Engadget: Samsung's 14-inch transparent OLED laptop (video) hands on

Engadget writes: "If you thought the XPERIA Pureness was wild with its meager 1.8-inch transparent screen, wait'll you get a hold of Samsung Mobile Display's prototype 14-inch notebook -- complete with what's being touted as the world's first and largest transparent OLED prototype. When the thing is off, the panel is up to 40 percent transparent (as opposed to the industry average of below twenty-five percent)."

that looks sweeeettt n pricy....I wish they had a transparent keyboard too but I know thats not possible considering the motherboard , HDD n stuff is inside.

ChozenWoan5259d ago (Edited 5259d ago )

True, but could you image every surface of your house being able to display video and be used as an interface. I'm thinking mostly of Stark's house in Ironman.

Can't wait to see it displaying a 3D image... now that would be trippy. =)

Raf1k15259d ago (Edited 5259d ago )

This does look cool but how practical is it?
Unless it's able to display a proper white colour every colour you look at will be tainted by the colour of the objects behind the screen. A game like Mirror's Edge or Portal just wouldn't look the same.

edit: 2.2 has the right idea. There's a place for this kind of tech. I just don't think laptops is that place.

:( but i'm broke goddamn college :(

beardpapa5258d ago (Edited 5258d ago )

I guess you can't watch pr0n in a college library w/o other people watching along, or I guess you can no longer chat w/ someone "privately"

I'm thinking they should pack two transparent OLED screens. The outer screen w/ the lid open will display whatever color or opacity, while the inner screen displays the image. That way, people can actually work with the thing and get some privacy.

On the flip side, add a touch sensitive layer to the outer screen, so when the lid is closed, the outer screen can display the image with the inner screen being the background, hence it could be used as a tablet.

Of course, expect this kind of computer to be rendered useless since I expect the "lid" to crack, break, scratch easily. Yikes! Paperweight.

ShinRyuHadoken5258d ago

Agree with you Raf1k1. Its not practical. You can not properly read cause the transparant screen.

Lets-Game5259d ago

impressive tech but totally pointless and unpractical.

reaferfore205259d ago

Impractical for a computer. But window ads for businesses could benefit from a screen that can be seen from both sides.

The Meerkat5259d ago

Or a heads up display inside your glasses.

Or car windscreens

Andronix5259d ago

See-through screens can be used as a heads-up display in car, planes, trains whatever. All the info you need, speed, fuel etc, without having to look down. A great idea. But one other use is pretending you are working on your laptop whilst secretly spying some hottie through the screen. I'm not saying that I'd do it, but someone will...

quadalupeupe5259d ago

very cool tho

it reminds me of stuff i see in movies where they have those see-through glass screens they move around

jerethdagryphon5259d ago

military aplications you can put the hud right onto the canopy less looking around hell you could putt cameras in the rear and display on side

Azurite5259d ago

Looking forward to stuff like this in the car, bus, train, taxi (list goes on).

It can be used for lighting up the streets and show commercials at same time.

Shops could have their windows show mannequins that change clothes regularly.

Many possibilities with OLED-tech and its future offsprings.
What's shown today is just a glimpse.

smartmart5259d ago

this kind of device will be seen more often considering the global trend toward augmented reality. nice!

ULTIMATE_REVENGE5259d ago

You could technology like this in so many ways. I've always wondered that in order to achieve the a transparent display the pixel would have to be transparent and therefore not being able to give out colour but it looks like Samsung have some how manage to produce both transparent pixels that also display colour images.

Next thing you know we'll have 3D Ultra HD thin transparent TV's lol.

Loool, Angela looks like Brian "Q" Quinn from Impractical Jokers! 😂

The rest of them don't look so bad in desig , it just feels like overall the graphics could have been better for 2024. I'm not blown away, but it's alright.

BigBosss1h ago

Could have been worse right? OG Maria looks like Cameron Diaz lol

OtterX1h ago

Days Gone Director Says Bend's Project Costs Over $250M; Says PS Co-CEO Doesn't Want 2 Zombies Games

Days Gone director claims Sony has already poured in at least a $250M in Bend's project; says Days Gone sold more than Death Stranding.

shinoff218317h ago

Well that sucks. Seems they want more online trash. I'd rather of had the sequel if it was single player

MrNinosan2h ago

What online trash games did PS Studios release last 10 years?

Notellin54m ago

The past has nothing to do with the future. This is such a terrible argument. Everyone knows about their current live service push.

-Foxtrot17h ago

It would be a shame if it was true that Hermen never gave the franchise a chance simply because he didn't like it and they already had a "Zombie" game with TLOU.

NaughtyDog are most likely moving onto a new IP next so it would have been the perfect time to do it.

ThinkThink9h ago

Here's where xbox steps in and releases state of decay 3 day and date on ps5.

Grilla2h ago

Days gone 2 was canceled before Herman was in charge. That happened like 4 years ago.

vfl5231h ago

4 years ago he was head of Playstation Studios. He would've probably had a hand in the cancelation.

Notellin52m ago

Man two seconds of research could have saved you from this comment. Amazing work Grilla you fit in with the uniformed N4G community who speaks before verifying anything that they say.

excaliburps3h ago

Yep. Kind of weird since it wasn't a sales flop, no?

I know we have to take what Ross says with a grain of salt since we're hearing just one side of the story, but even so, the game wasn't bad at all. Heck, it's my brother's favorite last-gen game from what I recall.

The amount of zombies on screen, imagine that with the PS5 and SSD? That would be insanely fun!

Grilla2h ago

Most copies were sold on sale. Not enough ppl bought it at full price. I paid 20$ for it 6 -7 months after release.

Notellin51m ago(Edited 50m ago)

Yeah we should never believe the creators side until we hear the corporate/big business side as history has shown we should always believe billion dollar corporations.

What a bootlicker statement.

P_Bomb3h ago

Well I don’t want 10 live service games, but they have no problem doing that lol. Ugh.

CrimsonWing692h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Oh great so we only get what the big wigs want… y’know, the people that really have their fingers on the pulse of what their consumers want. Faaaaantastic!
