The Xbox-PlayStation Exclusive Merger: To Trade, Or Not To Trade

Jawad from eXputer says, "Xbox's decision to share its exclusive titles with PlayStation marks a major change in the gaming industry, in a good way."

Hofstaderman87d ago

No it isnt in a good way. Lets not pretend XBOX chose this please. Years of mismanagement led to this.

Petebloodyonion87d ago (Edited 87d ago )

So I guess Xbox's mismanagement led to PC gaming now having decent games since MS started to care about Windows and forced Sony to do so too.
Care to also elaborate on how gaming is worse now since PC gaming is again relevant?

Hofstaderman87d ago

We talking about XBOX here. The console not XBOX as a service. But very soon XBOX will likely only be a service in any case. Toodles, I'm off to play Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth now.

S2Killinit87d ago (Edited 87d ago )

Not sure why its relevant. PC technically does not compete with consoles. You dont really lose anything in terms of competition. But consoles not having any exclusives = no competition = less quality.

Ps: I wouldnt think xbox on PC has revolutionized PC. More like a drop in a bucket.

Pedantic9187d ago

Are you implying PC games weren't good until MS/XBOX started putting their games there ? Are we ignoring every game that was available on the PC before they started to give a sh** ?

blacktiger87d ago

Linux says HI enters by Valve and Steam Platform that doesn't depend on windows anymore.

rlow187d ago

@S2Killinit
“PC technically does not compete with consoles. You dont really lose anything in terms of competition.”

I disagree, Sony lost a value of 10 billion as a company because they forecasted 2 million less in sales of the PS5. My point, PC has an impact and people are buying. To say the market doesn’t compete is to ignore the blending of both markets. The fact that Sony put games on the pc started the shift. Now the first title from Sony to go day and date (helldivers2) has moved the needle even farther towards this blend. With a new ceo I feel more change is coming. The margins for tripple A games has thinned significantly and profits have to come from somewhere and I see a future where more day and date for the pc increasing.

Hopefully I’m wrong, but the firing of so many industry workers speaks volumes that times are changing.

Crows9087d ago

Im sorry...PC gaming has been relevant since before xbox was a brand.

87d ago
anast87d ago

No forcing there. Sony chose when and how in both PC and Xbox. It wasn't the other way around.

StoneTitan87d ago

pc gaming always had decent games, what are you talking about :D

Xbox is ahead of the game in this mark my words sony fowolling is proof this it makes sense for both parties oh and final fantasy rebirth is only a timed exclusive it's coming to pc

BehindTheRows87d ago (Edited 87d ago )

Sony isn't following anything. One puts there games on another platform from day 1. All of them. The other still has plenty of titles that have yet to come to PC.

Totally different strategies. Only one of them has worked. That's why Xbox games are coming to Nintendo and PlayStation platforms.

tehpees387d ago

BehindTheRows

I’ll say what I said before.

Microsoft made instant acknowledgement that their exclusives were cross gen at the start of Series life. Sony had cross gen PS5 games but tried to cover it up. They started releasing on PC because they saw Microsoft doing it. Then they released certain games day 1 in certain cases.

They are SAYING AND DOING the SAME THINGS as MS in every case. This won’t be the exception. If you think they aren’t watching how people react to buying their exclusives on PlayStation you’re mistaken. They are watching it as well because there is actually a possibility the world might accept playing competing exclusives while a hardware brand still exists. If you think they aren’t toying with the idea of releasing their games on Xbox that’s why you don’t work for Sony

ChasterMies86d ago

Mostly one year, 2013. Don’t know how Don Mattrick was employable after this.

Petebloodyonion87d ago

I fail to see why ppl are mad about this like they are losing something because other gets to enjoy the same game.
Like honestly do you go hate on Google because they are releasing their apps on iPhones?
Did Google Android OS become irrelevant?
And likewise with the iPhone?

