like Spiderman 2

Lightning77128d ago

You're hearing? It's been confirmed last week where have you been? Ninja Theory is known for 7 to 9 hour games if you look at their track record. Heavenly Sword, Enslaved, Hell Blade, DMC are 7 to 9 hours so it's the studios choice. It's not "Perfect for gamepass" or else ppl would be putting 200+ hours into something like a Starfield.

MrNinosan128d ago

I've played many games that can be completed in 6-8 hours, that I'd put to the pile of great games.
However, I wasn't a fan of the first game except the story, so doubt this will be on my top 5 list when the year is done.

However I'd be stupid to not play it as I can pick it up from the library and be done with it in one (long) evening.

Petebloodyonion128d ago

I don't recall ppl calling games like Until Dawn, Beyond 2 Souls, Detroit Become Human, Order 1866, etc. perfect for renting.
So how about we wait for the game and evaluate if the game's worthy of the asking price?
For your info, God of War 3 takes around 10 hours to complete the main storyline, Uncharted 2 around 11 and I don't recall ppl saying that they renting only material.

FlavorLav01128d ago

5 years to make an 8 hour game doesn’t sound great at all. This should have had a much more impressive scope than the 1st game considering the backing this time around.

Tacoboto128d ago

Spider-Man 2 was slightly shorter than Spider-Man PS4 despite costing $300m+.

A bigger budget doesn't imply a longer length and a similar length doesn't imply the scope hasn't gotten more impressive. What matters are the set pieces and what we've seen of Hellblade 2 so far exceeds the biggest set pieces of the first.

FF7Rebirth for me but there’s a bunch of other games I want to play. Granblue, Stellar Blade, and a bunch of other games that have a physical disc. It will be interesting to see if Alan Wake 2 gets a physical print this year.

anast128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

I agree, SH2 is actually the most anticipated game of this year.

Bloodlines 2 is my personal choice though.

RaidenBlack128d ago

Rooting for Bloodlines 2 as well ... hope it turns out great

monkey602128d ago

I'd be a lot more excited about it if Bloober weren't making it.

BehindTheRows128d ago

Yeah, I feel you there. Maybe they'll pull it off, but I am a little more reserved than I'd otherwise would be if not for that!

anast128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

For sure, I'm worried, but if I want to play a "VTM" game, I'll have to suffer some stupid sh$%. I know they are using 5e, but how much of it?

Yui_Suzumiya128d ago

Persona 3 Reload, Wraith: Aeon of Ruin, Selaco, Loopers Plus, Warhammer 40k: Space Marine II, Read Only Memories: Neurodiver, Konosuba: Love For these Clothes of Desire, Twisted Tower, Lunaria: Virtualized Moonchild, Clockwork Revolution, The Last Exterminator, Date A Live: Ren Dystopia, Silent Hill 2 Remake and Metaphor for me.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Gets DLSS Frame Generation: 77% FPS Gain with Broken Shadows

Dragon’s Dogma 2 has received a new title update that adds Frame Generation for NVIDIA RTX 40 series users (only). Unfortunately, the vast majority of gamers on RTX 30/RTX 20 and Radeon GPUs will have to keep waiting for an FSR 3 implementation of frame generation. There’s another tiny issue with the update.

Great remake... it had been so long since I played the GC original that I completely did not notice a difference in fps. This feels very natural as it is and looks great doing it.

shinoff21832d ago

I've actually never played a paper mario game. Idk how the hell that happened but I'm definitely getting this at some point. Looks fun.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Has Sold 3 Million Units In 2 Months

Dragon's Dogma 2, Capcom's latest JRPG, has reached a new sales milestone, rolling over 3 million copies in a span of two months.

isarai3d ago

Hands fown my game of the generation so far, definitely has some flaws and buggy quests, but damn is it good, and surprisingly flexible in how it allows creativity and different approaches to resolve quests and reacts accordingly.

banger883d ago

I just picked this up for PS5. I'm going to hold off playing as long as I can though, in case they decide to add a new performance mode. I don't want to play this at 30 fps unless I absolutely have no other choice (PC isn't a choice for me). I have a dozen other games in my backlog so I'm good.

VincentCastle2d ago

I have it on ps5 and pc and it plays as actually pretty well on PS5. The uncapped frame rates works best for the game then the newly added Max 30fps version.
The only town that gets the frame rates down between 25-35 ish is the first big city, but you won't be that much in it to be fair - I spent from 50 hours about 3 in the city and the rest exploring and the second main town which has better fps.

-on pc with my 3080 and 10700k CPU, the fps outside is better for sure as it can do stable 60fps... But it's the same or worst for the main city. I had fps between 20-50ish and the drops were really noticeable. But the same, most time was spent outside.

Nerdmaster3d ago

Really tried to like the first one, started it like 5 times, but it didn't click with me.
I'll try the sequel someday, but I'll wait for a good (like 50%) discount.

Cacabunga2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

It will end up on PS+ extra someday.
It is good devs release the game first and release it months later on PS+ to give it a second life.
If it was on sub service day one it would have sold 300.000 Max

ravens523d ago

Just curious, does this count as successful?

jznrpg2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

For a sequel to a niche game from the PS3 days I would think 3 million is very good. But I don’t know their sales expectations so I can’t say for sure.

EternalTitan2d ago

I . . .dont know.
AAA companies are weird. It depends on their fiscal stuff.
I would guess its successful because the first game sold way less in the same time frame.

EternalTitan2d ago

Knew the game had long legs. It had some disappointing issues like performance, dumb microtracsanctions at the beginning. There is a DLC coming. Wonder what that will add to the game.
