People using the video renting outfit Netflix are starting to complain that Blu-Ray disks are not as rugged as many people think. Punters have been reporting brand new Blu-Ray releases from Netflix have been arriving with a 1-3mm crack through the hardcoat part along the outer edge that makes the disc unplayable.

My personal experiences. I have atleast 20x more dvd's than bluray discs, so my info isn't accurate(i've had a handful of "bad" dvd's, and nothing yet with bluray). I'm sure as I get more bluray discs, I'll get more problems.

Blu-ray discs have a hard coating technology. This makes them sturdier than DVD's. TDK first came out with this technology, then other companies soon followed with their own.

So its not a problem with bluray discs, but just netflix, or the shipping company that they use. Also, Steve Swasey(VP of corporate communication for netflix) says "Our percentage of Blu-ray disks that members receive that are not playable is a fraction of a percent"

Another crappy article. So who's complaining about cracks. I've been renting blu-rays for years and they always arrive looking new. I have never seen a scratched BR. While DVD get scratched sitting in their cases.

i once rented sid meier's civilization revolution for the ps3 from blockbuster and it had a few scratches on it. granted it wasn't enough to make the disc unreadable but they were still there. id have to say its the way people treat the blu-ray discs.

i have around 20 blu-ray movies and about another 14 ps3 games none of which have a single scratch on them. it all depends if u care enough to protect your investment or not.

90% of my cd's and dvds have small cracks and are easily scratched...

my Resistance FoM bluray disc that i have had since december 2006 has absolutely not one scratch and i have used the crap out of that game.. many times left on the counter face down and brought in my ps3 case to many of my friends house..

NONE of my 45 blurays (games/movies) are scratched...

It takes a lot to scratch those things.. but i'm sure there's always the idiots who like to experiment to see how much it does take to scratch them.. specially if they don't own the disk.. such as renting them from netflix..

Bluray anti scratch technology is the best one i've ever seen.. so just because people can't get over the fact that bluray is won and it's a great format.. there's no need to keep these non-sense articles...

I'm sure that some Blu-rays will crack, especially being sent through the mail in a cardboard sleeve. Lots of ppl don't take care of their own personal property, let alone the property of others.

I don't think this is some big "issue" all of a sudden.

At the end of the day, I'd much rather have a Blu-Ray disk as opposed to a DVD, not only because of the durability of them, but because it's such a better format, imo.

Also I bet it is microsoft hiring people to hijack netflix vans and tap the outer coating of blu ray discs with tiny hammers to give the mannoying crack which stops them from working even though the crack is tiny, just to annoy everyone.

First, there has been no announcements from Netflix about any such issues.

Second, people totally abuse the discs they get from Netflix, whether it is DVDs or Blu-rays (rental stuff always gets more abuse b/c people have no incentive to treat them with even the slightest care), so who knows what people are doing with the discs.

Third, we have heard no other complaints from any other rental places, including Blockbuster.

Fourth, there have been no problems reported with rented or used PS3 games, both of which use blu-ray media.

Fifth, This title is total nonsense... "Blu-ray Proving Easy to Damage"... where is there any proof of this, even if there are some isolated incidents (none of which have yet been substantiated). How do some possible isolated incidents lead to a title about them being easy to damage???

And finally, Blu-rays are LESS susceptible to breaking... THEY ARE NOT INDESTRUCTIBLE!

Blame the customers too. If your player is moved while a disk is spinning at high speeds in some types of players the disc can fall off the spinner.when this happens it slams against the sides of the tray wall at high speed causing a "CRACK" on the edge.

I've had this happen to me while recording media with a player. I highly doubt any disc media can survive this destructive force. In essence the crack is caused by something hitting the edge of the disc and separating the layers.

It could also be some players don't slow the disc enough before releasing it from the spindle causing it to hit the edge of their trays when ejecting the disc. The customer wouldn't always notice this because they're normally finished watching the movies. It might also be a tiny crack that grows as the disc flexes in shipping.