It reminds me of when Playstation fanboys were against crossplay with other consoles because they believed that losers (owners of other brands) should just be forced to buy a PlayStation.
Yet tks to Crossplay some small games like Evil Dead, Texas Chainsaw, etc are still playable today.

GamerRN87d ago

You are comparing operating systems to consoles, and not many people buy a console because of it's operating system.

Petebloodyonion87d ago

So why do you pick an iPhone over an Android since there's no big exclusive?
Same thing here why would Playstation or Xbox collapse if you could play their games on other systems?
Last I checked a console was made to play games and a smartphone was made to use apps
And it's not like ppl who own a Xbox will suddenly have their friend on PSN and vice versa.

GamerRN87d ago (Edited 87d ago )

Because cellphones you buy based on the operating system. Consoles you buy for the games. No one cares that much about the console UI. We want a good interface, but that's it.

If cellphones were only about the apps, Apple wouldn't exist in the cellphone space anymore

Crows9087d ago

@pete

People that pick iphone over android are pretty ignorant...so yeah not a good comparison...unless you love being robbed.

outsider162487d ago

"It reminds me of when Playstation fanboys were against crossplay with other consoles because they believed that losers (owners of other brands) should just be forced to buy a PlayStation."
When did you start playing games?maybe research who refused first over crossplay. Ill give you a hint - when microsoft were leading.

Profchaos87d ago

there's a element of well why did I buy this because I could have brought the ps5 and played both

MIDGETonSTILTS1787d ago

If you remove the pressure from M$ to make cutting-edge AAA games by giving them Sony games instead, then you remove the pressure from Sony as well to make AAA games to stay competitive.

A lowered bar for M$ means a lowered bar for all console makers. I want Sony’s bar kept high so they don’t stop making $350 million games like Spider-Man 2.

Keep taking risks for the art form, you fat cats.

Asterphoenix87d ago

Well they are not getting the sales they want on Xbox and PC. So they have decided to port titles to other consoles there's nothing else to it.

Ironmike87d ago

U do realise that helldivers is selling more on pc I don't about other games sony will start releasing more games quicker to pc in fact they said that already what u all don't realise is its a bout money sony and xbox want max profits they don't care if they upset fan boys

gerbintosh87d ago (Edited 87d ago )

Max profits would be to release the $70 must have game on console for a period of time and then when that well has run dry, tap the PC market. Like Sony is doing right now.

Helldiver's 2, while a good game, is not a $70 ($40) must have game and Sony probably thought it was going to bomb which it did, on console.

P_Bomb87d ago

“Corny? I know.”

A bit, lol. Lots of kumbaya, but if you want Halo that bad in 2024, the old ways still apply. I don’t see Hellblade 2 dropping on PS this year either.

OzzY-waZZy86d ago

Literally no one wants Halo lol. Helldivers stole their lunch.

Sciurus_vulgaris87d ago

Microsoft making some, key word SOME of its games available on other platforms is being over blown. Then again, we live in an era we’re
journalists focuses on sensationalism and promoting drama, instead of analysis and professional reporting.

Sony shares big new PS Plus stat, but not the one we want to see

PlayStation Plus has improved the split of PS4 and PS5 players on its priciest tiers, but Sony continues to hide total subscriber numbers.

lol acting like it’s equivalent to ms numbers

Mr Logic19h ago

Uh...They're definitely not equivalent.

"Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass service now has 34 million subscribers."

"the total number of PS Plus subscribers across all tiers was 47.4 million"

darthv7218h ago(Edited 18h ago)

That PSN number seems like it should be much higher... especially when you consider that PS4 alone has a sell through of over 117m. To not even be at least half that is rather interesting.

To the XB side, having 34m to an install base of roughly 50m (XBO sell through) or even 85m (360 sell through) is a greater percentage of unit to member ratio than PSN.

bloop15h ago

That's not the "gotcha" you think it is Darth.

darthv7214h ago

^^it's not supposed to be bloop.... it's just an interesting observation.

