Here's your LATEST Wii successor rumor

Raw Meat Cowboy: My inbox has been flooded with this rumor, so I'll post it up for you guys to check out. This blurb supposedly comes from NGamer issue 61, page 7. I do not have the issue to vouch for this blurb.

"At GDC, we heard reference to Nintendo's "Project Butterfly", the intended succesor to the Wii. No specs were given, though the hardware is designed to be physically upgraded over time. As it was explained to us, by plugging in new parts....................

sounds like the genesis/cd/32x era all over again.

The current wii is so capped that it could be uncapped and almost be considered a new machine. The gpu/cpu are capable of hd graphics. I'd like to see nintendo update the system to support expandable memory similar to how you can allocate memory in windows.

Using an SDHC card, you set aside x amount of megabytes or gigabytes for use as system memory. It can be done but the question is......will it.

A very very bad idea if Nintendo do this by allowing upgrades over time.

Parent walks into shop buys a Wii 2, a few months later buys a game and it wont work...Why? Because now your Wii 2 requires additional parts in order for the game to work.

Very very bad move...Lets hope it doesn't happen.

I see your point and its a good one. To me for it to work, would have to be just an add on that improves the game graphically, so the games would still play the same, but if you have the add on, it would just look better, just like when you upgrade the video card in the computer.

better then to make a device that you put on your PC and acts like the middleware for playing games based on nintendo hardware....

consoles only have two advantages, games designed to use the controls of the system, and that you will not need to buy anything else (almost anything) to play games on it...

it would be shot in the foot for console gaming...

seems very Nintendo. i like it allot. concept seems like the expansion slot on the 64.

ideas pop into my head now. a nice powerful "revolution box" upgrade it with some Nintendo video card over the years. sounds fun. seems like everyone in the industry will copy.

I dont think that a console that can be upgraded over time is a good idea. We had consoles in the past with upgradable parts and in the end it just leads to confusion among consumer.

What i dont understand is why when the sales start to dip for the Wii people expect Nintendo to release a new console. It just seems a bit strange to me thats all.

If they do release a new console i can imagine that it is to play catch up with the tech inside the 360 and PS3.

a new console today would surly surpass ps3.
also its possible to pull it off the upgrade cosole with charts. you can even get the high medium low factors.
ex based on the users system defines how the game will look.

But the problem with Nintendo is that they never invest a lot of money into developing tech for their consoles. What Nintendo usually does is produce a console cheaply then make a big profit off each unit sold. Which is proven by this article.

So i expect the Wii2 to be similar in power to the 360 or the PS3 and will probably release at a price of 250€. Now i believe this to happen if Nintendo announces a new Wii at E3.

if you look at a vast majority of all Nintendo products they add special slots and ports for expandability. in case they ever wanted to try something new

Imagine a basic version, that ran games at 720, 30fps.
Another version that basically ran that same game at 1080p 60fps.
All graphical settings the same, except higher resolution and frame rate. That way the games would be easy to program, but you could have a more expensive console for those who wanted some better visuals.

Think about what you said, for it to work should just be a graphical upgrade? Then you cannot agree with what I said, how many folks that buy the Wii say the much older gamers or the young kids for whom parents purchase it for they might not know. And again what if the graphical upgrade is completely out of price range for many that simply cannot afford it?
You cannot then say you will have happy gamers no chance, you buy a console you expect it to work with all games that come out for it.

That would make sense, given the codename of the product (Butterfly)... A caterpillar changes into a chrysalis and emerges a butterfly. It's a continuous amelioration.

It will be a beast amazing idea its to stop people having to buy a new console every 5 years in other words every 4 years u can upgrade 4 a £100 ect instead of £400 on a new console its revolutionary and makes ur Wii2 the last console u will need and i think it will be called WiiRS for Wii Revolutionary System as the Wii was going to be called RS so maybe WiiRS/Nintendo RS

Its a good idea. The N64 had expandable memory & it worked by allowing extra features & a graphical upgrade to expansion owners but wasn't compulsory to play the game.

it would make the console future proof.

but it basically make it a pc. consoles are deliberate separate from pcs in their accessibility.

all this bullshit makes consoles a headache