There is also disc rot. Oddly this is one of the weak points of disc media that's existed since the first laser media. Eventually, most media starts to separate as it ages causing the layers to unattached.

a bunch of blog posts isn't exactly what I'd call proof that this is a major issue especially when there's nothing besides a couple people complaining on the internet. Personally I haven't gotten one unplayable bluray from Netflix yet. I get everything on blu unless it's not available and I go through 12-20 discs a month. With Netflix, like others said, you will end up getting a damaged disc from time to time. Blu rays are not indestructible, but they are definitely durable and more scratch resistant than DVDs.

In my opinion the blu-ray coating is one of the best features of blu-ray. I never have to fear that the disc will get scratched, because the darn thing is so though. I even tried to scratch my own disc with a key and well it didn't!!!

Now what this article is saying is that blu-ray disc are more likely to crack, which isn't impossible and has less to do with the coating. Perhaps the disc is much less malleable and therefore cracks more easily than DVD.

Because the article doesn't have a source doesn't mean it doesn't happen, likewise a source doesn't mean it does happen either. People misrepresent information all the time.

Well things are always susceptible to damage especially when being provided through a carrier, working in retail has taught me that. As no matter how much time you may invest in packaging some things their will always be a chance for it to break.

I don't know could this be due to something the manufactures or shippers are doing themselves? So far I haven't had anything happen to my blu ray discs (especially warhawk) which I've had for over a year. So I have no clue as to this one. Though thinking maybe a wearhouse problem.

I was using my PS3 NFS pro street for a blu-ray stress test and found it difficult (in comparison to a DVD) to get it to stop working. Even if they are breaking it's most likely they have been intentionally damaged. From my experience a Blu-ray disk is incredibly unlikely to be damaged during normal use.

Again I think the key part of this here is "Netflix". They put their discs in a cardboard sleeve and send them via regular postal mail no special handling...so i am sure these discs go under a ton more stress than your normal user. Plus...as reported...the older the disc the more prone it appears.

@Syronicus - umm...finding threads like this was really easy. I just did a google search for forum threads on Netflix blu ray problems. Found a bunch of them. I think this is a legit issue for Netflix users.

Really I think this just comes down to properly protecting the disc. Netflix's cardboard sleeve isn't enough. Remember these disc get shuttled through the postal services machines which i am sure bend the discs a tad, etc.

So how is this an issue. Seems like the issue is with Netflixx sending the discs (both dvds and Blurays) in justan envelope, with isn't ideal for any type of media.

BTW you can google anything and you will find some threads on it, but that doesn't mean it is prevalent.

I have all together liek 90 bluray games and movies and hundreds of dvd movies and games (ps2) and trust me when I say pretty much all the dvds are somewhat scratched and non of the blurays are. But mailing any disc in an envelope and putting it throught the postal it's bound to happen, not to mention when people "rent" something they typically are very carefull with it.

A thicker coating means the Blu disc can't bend as much, but the pros well outweigh the cons. No scratching is definitely worth the very small amount of poorly handled discs getting damaged by the postal service (probably machine sorted, those things aren't exactly the gentlest things).

Netflix is just taking the cheapest way to ship the disks and it's showing through wear and tear. They probably save more by shipping in a cardboard sleeve and replacing any defective disks than by shipping it in a safer "container".

-Natal getting loads of hype for no good readon
-People ignoring the flaws in Natal such as the glitches and innaccuracy
-People claiming a game is exclusive despite it being on the PC any game that doesn't require a specific thing to play is not exclusive so Gears of War isn't, nor Alan Wake
-Giving games HYPE! Forza 3 is so much hype and inferior in quite a few ways for example GTPSP has more cars, mod nation racers has more customizability.
-Charging for online, yes we know XBOX live is so much better, but in what way? As side from voice chat you are paying for adverts(I own an xbox and they are everywhere), your paying for P2P which cost nothing while a FREE service get's dedicated servers and finally you are paying for MS bandwidth so they can bribe developers and make big deals out of exclusivity of DLC
-Ruining competitors reputation for example the 10 minute install on GTA IV was a big thing according to Microsoft despite now offering installs AND downloadable games.
-Doing what they attacked the competition for, I mean first they had a go at sony for lack of games(at launch) and gimmicky controlls and then they haven't released many AAA games this year while the PS3 has 3 inFAMOUS(in my book), Killzone 2 (in my book and reviewer) MLB 09(reviewers). I too question the validity of the article. I have yet to receive a bad BD from Blockbuster (no $1 fee added either) and I have rented BD 's like mad over the last couple of years. However, I have received a few badly scratched or cracked DVD's during the same time frame...Does that mean we have a problem with DVD's too?