Have you ever heard of a PC before? I hear they are pretty popular.

fr0sty6h ago

MS started lumping gold subscribers in with those GP numbers... keep in mind.

shinoff218317h ago(Edited 17h ago)

What. Definitely more os plus subscribers but that makes sense due to actual console sales

Darth the difference between the bases are huge your right but you gotta think. Ps players buy more games, where as the Xbox base relies on gamepass for their gaming. So it makes perfect sense

darthv7217h ago(Edited 17h ago)

What makes perfect sense though? You say PS players buy more games... so then logically there should be more PS+ subscribers given the increased number of online multiplayer games in the PS4 generation alone. The PS4 was the first time that + was required for online play much like Gold was for 360 users.

Keep in mind we are talking subscribers, not simply XB/PS users. I assume you meant to say offline single player games, which is most likely true as well. That gen also saw a significant increase in games with an online component comparted to the previous gen.

victorMaje17h ago

I for one will be going back to essential at the next renewal. When I feel a game is good & right up my alley, I’ll check trusted reviews & just buy it.

jznrpg15h ago(Edited 15h ago)

I have the top tier until 2028 as they gave me a massive discount for all the years I had left but I’ll most likely go to essential as well. I buy my games but my kids do use the service occasionally. They do prefer to own their games as well since any game can leave the rental service at some point and they don’t like that idea. They mostly use it to demo games then ask me to buy games if they really like it.

RedDevils11h ago

For me, I will cancel it all together but unfortunately I still have it till 2030 lol

meganick15h ago

I would like to see Sony add a fourth tier of PS Plus for people who just want to be able to play games online without any of the perks like monthly games, store discounts, or anything like that, and it should cost $20 annually, $30 maximum. There’s no way I’m paying $80 just to play games online. Even the original $60 fee was too much, and I would often wait for sales to re-up my subscription.

P_Bomb11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

Essential is too expensive, I agree. We’ve got one Essential and one Premium sub. Dropping the Premium when it expires.

gamerz8h ago

Just let my subscription lapse for the first time since 2010. Will sub again every now and then for a month or so to access my old ps+ games but for me it's the end of an era.

DivineHand1257h ago

Let those numbers continue to drop because it is now too expensive. $80 per year just to play online. I noticed they didn't offer any discounts on the subscription or controllers during this year's days of play for the first time in many years and they will feel it when people choose not to renew.

My subscription will lapse next month and it will stay that way until further notice.

KevtheDuff4h ago

There were savings on subs and controllers here in the UK? I bought a controller yesterday in the sale..
It would be weird if those deals were not in other territories too?

Hope SH2 gets more polish before release.

P_Bomb1d 13h ago

I’m not paying $94 CAD for what they’ve shown me. Looks rough as sin.

Fishy Fingers1d 13h ago

Ive seen better lip syncing during a Punch and Judy show

Sonic18811d 13h ago (Edited 1d 13h ago )

This looks terrible. Capcom should have done the remake 😂 The animations and gameplay looks stiff.

-Foxtrot1d 13h ago (Edited 1d 13h ago )

Okay. I was saying before in another article how SH2 looked better than the last trailer, which is true but damn this looks rough as hell.

I wanted RE4 / Dead Space remake quality

Sonic18811d 12h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

I wouldn't buy it for $70 dollars. Maybe when it's on sale.

-Foxtrot1d 12h ago

Yeah full price, deluxe editions, Konami are f***** tripping here.

CrimsonWing691d 12h ago

The characters look terrible to me… like it’s distracting.

Cheat providers for competitive games should be illegal.

Rynxie1d 12h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

This is what developers and manufacturers should do. I know going after cheat devices/makers is a cat and mouse game, and cost money. However, they can get that money back by sueing these manufacturers of cheat devices. Take a page from Nintendo's playbook.