Ive got over 35 Blu-ray games and movies and not one has a crack or scratch. Maybe Netflix should go the way of GameFly and put a cardboard protector in it so they dont get broken in the mail. Cause I guarantee the disks arent just breaking like the blog is trying to say.

I've rented over 250 DVD movies from Netflix and have found that less than 10 have been cracked/scratched and unplayable. I've rented less than 20 Blu-ray movies and found that 4 were damaged and unplayable. I would have to say at this point that there seems to be some validity to the claim. I've read other articles that support this theory. I don't believe that Blu-ray discs are more suseptible to damage than DVDs but they don't seem to "travel" well.

It's on what exactly is the BLAME. EVERYONE (besides FUD, I guess) thinks that Netflix and rental services like them (I subscribe to Gamefly and I've yet to have an issue with them about this) needs to modify how they ship discs to you, and it's not necessarily a problem with the actual BD tech.

I know leaving cds in a hot car can mess them up quick, probably the same for netflix shipping.

then im one lucky son of a gun, i bought most of my games used and the PS3 games are flawless, no scratch at all. When i rent at the local video store i get Blu Ray movies and games in perfect condition. This article fails so bad, using netflix as the ultimate variable since the inventory of Netflix gets the most abuse. Mail travel, careless users, etc. Blu Ray has been around for more than 3 years, and the general consensus is that is more reliable than DVD by a large margin.
Im thankful of the Blu Ray format, now my PS3 can do justice to my 46" Sammy playing the Dark Knight in great HD

I can guarantee that what people do with DVDs and BDs that they get from Netflix is far from the norm. I mean, I'm not extremely careful with my DVD collection or games, but I've never had the issues that I've had with a ton of the movies I've gotten from Netflix.

the same old tired measures. First it's sony won't replace my dusty ps3. Then it's RROD is overated I'll make up YLOD and say, "OMG all the 60GB PS3's are dying". I have been using netflix for almost 4 years and I use to get dvd's broken in half. Its the risk you take because they come in a paper sleeve and its returned into the mailbox along with 5 pound mail.

Netflix doesnt even get mad either. they just ask that you return the broken dvd pieces and they will mail you another movie asap.

Im pretty sure the author is a extreme xbutt who rented a few blurays and used a hammer and a nail and dumped the bluray back into the mailbox. If more xbutts do this to get thier story printed they think netflix will stop sending blurays by mail?

I thought all the hd-dvd supporters buried thier heads in the sand as this idea of ruining blurays to proove some kind of point is too little too late. this could be a perfect world for you but then you wouldnt be living on EARTH.

lol I have close to 50 Blu-Rays now, and every single one works. Well, I guess I haven't watched three or four of 'em, but, regardless, that is at least 46 out of 50, without a single scratch. Plays perfectly. The worst problem I've ever encountered with Blu-Ray is cracked cases at Best Buy. Then I just go and replace them. Now that I think about it, I do have one PS3 game that is pretty scratched: Resistance: Fall of Man (forgot PS3 games are Blu-Ray too). My brother was careless with the disc. Needless to say, I was very angry when I found out.

These babies are just too hard to scratch. You have to go out of your way or be a complete d*ck in order to ruin the disc. The funny thing is, even though the disc looked pretty crappy, it still played perfectly. That's why I've always liked Blu-Ray. Even if you can't fill the disc to full capacity, you can duplicate data and make it easier for the disc player to read the CD with tons of scratches already on it: more chances.

Of course, not everyone is able to do this, and there will always be that odd one, but it's so small it's not even worth mentioning.

But it was the fault of the identifier stickers that they started using around the center; throws the spinning of the disc off. Only happened twice (The Mummy 3 and Destroy Before Reading) and the discs were spotless BTW .

Never had a cracked Blu-Ray yet after many dozens of shipments.

I own over 30 ps3 games and not one is scratched. Along with my 20 blu ray movies. I buy blu ray movies previously viewed from my work all the time and they are NEVER scratched. This article is BS.

Example: I work at a rental store, and people come in all the time complaining about a dvd being too scratched. Never once, has anyone come in to complain about a blu ray(unless they come in saying it doesn't work in their "dvd" player... idiots).

BRD from Netflix has been far more reliable than DVD. Partly because they are typically newer and people with a bit more money have BRD and tend to be more responsible about that sort of thing. However, the couple of BRDs that I have received that were scratched up played without a hitch.

I have issues with DVDs about 1 in 30 and have had no issues with BRD. This report is likely fake.

I'd say about a little more than have of my BR show up like this, good thing is that netflix sends a replacement disc withing a few days. But sometimes those are broke too! It is very frustrating. small crack on disk wont play in either the ps3 or the samsung BR player. They just need to package the disk's like gamefly. surround the disk in cardboard.

I rent movies from netflix alot and out of all the blurays 1/2 or more have a crack on the outside near the edge, but none of my own blu rays have ever had a problem. I actually had to go online and change my preference to dvd only because I was tired of renting blu rays and not being able to watch them.

I don't think examples from Netflix proves anything about blu-ray's durability. It is sad that people are able to come to a conclusion with such little thought process.

Surviving Netflix calls for something beyond any physical media could offer. If anything, blu-ray fairs the best.

So I can see what scratches and what breaks. We have NEVER had ANY defective PS3 games or Blu-ray DVDs. It may seem impossible, but seriously, we've NEVER had a defective one. The only time when Blu-ray movies are brought back to the store is because the customer that rented it DOESNT HAVE a Blu-ray Player. XD
We have to defect about 10 Xbox360 games weekly, and it pisses me off, because we lose so much money buying Xbox360 games for rental, but after TWO rents its damaged and useless. We've had our copy of Lair since it came out. No problems. Funny thing is, we dont have many Wii games that are defective, but 360 and Wii use the same format. What are 360 users DOING to our discs? And dont say its KIDS, because thats all who rents the Wii games, but I'm dont ever recall getting a defective Wii game except for maybe a few times.

I own a video game rental store and have been operating for 6 months.

In that time I have not had complaints/problems or scratches showing up on PS3 games.

Unfortunately I have had about 20 games come back that are unusable, 95% are XBOX 360 games and the other 5% are PS2 games. There are also plenty of 360 & PS2 that are scrathed but still work - but for how much longer?

I can't wait until everything is played via Blu-ray because then I don't have to replace those games.

And while I have had this happen, it's only happened a couple times. Once Netflix screwed up and accidentally sent me the same DVD twice in a row that was cracked. The damaged DVD's that I had received all had a small 1/8th inch crack right on the outside of the disc underneath the hardcoat. I could tell because around the crack there was a halo effect, like if you were to push down on film and leave an indent.

I think that this article is rather sensationalized, however. That isn't surprising though, because that's really all the media can throw at anything PS3 related this generation. Extremely sensationalized "news" stories and FUD.

To me, this report is very accurate. If I drop a DVD, there is an incredibly small chance that a crack will appear on the disc to render it unplayable. In fact, I have dropped a ton of DVD's over the years and nothing that would stop me from playing that disc again ever happened. However, when I dropped Little Big Planet right after finishing the game, a crack appeared in the middle of the disc and made it unplayable. My friend dropped his NHL 09 disc, also for the PS3 and it became unplayable as well. We were both shocked at how fragile the discs are, especially since we both saw the additional coating on the disc as a selling point for the system.

Well i use Lovefilm (british version of netflix) and get blu-ray all the time as well as games and all disks are always fine.
